The holiday season is finally over so now we can finally concentrate on our beloved game with no distractions to take hold of us - or rather we will when the country has stopped grinding to a halt because of a few centimetres of snow.....but enough of my soap box politics ! So, whats in store for Wigan this year ? Will things start to pick up or will we get sucked into a relegation dogfight ?
Well i'm sorry to say but I really am starting to think that the second half of this season is going to be incredibly difficult for us. I'm starting to really question Martinez and some of his decisions. For example, I can't seem to work out why we were trying to buy Mcdonald from Celtic. In my opinion we dont need another striker but we do desperately need some steel in our defence and midfield. It doesn't take a genius to notice that we're leaking goals at the moment. The fact that we have the worst goal difference in the Premier League might be something of a clue !
I'm hoping that we can hang onto some of our better players during the window. The vultures seem to have been circling around Figueroa for a few months now and it's going to take something special for the lad to still be here come February. Worryingly, there seems to be mounting speculation that Kirkland could be moving soon as well with Sunderland seeming to be quite interested. Would be a shame if either of those two were to move. Am I not alone in thinking that I don't trust Martinez to come up with suitable replacements if they do go ?
Our results don't seem to be changing that much in their wild inconsistency. Take our results over Xmas and New Year - a draw with Blackburn, a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester United and a 4-1 win against Hull. What I wouldnt do for some boring mid table stability !
In all seriousness though, we need to step up to the plate this year. There's been instances this season where we've shown relegation form. Hopefully Martinez can start to rise to the challenge.
Hope you all had a good festive season !

Im sorry but i totally disagree with us not needing another striker, We cant keep relying on Hugo, especially if the rumours are true that Birminghan and Stoke are both tabling 10 million pound bids. Who else do we have? Jason Scotland who hasnt scored once and in my opinion belongs back in the championship, hes a absolute waste of space.

I'm with Nadine - I think we're in desperate need of a striker, although I can see the need for a centre-back as well, Bramble hasn't been up to snuff so far this season. Short of Hugo, who scores goals?
I don't think Kirkland has looked great so far either and if he continues to get injured is it worth keeping faith in him?
The left-back we've been linked with has got a good reputation in Spain so if he was to come I'd be willing to take the cash for Figueroa.
The midfield has steel (Thomas, Diame and Scharner... all at once sometimes) but lacks creativity. A driving attacking midfielder would help Hugo.
Worst possible scenario is that outgoings happen in the last week leaving Martinez with no time for replacements and struggling to stay in the league. Movement needs to happen this week or early next to avoid disaster.

We need to keep Kirkland in the back, while I'm on the fence with Figueroa. If we can get a good bid for Maynor, it may be worth it. Its nice to see progress to fill holes in the back 4. We have to start solidifying the back before looking forward (we are scoring plenty of goals to stay up). Just look at Birmingham, they don't score goals, but they don't give up any either and they're near the top. If we can get a solid back line, we'll remain in the Prem.
