At some point during the international break, Wolves lost the ability to defend. Ever since then we have leaked goals like a team doomed to relegation. Conceding seven in 180 minutes is just plain awful. What has happened to that solid back four that I was praising a few weeks ago?
The injury to Doyle has been a factor. His work-rate and ability to hold up the ball allows us to play 4-5-1 and still carry an attacking threat. The packed midfield then protects the defence.
But while the switch to 4-4-2 may account for a couple of the goals in the last two games, the majority have been down to elementary errors. Nolan ran free in to the box, Hennessey was too slow coming out to him – goal.
Elokobi was simply out of position as Ameobi rose above him – goal.
Heitinga found Osman in loads of space out on the right, his cross picked out Beckford who got in between Berra and Stearman – goal.
Elokobi misdirects a header which lands at the feet of Neville – goal.
Fletcher misdirects a pass, it breaks to Bilyaletdinov – goal.
Those kind of mistakes will cost you games in the Championship, never mind the Premier League. They need to stop right now or we’ll be relegated for sure.
Consolation came from the other games at the weekend. Wigan, West Ham and Blackpool all lost as well so we’re still just one point from safety. Birmingham and Blackburn drew so they are only three points above us too.
There’s a little league of misery down there and all we need to do is finish above three of the other strugglers. Cut out the mistakes and that is still possible.
