The elusive 100th goal in a Tottenham shirt remains just that for Jermain Defoe. His two goals against Wolves earlier this month looked to be something of a false dawn on Saturday at White Hart Lane as he reverted to the poor form that has dogged him so far this season. Chance after chance was spurned against his former club and on this occasion the likes of van der Vaart, Modric, Lennon and Bale were also unable to find the net and thus spare the misfiring striker's blushes.

Having conceded six goals against Blackpool and Wolves and facing Pato, Robinho and Ibrahimovic, only a brave man would have bet on Spurs keeping a clean sheet in the second leg of the Champions League round of sixteen. That is, of course, exactly what transpired and Spurs now find themselves in the hat for the quarter-final draw. There has already been a lot of talk about avoiding Barcelona in the last eight but by the same token, none of the teams remaining in the competition will relish the prospect of a visit to White Hart Lane.

So Spurs can get a result at the San Siro but not at Bloomfield Road. After his side's 3-1 win, Ian Holloway mused "Does that make us better than AC Milan. I don't think so!" A well judged assessment as it turned out, given that Blackpool were then whipped 4-0 at Wolves four days later. And where do Spurs travel for their next league fixture? Molineux, of course. Perhaps Wolves are now counted better than Barcelona and Spurs are going to concede seven.
