Ok, so I know we've been inconsistent but it's getting a bit silly now ! Our last three results have been a 1-1 draw, a 9-1 defeat and a 1-0 win. We seem to be having more mood swings then a teenage girl.....
I was at the (now infamous) game at White Hart Lane to see us take on Spurs and it was one of the weirdest games I think i've ever seen. I wouldnt say we were the better team in the first half but we were definitely giving Spurs a game. In fact it wouldnt have surprised me if we had gone into the break at 1-1 as Jason Scotland had a great chance he probably should have done better with. We started the game slowly but as the half went on we came into the game and N'zogbia was making some good progress on the right. I thought at the very least we'd make life very difficult for Spurs.
And then we came out for the second half.........
I don't know what happened there but I dont think I have ever seen ANY team suffer such a collapse. Much has been made of Lennon turning Edman inside out but to be honest I think criticism could be aimed at anyone of 10 players. Kirkland was the only player who seemed to be trying.
The game itself was bad enough but I thought it was a bit disapointing that when the final whistle went the only player who applauded the away fans was Kirkland. Obviously a 9-1 drubbing is kind of embarassing so I can't blame the other players too much for wanting to get off the pitch quicker then the speed of light but at least one player seemed to appreciate the fact that the fans had made the long journey to see them. Cheers Chris.
So now we come off the back of a 1-0 victory against Sunderland. A result I think is fantastic considering Sunderland look a decent team this season (Top 8 material if you ask me) and it must have taken a lot of character to bounce back after the Spurs result. I think that it could have been all to easy for us to suffer a complete collapse of confidence after that thrashing which could well have led to us getting sucked into a relegation battle, definitely one of our most important wins of the season so far.
One of the most pleasing things about the Sunderland game was to see the players really going for it right from the first whistle. You could tell that the Spurs result really hurt them and they were going to do everything to put it right. That sort of character is going to be needed more often if we want to do well this season.
As a final point, I don't know if anyone has seen the news today regarding the fact that Premier League clubs have spent over £70 million on Player agents fees. Many newspapers have published exactly what clubs have spent since October, 2008. In the top four positions are clubs you'd expect to find: Man City, Liverpool etc....but in 5th place....guess who ? Yep, its us weirdly enough ! Am I the only one who finds it suprising that we spent more on agents then clubs like Arsenal, I've always thought we were a really well run club, hope thats still the case.
Thats it from me. Hopefully a good result against Birmingham to write about soon !
