Wigan Athletic

Dare I say it, but we're actually on a little bit of a run at the moment. Just one loss since August and a solid home win against Wolves. I could get used to this!

Some will tell you that the win against Wolves was an unimpressive, laboured outing against a team who played most of the game with ten men. I'm proud of the performance though. It was clear from the moment that Karl Henry was sent off, that Wolves only concern was to defend for their lives and try and nick a point. Two solid banks of four protecting their goal showed the away team's intentions.

To break down a rigid system like the one Wolves were employing can be tough, especially for a team like Wigan who have been struggling for goals as of late. However, we went about things the right way. We were paitent and we passed Wolves into submission. There were times last season, and maybe even at the start of this season that we may not have passed such a test.

Sometimes, it seems fashionable to criticise a team like Wigan, win lose or draw but I thought we were convincing against Wolves so let's have some credit for a change. Wolves barely had a chance to speak of for the whole 90 minutes and we should have scored more then two.

It was a great performance by the Wigan team but Di Santo's performance in particular caught my eye. He looks sharp and I think he'll get better as the season goes on. His stint on loan at Blackburn has taught him a lot and I think he'll gradually start to turn in more live wire performances. A good signing by Martinez.

Before I sign off, I want to ask Wigan fans what they think of Ben Watson. Everytime I've seen him play I've always thought that he looks a decent player and his link up play between midfield and attack seems effective. I've never understood how his performances haven't warranted a greater run in the team. I'll be interested to know what other Latics fans think.

Hi! A good analysis of the game mate!

Watson...... Now where do I start. He has simply been quality for us whenever called upon. Look at arsenal in particular last season. He came on and look what happened. I don't know what he has to do for a start.
In my opinion Diame is a quality player, I rate him highly and think he will be top class in a few years, but he has made very costly mistakes. In my view Watson deserves a shot and the same goes for Moses! I am shocked that he doesn't get a game! What do you think?
My ideal mid would be Moses left, zog right , Diame/Thomas (opposition depending) Watson, Rodallega up front and mcarthy behind. Di santo is looking good I agree but I think Watson would be the missing link in our mid plus imagine the pace we would have in attack if Moses and zog on the wings? It's a tough one!

Watson is a quality player, but our midfield actually has some competition, diame, thomas, gomez, cleverly, mccarthy, mcarthur, and watson. THATS ALL CENTER MIDS
