Wigan Athletic

I honestly thought that we could nick a point against United. Silly me ? Well, for the first half at least we perhaps looked the better side and the home team had offered very little until we completely imploded and chucked away what could have been an excellent performance.

Is there any debate ? Should Alcaraz and Rodallega have been sent off ? Personally, I think so. Alcaraz's especially was just so blatantly a sending off offence. It's a shame because it completely ruined an enterprising display from us. With 9 men we stood no chance of getting anything from this game. I'd be interested to hear what other fans think though.

I thought it was embarassing that Martinez tried to blame our downfall on the ref. I don't think the ref could have done much else apart from send Alcaraz and Rodallega off. Let's get this straight - I'm not blaming Martinez either. It looked like he had set up the side perfectly to get a result judging by the first half performance, but it just wasn't to be. That's not Martinez's or the ref's fault, it's just bad luck, pure and simple. The way I see it though, with some of the things that have happened to us this season, we are definitely due a huge slice of luck somewhere down the line. I'm going to start doing the lottery - any other Wigan fans fancy joining me !?

I thought United looked poor. Especially in the first half where they really toiled. It is kind of weird how they are so lucky but that's a debate for another time and probably on a different page !

So, now we look ahead to Saturday's game against West Ham. Can I call it 'massive' without too much understatement ? I caught a bit of the Hammer's match against Liverpool. Wow - if you think we have problems, check them out and you'll start feeling a hell of a lot better ! I'm not saying Saturday is going to be an easy game for us - far from it, but West Ham is a team we simply have to beat if we are planning to still be in this division come August. It's going to be an interesting game, although I think it will be simply too tense to actually be enjoyable to watch. I'm going to call it as a 3-2 win for Wigan.

Hopefully the next time I write I'll be discussing a magnificent 3-2 victory and my lottery win !

I do think people are misreading Martinez's comments about the referee. I don't beleive that he is talking about the 2 specific incidents that led to the sending's off but that the players were becoming frustrated because the referee was not taking any action against Man U players. Two particular incidents stand out - Vidic's foul on N'Zogbia on the edge of the box and Nani's assualt on Figeroa.

I agree about the red cards... sort of...

Hugo's was blatant: 2 footed, studs up, straight red every time. Alcaraz's was a little more debatable for me: the first yellow was clear, as would be the second, in isolation. But I've lost count of the number of times second bookable offences have been given a 'final warning' instead of the actual second yellow, especially with the Uniteds and Chelseas of this world. Gary Neville was given a final warning for a clear straight red offence earlier this season.

I'm not complaining, as it was a second yellow / sending off offence, but referees' discression should be applied fairly both ways. Which it wasn't... N'Zogbia's penalty that wasn't being the case in point.
