With relegation now having been officially avoided it's time to start reflecting on this season. Sometimes it's easy to forget just what an achievement it is for a club like Wigan to be in the Premier League at all.
The first target for any campaign has to be to preserve our Premier status. The fact that we've done this means that this season cannot be labelled a complete disapointment. Sometimes when I hear fans moan about the state of our team I think that maybe they've forgotten that just a few years ago we were in the old division three, playing teams like Scunthorpe.
Every Premier League campaign we have is an adventure for us and this has been no exception. We've had the highs of beating teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool and the lows of losing at Blackpool and the 'infamous' game against Spurs. We have to get better next season and I think we will. We have a manager who has grown more into the role as time has gone on and we have a core group of players such as Figueroa, Rodallega, Kirkland and N'zogbia.
So, before everyone gets all doom and gloom about this season not being as good as the last, lets put things into perspective. We've had our problems this season but we've come through unscathed. Even as I write this Bobby is already masterminding our next campaign which will see us qualify for Europe.
Just the small matter of Chelsea at the bridge to come first though !

I think wigan will be humiliated by chelsea with at least 7 nil drubbing... or more...coz chelsea are much superior than lower rank team...like Wigan...

Having been at Wigan`s first ever game in the football league in `78, it never ceases to amaze me that we are playing Liverpool, Everton, Man United, Chelsea and the rest week after week. Survival will always be the number 1 priority, but I am disappointed with this season`s lack of consistency. The defending has been of the Keystone Cop variety occasionally and has rarely looked as good as average. That`s where we need to improve the most. I agree that we do have a good core, but won`t Rodallega, N`zogbia and Figeroa leave in the summer? I think they will. That leaves us looking for replacements, yet again. I suppose we have to hope to find more players like Figeroa, Rodallega and Palacios somewhere. Surely it has to get harder to do that year in, year out. I`m still not sold on Bobby, but let`s hope next year he will show us all what he`s made of.
I`m already looking forward to next year, roll on more top class summer signings!
