Wigan Athletic

A good result at Everton still hasn't done us much good in regards of league position. We currently find ourselves in the relegation zone in the lofty heights of 18th position. This still shouldn't detract from what was a gutsy performance away at Everton.

When I say gutsy, that's really what it was. There were times in the game when we appeared to be hanging on by our finger nails. I guess a lot of people would say that we rode our luck but I think we deserved our draw in the end if only for our resolute defending.

Towards the end we could even have snatched the win. Ronnie Stam's shot producing an excellent save from Tim Howard. I have to admit, when I first saw Stam strike the ball, I really thought it was in.

It's been said before, quite often in fact, but I really hope this result see's our season start to turn for the better. We've proved that we can travel away to tricky teams and pick up results (Everton and Spurs) and last season we had some magnificent results at the DW stadium (Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal), we just need to marry these kind of stand out performances with some more consistent results.

It's all very well raising our game for the big guns but when we can't seem to get ourselves going for the winnable games, it just makes everything ultimately count for nothing. Our next two games will prove whether we've got what it takes to turn the corner. We're at home to Villa and away to Wolves, now, I think that 4 points from those two games is very achievable. I guess we'll have to wait and see what kind of Wigan turn up.

Moving on to slightly different matters, the news of both Newcastle and Blackburn giving their managers their P45's for reasons that seem to have little to do with football has really brought it home to me just what a stable club Wigan Athletic are. We've stuck with Martinez, often through times when there has probably been ample opportunity to give him the boot. I hope it pays off. Love or hate Uncle Dave, I think he runs our club in a decent, honest way and he puts people like Mike Ashley to shame. We're a small club mixing it with the big boys and I think we can hold our heads up high. Long may it continue.
