Ahh! One nil to the Arse eh? 'twas ever thus huh, sports fans? Confined as I was to Match of the Day highlights, it was interesting to gauge reactions to this from other sources.

Some saw this as a continuing improvement that had only been broken by the home defeat to Newcastle while others saw this as nothing more than a backs-to-the-wall frenzy that almost worked but which, ultimately, ended in the inevitable.

One reaction I saw suggested that the Hammers didn't 'want it enough' and the constant rearguard action was more down to giving the ball away in crucial areas than any type of tactical nous.

Reduced to being in the same situation as many Soccernet fans who write to me here i.e only seeing things on TV; I'm not sure I have any answers currently. I recently run a thread on leading unofficial site westhamonline.net saying this very thing and the replies seem to indicate that many fans are similarly confused.

Most are puzzled by the Hammers constant battles at the bottom and, along with inevitable requests for the sacking of Grant and the purchase of two or three high-quality players, it seems few can put their finger on what is going wrong.

Anyway, as far as this match was concerned, Rob Green turned in his usual brilliant display against the Gunners and Song scored the only goal two minutes from the end. Ho-hum!

Stop making poor substitutions and then conceding straight after.Look back you will see this is a recurring theme. And just drop Carlton Cole .He changes everything for the negative.Use Nouble who would at least be new to some defenders.Cole is easy to stop as he is such a fairy.Change these two things alone and watch us climb up the table,

I thought it was a great effort by us, and a heart-breaking, undeserved loss. The officiating was about as bad and one-sided as the US v. Slovenia, and West Ham did not allow this to affect them mentally. They stayed strong to the finish. The goal was clean, but Song is about as shameless as they come. Green was world class. The three points could have just as easily fallen our way. They MUST build on this and go through Birmingham.

I believe our biggest need area is left back and the midfield. Behrami and Noble are average at best, and Boa Morte is barely passable although his play is more inspired this year. The difference is palpable when Dyer is on the field but his health is another matter. We showed some creativity and penetration going forward against arsenal which is no small feat

Billy Blagg Born at an early age a mere defenders' spit from the Boleyn ground, Billy Blagg has seen every West Ham game from 1898 onwards. Blagg was mentioned by Kenneth Wolstenholme in 1966 as one of the people on the pitch during the famous Hammers win over West Germany that lifted the World Cup and he returned to the pitch again for the 1975 FA Cup Final but stayed on the terrace for 1980 FA Cup victory. Blagg, 26, now lives with his eighth wife and innumerable children in a small semi-detached with chintz curtains in Dagenham, Essex and still attends every Hammers match and training session.
