I'm sure a lot of pundits will be saying how we earned a 'precious' point on Wednesday against Portsmouth, but surely we should expect to be beating a bottom of the table club who could barely scramble together a full team ?

Fair play to Pompey. They made life very difficult for us and although if you look at some of the possession and shots on target stats it looks like we murdered them, we never broke them down and were exceptionally wasteful in front of goal.
It has to be said that the way Portsmouth's players have handled themselves this season really is a credit to football. In fact, they're almost in danger of giving footballers a good name. I can only stand back and admire the hard work and spirit they've shown for most of the season. Let's face it, the deduction of nine points left them immediately effectively relegated but they still go into every game showing a huge amount of desire. They put a lot of teams in our league to shame.
Back to Wigan and our slow, ambling, painful crawl to safety. I genuinely think we'll stay up - just. I think we're amazingly lucky this season though - any other season and we'd have gone down. We've just been fortunate that there are three worse teams then us this year - Portsmouth with probably the most bizarre top flight season in living memory and the general awfulness of Hull and Burnley.
I don't know what other readers think but I'm not sure we deserve to stay up out of any qualities we've displayed. We merely seem to be staying up because three other teams have been dire. Would you describe us as one of those teams that are 'too good to go down' ? I certainly wouldn't.
To say we were disappointing tonight is like saying that Tiger Woods has had the odd relationship problem lately. We just never looked that sharp upfront and Portsmouth could always cope with whatever we threw at them and I'm sorry but as hard as he tries Jason Scotland is just NOT a Premier League striker. Another game from him where chances went begging and the Latics fans have well and truly started to lose their patience.
Also, why did Victor Moses only come on after the 88th minute? Jason Scotland has had so many chances in a Wigan shirt and has not taken them (quite literally) ....I know Moses is still young but surely he deserves more of a chance than just a five minute run out?
But I guess winning this game comfortably and easily pulling clear of the relegation zone wouldn't be our style would it?
By the way...who would get your vote for Wigan's player of the season ? ...I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks for reading.

Fantastic blog post. Where can I read more?
I think James McCarthy has been a great signing this year.

I thought Rodallega has been decent. Well, by Wigan's standards this season, that is.

Player of the season - tough call, but probably N`Zogbia for me. Not sure I agree with you on Scotland. He`s worth holding on to and like many strikers, he may hit his stride after a bad year. Scharner continued to disappoint last night and he just does not have the skills to play behind the striker(s). I still think the biggest problem is the back 4. Until they are organised properly, Wigan won`t do as well as they should. That`s down to Martinez and he`s done a horrible job with the defense. Appalling. I like what he`s trying to do overall, but he needs to bring in a coach to take hold of the defense and soon.

I find it appropriate for the kind words to the pompey players. i doubt many of the "top four clubs" players would show such grit and determination in a perriless season. good on ya.

N'Zogbia is player of the season for me as well. He may not have the goals of Rodallega, but he's been a handful for the opposition week in and week out. I also think we'll stay up, but those upcoming fixtures with West Ham and Hull are looking pretty big now, eh?

I read your blogs reguarly and always seem to agree with what you say. Do you post stuff elsewhere too ? Would really like to read some more if possible ?
For me Rodallega is the player of the season. Just hope he's with us next season.
Nice touch with the stuff about Pompey, I agree 100% Avram Grant has really gone up in my estimation.

I just wish we had more consistency. We'd be safe by now.
Just wanted to say I enjoyed reading.

You have to like what Martinez is trying to do as a Arsenal fan its what the prem needs more of.
Hopefully it will come together and the whole "we need a good pitch" thing impresses me to hopefully its good enough for us to show you what you are striving for. Wembley could take a feather out of your cap.

Nzogbia for POS - fantasy stats tell that alone. The biggest problem at Wigan has been Chris Kirklands, ill fiting grey shirt, it's shite, please buy him a new one. Even the Pink of James and Ashdown is more appealing (just).
Seriously though I read a 4-4-2 article which said Martinez is the new Arsene Wenger - ah no. I've hated watching Wigan this season, and the pitch has been rubbish too. Portsmouth for the CUP

Player of the Year should go to Maynor Figueroa, without a doubt. Enjoy him now as he'll be elsewhere in the near future.

I can tell you who the worst player has been, with all due respect to Scotland, it's Paul Scharner without a doubt. I haven't forgotten what he's done for the team in years past but this year he has been nothing but a detriment to the team. He refuses to play in the position that the team needs him the most, he is sloppy on the ball, all he cares about is trying to get on the scoresheet, and we all know he has one foot out the door already because of his inflated opinion of his own abilities. Now he storms out of an intense end of the season game because he is taken out in a tactical substitution? Way to support your team, Paul.
On the other hand I agree it comes down to any one of N'Zogbia, Rodellega, or my choice, Figueroa. Not that the defense deserves much credit this year, but I feel we could have seen a few more games like the 9-1 Spurs drubbing when he was out injured if we didn't have Maynor in the back line this season.

im not really a Wigan fan but if I had to pick it would either be N'Zogbia or Rodallega, both of them have been great.

This blog entry seems almost ironic after the big win over Arsenal a few minute ago. Congratulations to Wigan for making a "faster" drive to safety.

Looks like you urged them on to a stunning performance against Arsenal.
