Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has again questioned Steve Bruce's transfer record at the club as Roberto Martinez looks to make further changes in January.

Earlier in the season, Whelan claimed Bruce had made "a few dodgy signings" during his time at Wigan. Bruce suggested Whelan was "trying to take the heat off his manager" and said he would be happy to sign Hugo Rodallega and Charles N'Zogbia if they were the players in question.

However, with many of the success stories of Bruce's reign - including Emile Heskey, Lee Cattermole, Wilson Palacios and Antonio Valencia - sold off by the summer, Whelan insists there has been little for Martinez to work with.

"Roberto inherited a very, very iffy squad," he told the Wigan Evening Post. "I know Steve Bruce questioned me on it but it's true.

"Roberto has come in, and he is putting together the squad he wants. He is happy with the players he has brought in and happy with the players he has moved out.

"Roberto is a perfectionist, and he is always looking for perfection on the field. He wants to play sheer football back to front, he wants the ball knocked around, and it has taken a while for him to get that through to some of our lads.

"Roberto wants the players to find space constantly. Some players can do that easily and some players can't, but he is working with the players all across the squad, and it is showing. His style and the way he plays is good and I like it a lot."

He added: "We've already brought in three players, but Roberto is constantly on the look-out for quality players and he wants a striker now. We're looking at that and we'll see if we can help him."

Wigan have been linked with Rangers' Kris Boyd and Celtic's Scott McDonald.

Meanwhile, winger Daniel De Ridder says he is pleased to have agreed a loan move to Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Martinez says the deal is "very close" to completion and De Ridder, 25, feels the deal represents a good opportunity.

"Hapoel Tel Aviv are in second place behind Maccabi Haifa and still involved in the Europa League," he told Sportweek. "They finished first from a group with big teams likes Hamburg, Celtic and Rapid Vienna. Now they play Rubin Kazan and have a chance to make further progress."
