Who saw that coming?

Not me. Stole Solbakken’s appointment came straight out of leftfield and nobody expected it.
Top marks, Morgan and Moxey, for springing the unexpected.
They even threw us all of the scent with all that talk of waiting until the playoffs were done and dusted before formally seeking a new manager.
Most of us were expecting Chris Hughton or Ian Holloway to be approached but then bam! A 44-year-old Norweigan with a pacemaker arrives and the deal is sealed.

Self destruct

If you're reading this then I can only assume you have stumbled upon ESPNsoccernet's Wolves blog while trying to find some site dedicated to masochism. Perhaps you put some words like shame, despair and humiliation in to Google and it got you here. There is plenty of that on this site but it's probably not the kind you're looking for.

I can't imagine it's likely, but I guess you may actually be a supporter of Wolverhampton Wanderers and are here for some insight and opinion on the club's current situation. I'll have a go for your sake but you really should ask yourself what kind of person you are if you want to think about what's going on at Molineux at the moment.

Read a book, paint a picture, ask a girl out, take a walk – try any of these things and make yourself happy. Football just isn't going to do it for the next few months so my advice is to try to develop some other interests and forget about the ridiculous game for a while.

Wolves dealt double injury blow

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been dealt a double blow with the news that Jamie O'Hara and Jody Craddock are facing further spells on the sidelines.

The pair have both undergone surgery, with O'Hara receiving treatment on a groin injury and Craddock going under the knife due to a hamstring problem.

Craddock has been absent since December while O'Hara has been struggling for fitness of late, and news of their extended absence is yet further frustration for boss Terry Connor, whose side are bottom of the Premier League.

"Both Jamie and Jody have undergone successful operations," head of Wolves' medical department Steve Kemp told the club's official website.

"Jamie has been struggling with a groin problem for several months and every attempt had been made to maintain his availability whilst trying to strengthen and rehabilitate the groin at the same time.

"Unfortunately this was not possible and it is hoped that surgery should rectify the problem although means he will be out for a further six to eight weeks.

"Jody has also undergone a minor procedure on a persistent hamstring problem and, while it is always difficult to predict, he is hoping to be available again within five weeks if his rehabilitation progresses well."

TC or not TC?

Whether the Wolves board answered that question correctly remains to be seen. But what their experience since sacking Mick McCarthy shows is that they, and all of those fans who had called for the manager's head following the defeat to Sandwell, greatly underappreciated how difficult it would be to find an adequate replacement.

The leading candidates - Alan Curbishley, Walter Smith and Steve Bruce - decided they would rather stay unemployed than take the helm of one of English football's great old clubs in its current predicament. Neil Warnock was interested but got an offer from Championship side Leeds first and Brian McDermott chose to stay at Reading.

Their individual decisions and reasons for them are fine by me, but let's face it, it was embarrassing.

Thanks for the memories Super Mick

I can't remember what year it was when I started supporting Wolves but I reckon it was around 25 years ago.

For about 20 of those years, Wolves were awful. Not bottom of the football league awful, that was before my time, but a great many fans still remember it. Awful in the sense that they were terminally disappointing. The big old club in the wrong division, always falling short despite an expensive squad and a succession of big name-managers. At times, it was embarrassing.

Then along came Mick McCarthy and supporting Wolverhampton Wanderers became an entirely different experience. Super Mick made me proud to support Wolves again.

A depressing statistic

Wolves' latest defeat, at the hands of Liverpool, was the 20th consecutive game in which the team failed to keep a clean sheet. Frankly, that's pathetic.

The Reds are flying high at the moment so in theory I can forgive shipping a few against them. What angers me is that we made it easy for them with the type of fundamental mistakes that have cost us dearly in a fair few of the other 19.

It seems like there are no lessons being learned and I see no indication that the next fixture will be any different.

Reality bites

Mick McCarthy is always good for a quote and after the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Villa, he came up with a nice little soundbite. "A penalty, a sending off, someone carried off," he said. "I don't know where Lady Luck was today but she wasn't in a gold shirt that's for sure."

As well as it summed up his disappointment in his side get nothing from a largely excellent display though, it wasn’t accurate and it masked the reality of what went wrong at Molineux.

You’ve been Frimponged

Don’t tell Arsene Wenger, but we’ve just found the player that he has needed ever since Patrick Viera left his side.
How many times since the big Frenchman departed have you heard a pundit say that Arsenal is a great team but they lack a bit of bite in the centre of the park?
If only the Gunners had a player like Frimpong – mobile, good on the ball, strong, fearless.
Oh wait a minute, they do . . . and it’s him.

How are we not bottom?

Forget the immaculate conception, the miracle us Wolves fans should be thankful for this Christmas is that our team is not rock bottom of the Premier League.
The abysmal form of Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan is masking the fact that we’re in a deep rut.
In our last 14 games we have conceded two goals or more in 12 of them – that’s just atrocious.
Whatever you have asked Santa for, write to him again and ask for a defence instead.

Well, we got beat soundly at the weekend but I don’t think we should be reading too much in to that. Chelsea haven’t been at their best in recent weeks but they are still Chelsea. Instead I want to look at what I think is a new thing at Wolves – possession football.

Stay upright in the fight

A few pundits have been analysing an incident in our much-needed victory over Wigan at the weekend. Stephen Hunt went through on the keeper, nudged the ball past him and contact was made forcing him off balance. The Wolves man didn’t hit the ground though, he stayed on his feet and tried to play the ball back to a teammate. Wigan defended it and the chance was lost.

Not for the first time when a Wolves player has had the chance to go down and stayed upright and the question dividing both fans and professionals in the game is: should he have hit the deck?

Once again this week, I've been avoiding any football conversations with people who don't already know which team I support.
Keep Karl and carry on . . . losing

It was sad that the biggest cheer at Molineux on Saturday came when the stadium announcer announced that Karl Henry was being withdrawn. I'm totally against supporters making examples of specific players on their own team when they show their discontent.

Karl had a bad game, awful in fact, and it was the right decision to haul him off. But to give ironic cheers when his number is put up is counterproductive. If his confidence is battered how will he improve?

All that said, I think he should be dropped for a run of poor performances.

Talking tactics

It seemed like two Wolves teams turned up to play Liverpool.
The first team took the opening 45 minutes at Anfield and were outplayed.
A second team came out after the break and had the beating of the Reds.
The difference wasn't in the personnel though, it was in the formation.

Mixed emotions on Wolves omissions

It's hard to know whether to welcome or worry about the latest England squad selection. Matt Jarvis isn't in it and I think he should be. Johnson too would have a shout if Fabio picked his players based on form and not who they play for.

It seems unfair to our players and may have an impact on our attractiveness as a club in the future. On the other hand, the Wolves fan in me shouts louder than the England fan.
