A depressing statistic

Wolves' latest defeat, at the hands of Liverpool, was the 20th consecutive game in which the team failed to keep a clean sheet. Frankly, that's pathetic.

The Reds are flying high at the moment so in theory I can forgive shipping a few against them. What angers me is that we made it easy for them with the type of fundamental mistakes that have cost us dearly in a fair few of the other 19.

It seems like there are no lessons being learned and I see no indication that the next fixture will be any different.

Reality bites

Mick McCarthy is always good for a quote and after the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Villa, he came up with a nice little soundbite. "A penalty, a sending off, someone carried off," he said. "I don't know where Lady Luck was today but she wasn't in a gold shirt that's for sure."

As well as it summed up his disappointment in his side get nothing from a largely excellent display though, it wasn’t accurate and it masked the reality of what went wrong at Molineux.

You’ve been Frimponged

Don’t tell Arsene Wenger, but we’ve just found the player that he has needed ever since Patrick Viera left his side.
How many times since the big Frenchman departed have you heard a pundit say that Arsenal is a great team but they lack a bit of bite in the centre of the park?
If only the Gunners had a player like Frimpong – mobile, good on the ball, strong, fearless.
Oh wait a minute, they do . . . and it’s him.

How are we not bottom?

Forget the immaculate conception, the miracle us Wolves fans should be thankful for this Christmas is that our team is not rock bottom of the Premier League.
The abysmal form of Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan is masking the fact that we’re in a deep rut.
In our last 14 games we have conceded two goals or more in 12 of them – that’s just atrocious.
Whatever you have asked Santa for, write to him again and ask for a defence instead.

Keep ball?

Well, we got beat soundly at the weekend but I don’t think we should be reading too much in to that. Chelsea haven’t been at their best in recent weeks but they are still Chelsea. Instead I want to look at what I think is a new thing at Wolves – possession football.

Stay upright in the fight

A few pundits have been analysing an incident in our much-needed victory over Wigan at the weekend. Stephen Hunt went through on the keeper, nudged the ball past him and contact was made forcing him off balance. The Wolves man didn’t hit the ground though, he stayed on his feet and tried to play the ball back to a teammate. Wigan defended it and the chance was lost.

Not for the first time when a Wolves player has had the chance to go down and stayed upright and the question dividing both fans and professionals in the game is: should he have hit the deck?

Grow up and pipe down

Once again this week, I've been avoiding any football conversations with people who don't already know which team I support. And the reason isn't because I'm ashamed of the team despite another poor performance. It's because I'm ashamed of the fans.

Keep Karl and carry on . . . losing

It was sad that the biggest cheer at Molineux on Saturday came when the stadium announcer announced that Karl Henry was being withdrawn. I'm totally against supporters making examples of specific players on their own team when they show their discontent.

Karl had a bad game, awful in fact, and it was the right decision to haul him off. But to give ironic cheers when his number is put up is counterproductive. If his confidence is battered how will he improve?

All that said, I think he should be dropped for a run of poor performances.

Talking tactics

It seemed like two Wolves teams turned up to play Liverpool.
The first team took the opening 45 minutes at Anfield and were outplayed.
A second team came out after the break and had the beating of the Reds.
The difference wasn't in the personnel though, it was in the formation.

Mixed emotions on Wolves omissions

It's hard to know whether to welcome or worry about the latest England squad selection. Matt Jarvis isn't in it and I think he should be. Johnson too would have a shout if Fabio picked his players based on form and not who they play for.

It seems unfair to our players and may have an impact on our attractiveness as a club in the future. On the other hand, the Wolves fan in me shouts louder than the England fan.

Squad in shape

It might be the high of three wins out of three. Or perhaps it’s the warm feeling that you get from outpassing and outclassing a team that accused you of dirty tactics last season. Whatever it is, it has got me thinking about the Wolves squad and just how flippin’ brilliant it is.

And we're off . . .

So the new season is under way and the 2-1 win at Blackburn was the best possible start. The victory was especially significant because of the way it came about - away from home, against a lower/middle-order club and after going a goal behind. It's early days of course but with this success Wolves showed the qualities that are essential in becoming an established Premier League outfit.

Now that the dust has settled, I’ve taken a bit of time to stand back and assess the state of our club. The only conclusion I can draw is that for most of us fans, we’ve never had it so good.

Only if you have been supporting Wolves since the 1950s can you have experienced a more exciting time in the club’s history.

I’m still shaking

The season is over and after a roller-coaster of a final day of a topsy-turvy year, Wolves are safe. My nervous are shot though after the most excruciating and exhilarating final day of a Premier League season in its history.

Five teams were battling for survival on the final day and four of them spent time in the relegation zone during the 90 minutes.

For months, every time Wolves won or lost and Mick McCarthy was asked about the league position, he responded the same way. “May 22nd,” was his stock answer and come the final whistle on that date, his side had secured survival.
