Wigan Athletic

Thre was reports this week that Wigan have hired a snow plough in order to beat the freeze at the DW stadium. Please God, let that not be the only arrival for us this Winter !

I mentioned in my last posting that we are going to need some wholesale changes in order to keep pace in the Premier League. Looking at our results so far I still stick by that analysis. Our season is very much at a crossroads and from where we are at the moment we can either push onto mid-table and maybe even Europe (Best case scenario obviously) or we can see a total lack of confidence, see our results suffer and get embroiled in a relegation battle. Our season is really walking on a tightrope at the moment.

Results so far havent been too bad. We lost to Liverpool but showed enough effort to maybe get something from the game. We had a draw away at Stoke - which I don't think can be described as a bad result as Stoke is a difficult place to go these days.

I was however a bit dissapointed that we only got a draw at the game at Blackburn yesterday. Both teams had chances to win the game in the second half but a point was to be the final result for both teams. I just think though - and no disrespect to Blackburn fans here - that Blackburn at home is the sort of game we should be winning if we want to push onto mid table like I described earlier.

Our next two games are away at Manchester United and home at Aston Villa. Two really tricky games. My optimism at the start of the season has really given way to negativity....when I look at those two games, rather then thinking about if we can get a result I seem to be thinking 'I hope we don't get thrashed' ......Bad isnt it ? Is anyone else thinking the same thing ? I was so looking forward to this season as well ! Hope Martinez can turn this around.

Knowing how inconsistent Wigan are maybe my next column will be about how we put 6 past Man U !?

Hope you all had a great Christmas everyone !

We really do need some help at the back, a combatative midfielder and someone up front. Will anyone good enough choose to go to Wigan in January? I very much doubt it. By all accounts we will lose Figeroa and maybe Scharner, but why can`t the brass at Wigan tell other teams to get lost? Why do we have to lose the heart of our team every January? If the player wants to go, Ok, let them go in the summer. Losing Figeroa will be catastrophic.

I`m still shocked by the idiotic mistakes the back 4 make regularly - Torres` goal was typical. I hear a lot about how this back 4 almost got us to Europe, but I just don`t agree. Having Palacios and Cattermole made the back 4 look better than they were and having Bruce allowed for better organisation at the back. Diame looked good, but now looks tired, which is what always happens when players go to the Premier League from abroad. And am I the only one who thinks Scharner is a far better defender than midfield player?

Merry Christmas to all.

Paul, I know this is a little touchy because Dave Whelan has done so much to bring top flight football to Wigan, but am I the only one who is a little down on him right now? Your success can become your own worst enemy in some cases and without the first half of last season I don't think I'd be feeling this way. In a year now we've gone from European contenders to relegation battlers and I blame Whelan. Losing Bruce probably couldn't be stopped but in the past year we've sold Heskey for I think 5-6 million pounds, Palacios for 15 million, Valencia for 18 million, and Cattermole for 8 million, a total of roughly 45 million pounds for just four players. If Whelan is serious about keeping Wigan in the top flight, then why hasn't he invested more of those proceeds to replace the players he's selling? Are we to expect them to sell Figueroa and Rodellega for a huge profit next? If so I think Dave will be counting his millions from the stands of a championship game next season.
