Wow...the league is finally back and what a weird start ! Only Wigan could play off the park a team who flirted with Champions League Qualification and yet barely 3 days later lose to a team who literally havent been in the same league as Wigan for the last few seasons. Fasten your seatbelts...looks like this could be a bit of a topsy turvy season.
It's hard to not take positives from the Villa game. We were sensational to be quite blunt ! Roberto Martinez already looks to have done a good job in getting his ideas across. The creativity and passing and movement off the ball were top draw. Villa seemed to be blown away by the invention we were offering. What a goal by Rodallega too...check it out if you havent seen this already. Definitely recommended.
Now to contrast this to the Wolves game. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say the better team won - I think this is one of those occasions. Wolves deserved to win that game just through sheer battling and determination. They never gave us a second to settle on the ball and play some of the silky stuff that we saw at the Villa game. If Wolves play like that for the rest of the season they should finish in a comfortable mid-table position (Or every player will end up shattered by Christmas and they'll sink like a stone !) we simply had no answer to their brute force and we seemed to be all over the place - especially with their free kicks and corners. I can't think of meaningful chance we had until later in the second half.
Here's some other random thoughts from observing our first two games:
- Hugo Rodallega is looking like a class player. Have Wigan unearthed another gem ?
- Charles 'Insomnia' Nzogbia has started the season well. He seems to be an excellent spark of creativity down the left. When decent left sided players are in such short supply it puzzles me why someone like Villa would pay £12 million for a one-legged Stewart Downing when we picked up Nzogbia for about £5 million
- Havent seen much of Jason Scotland so far. Have we really signed him just for him to come off the bench now and again ? He seemed to offer something different when he came on tonight. Maybe we should give him more of a chance ?
- Will Wigan be able to adapt against the teams who play more of a physical game ? It's all very well passing and moving it against the teams who also play like that....but it worries me how we'll adapt when we come up against Stoke or Bolton. I think we're going to have show a bit of diversity this season and not be afraid of trying to win ugly now and again.
- Isn't it about time Kirkland got another chance with England ? Surely even if it's just for sitting on the bench he must be a better option then Joe Hart who looked like he had an awful season last season ?
- Just being in the Premier League and beating teams like Villa is fantastic considering that since January we've lost: Wilson Palacios, Lee Cattermole, Luis Antonio Valencia, and the form and motivation of Amir Zaki. What team wouldnt suffer without losing those players ?
- Just wanted to finish by saying how great it was that Sir Bobby Robson was paid tribute by all the Premier League fans over the weekend. What a decent man and a true gent.

Enjoyed reading your article this morning. My Father and I have invested in season tickets this season for the first time and I largely agree with your summary of last nights game with the addition of two observations:
- The Fans: I've been to Wigan a few times in previous seasons and The JJB (now The DW) has never struck me as a fortress. Last night, especially for a first home game, the fans seemed scared off by the support and noise coming from the away end. If this happens again against strong, local, away support (Stoke in particular) then I think the team will suffer.
- The Midfield: Credit to Wolves for not letting us do this but I thought there was a distinct lack of quality and ability to turn and face from the midfield. Someone needs to drop deep and pick up from the defence. Case in point: how many times did Bramble and Scharner pass it between themselves last night because there was simply no other option?
Interested to hear your thoughts.
