Happy New Year everyone ! Despite a lacklustre result against Newcastle I'm feeling optimistic for 2011. We've got our noses in front in the relegation fight and now is the time to kick on.

The result against Arsenal was particularly encouraging. If we can play with that tenacity and desire for the rest of the campaign we should be fine. Bearing in mind we were playing with 10 men in the latter stages I thought we were brilliant and Tom Cleverley has been really special in midfield so far.

The festive campaign wasn't too bad really was it ? Winning against Wolves was a must considering the implications of where we'd be in the league if we hadn't. I thought Rodallega has looked sharp through all of recent games.

The trouble is, all of our relegation threatened rivals have also been picking up points lately. Wolves won at Anfield and West Ham are on a mini revival of sorts. I really think Blackburn are going to be in deep trouble soon though. At the moment they look in a relatively comfortable position but they haven't looked too convincing in their recent games and have played at least one more game then any of their rivals. With an inexperienced manager at the helm they might find themselves in a lot of trouble as the season goes on.

Obviously January is the time when transfer gossip and speculation reaches a crescendo. At the moment I haven't heard too much regarding Wigan. It looks like Boselli will go on loan - probably to Italy and there is a danger that Manchester United, with their current injuries will recall Cleverley which I really hope doesn't happen as he's really been our star performer in the last few days. I think he'll go on to be a real talent for United for years to come.

It's a shame that the capture of Boselli hasn't really worked out. I thought he could have been a fantastic buy but he's looked devoid of all confidence in the last couple of months. A loan move looks like it would be the best situation for him but sadly I think it will be a deal with a view to a permanent move. I don't think we'll be seeing him again.

With Boselli about to leave we're really lacking in the striking department at present. There were a few noises about us getting Frederico Macheda on loan but as I write this, it looks as if he will be joining Sampdoria. At least though, Martinez is trying to address the attacking flaws that the team currently has. I expect us to bring a striker in either on loan or as a permanent deal but who though, that's the question.

Anyone have any ideas ?
