"Obviously we're disappointed. We were 2-1 up and feeling quite comfortable, but what a strike from their boy from outside the box. That's just how it goes - what can you do about it? It's difficult winning games in this league and they are a good side, West Brom. We moved the ball about well today but you've got no divine right to win games. We'll try and make the top four and if we don't we'll try again next year."

Once further progress in this season's Champions League was effectively over, Spurs needed to take three points against Stoke to ensure that qualification for the same competition next season remains a realistic possibility. They achieved that aim, thanks in large part to a striker who had been cast as the villain of the piece in the Bernabeu just days earlier. Peter Crouch's two goals brought him back into the fans' good books, no doubt boosting his confidence in the process. Both he and his teammates will need to draw on every ounce of spirit they possess in the next few weeks if they are to maintain their challenge for fourth spot.

No doubt the problem was serious enough, even if the manager's characterization of it sounded strange as the curtain rose on one of the biggest games in the club's history.
