Wigan Athletic

After almost losing our manager, lots of our big names being linked with a move away form the DW Stadium and hardly any transfer gossip concerning new recruits to speak of. I guess it could be a better summer.

Obviously it could be worse. We still have our Premier League status, thanks to the miracle of the last day of the season (Incidentally, how long ago does that seem now?), but it does seem like it's going to be a long summer.

It was great that Martinez decided to stay. It actually made me think that football isn't all about greed and money. I feel that all parties concerned played everything correctly too - we didn't hold back from letting Martinez talk to Villa and Villa themselves handled everything in a proper fashion. So Martinez stays now for at least one more season, he's seeing the job through and no one can fault him for doing that.

So if Bobby is staying, who's going to be leaving Wigan? Rodallega and N'Zogbia are the names that seem to be in the football gossip columns every day. I think that N'Zogbia will go. In fact, I'd go as far to say I'd be astonished if he's with us when the season kicks off in August. There's just too many rumours flying around to make me think that he's staying. Probably off to Sunderland or Villa if you ask me. Rodallega is a different story. I actually think he'll stay with us. Why? Well, I just think there's times when he's so inconsistent and I'm just not sure whether another Premier League club will be willing to stump up the large amount of cash that we're sure to be demanding for him.

What's really worrying me this summer is the fact that we don't seem to be getting even linked with any players never mind actually buying anyone. Obviously, a club like Wigan can't just go around splashing the cash in the manner of the Manchester City's of this world. We have to buy smart. I think we should be looking to the Championship to recruit. There's some quality players around, we just have to look for them. Buying from the lower divisions doesn't always work out - but for every Jason Scotland there's always a Tim Cahill that could be playing for us.

There's still a good six weeks or so until the season starts. It's going to be an interesting summer.

Since when has stability been discontent?

If our transfer target are in the press before they've been signed up, you can bet we'll miss out on them to other clubs.

I'm in the same boat as you lot. Lets start hearing a name or two. I don't want to be a pessimist, but without bringing in some new blood we can't rely on Al Habsi to draw every game for us. Roberto plays a solid style, and maybe him and Big Dave think we have the players we need to bring this to fruition, but I'm not sold. If N'zog goes, so goes a third of Wigan's goals, not to mention the playmaking.
We all know we aren't goign to qualify for Europe, but something other than 17th would be nice.
