Wigan Athletic

So, the last two results – one ok(ish) winning 2-1 against Preston, one not so good losing 2-0 against Man City. We’re hardly setting the world alight at the moment. With a tricky few games to come such as Birmingham and Newcastle away I want to see some good performances that will convince me that we aren’t going to struggle this season.

At the moment I still need some convincing. It was a stubborn performance against City on Sunday but we managed a feeble NO shots on target. Nothing, zilch, nada. And therein lies the problem my friends – we just aren’t creating chances at the moment. Some people might look at our first few games and talk about all of the goals we’ve shipped and come to the conclusion that the problem is with our defence. It’s safe to say that Wigan’s defence isn’t one of the strongest in the league but they are being put under tremendous pressure by our complete lack of chances at the other end. As soon as we concede then we just don’t look like we’re going to create anything to get us back in the game.

It’s safe to say that I’m quite worried. Even Blackpool who are the unanimous choice of pundits to go down look ten times as likely as us to score. We don’t really seem to have a striker who is the focus of the attack at the moment and that’s something that needs to be addressed.

We’ve paid a lot of money for Boselli and we have to hope that he can start to repay that transfer tag as the season goes on. At the moment he doesn’t look Premier League class but it’s still early days. I really do think he’s the long term solution to our lack of goals. Once he starts scoring, and I think he will – it’s just a matter of time, we’ll look a different proposition. We can’t just go throughout the season hoping to pick up the odd freak result like we did at Tottenham.

Talking of that win against Tottenham, that was our last game on the road. Saturday see’s us on our travels once more as we face Birmingham. I’m expecting a tough game. Birmingham look an established Premier League team these days and it looks like some our youngsters such as Di Santo and Cleverley could be doubtful for the game. It will be a hard match but hopefully we can get a positive result to start the confidence flowing back into our campaign.

read your artical.i agree with you.we need to be attack minded . we play to much passing football. clueless at front and don't use our speedsters [ wingers ] very well. i would love for martinez to play both wingers and two strikers and go attack minded instead of the slow passing game and when we are outside their area to have a go or find someone instead of passing back and keep repeating our movement and start passing back again . what we did at spurs wa great but we should play that way every game.the city game we gave them to much time . preston game we finally played two strikers but no wingers.we tried to pass the ball around but got nowhere alas to say clueless at front. i'm glad we won but we need to up our tempo if we are to stay in the prem

I'm curios to see what you are going to write about last night...

But following on from this previous article, Di Santo looks out of place. There were countless opportunities were he just did make a run into the box and we lost possesion following a through ball. I'd almost prefer if if Hugo moved into the striker role again and Moses got moved onto the wing

One good thing we have though is our goalkeeping. It seems that we were lucky twice, initially with getting Al Habsi on-loan, secondly with the injury that made him a starter. This is surely giving our whole team some confidence in the back that will result into them opening-up towards offence and resulting into more goals (hopefully)
