Tottenham Hotspur

While the eyes of most fans may be turned towards South Africa rather than the goings-on at their own clubs, speculation never sleeps - not least at Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs are reputedly linked with moves for Diego Forlan, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Steven Pienaar. All three are featuring for their countries at the World Cup and any one of them would be a great addition to the Spurs squad. Harry Redknapp is, in his capacity as a BBC pundit, ideally placed to run the rule over all of them, if he so desires. The most persistent rumour seems to center on Forlan, and one plausible option might be to sell Pavlyuchenko and/or Keane to bring in the necessary funds, or perhaps even use one of them as a makeweight to seal the deal. Despite his late-season run in the side, Pavlyuchenko's shirt would still appear to be hanging on a shaky nail at the club. Keane has scored 12 goals in 16 appearances - albeit in an inferior league - while on loan at Celtic. Since his stock is currently as high as it is ever likely to be, now would seem to be the ideal time to move him on.

Two English midfielders are also the subject of transfer talk, with Stoke reportedly interested in Jermaine Jenas and Villa in David Bentley. Both have talent to burn, and perhaps it could burn brighter away from White Hart Lane. If Jenas and Bentley do depart, it would leave Spurs light in terms of midfield options. Redknapp has soft-pedaled his interest in Joe Cole, a player whom he knows well from their time together at West Ham, and is of the opinion that the player may have already agreed terms with another Premier League club - perhaps even that other team from North London. There is, however, a potentially even better prospect. While expressing surprise about Michael Dawson being selected for the England squad of 30 yet not featuring in any of the warm-up games, Redknapp talked in the same terms about another player, namely West Ham's Scott Parker:

"They tell me Scott trained fantastically every day in training and could not have done any more. He worked his socks off. But whatever he did he was not going to go. Someone said to me he felt like a ghost on the trip, like Dawson, they were there but not there and they could sense that".

Parker - inexplicably left out of the final 23 behind out of sorts ex-Spur, Michael Carrick - would be a fantastic acquisition. He possesses a drive and a physical presence that only Wilson Palacios in the current Spurs side could match. The scenario to bring him to the Lane makes perfect sense. Jamie O'Hara - a player with Parker-like attributes - moves to Upton Park to be reunited with the new West Ham manager, Avram Grant, for whom he performed so well during his time on loan from Spurs at Portsmouth. Parker, in turn, joins Spurs. Simple. Or at least let's hope so.

One issue that thankfully is not subject to speculation is the future of Luka Modric, who has signed a new six-year deal at the club, despite the overtures of Sir Alex Ferguson. Modric has said, commendably, that "Tottenham Hotspur gave me my chance in the Premier League and I want to go on to achieve great success here with them". His contract should mean that the Spurs fans will enjoy watching the 24 year old Croatian at the peak of his footballing career. It is thrilling to think that the best may yet be to come from the club's one indisputably world class player.

The remaining major rumour surrounds not a player but the manager himself, now that the Liverpool hot seat is vacant. And indeed who could resist the siren song of a club that finished seventh last season and who are mired in debt? Who would want to play Champions League football and so pass up the chance to work with - or should that be for - Gillett and Hicks? Who would want to leave a team moving forward for one that is going backwards?

Jenas has talent to burn? Give us a break! he's crap and we'd be lucky to get 5m out of him. Bentley is also limited, we would do well to get 10m for him and invest this in a player like Diego Capel
Don't think that Levy will sanction a bid for Forlan given his age.
Parker unlikely because we have Huddlestone, Modric, Palacios and now Sandro for the middle. Maybe Harry will bring in one more CM to be able to play Modric on LW from time to time, in which case we'd be better off with an attacking player since all of Hudd, Palacios and Sandro are defensive players. Van der Vaart ideal since he can also play on the wings or behind a striker.

interesting enough article, but what are really the key areas for us? a top class centre back, its like an episode of holby city there! a focused left back/combatative midfielder,a world class forward or maybe carlton cole in a heskyesque type role. But the real way forward for us i believe is more fundimental, what used to be called the boot room. we have Harry, for at least two more years, hopefully longer. Is now not the time to appiont and nurture his successor? The key to any successful business or team is continuity, a la sir alex. which begs the question who would you appiont? I would suggest someone in there 30/40's that has perhaps shown potential in the lower leagues or abroad. we would be hoping for integrity and loyalty, so someone with an affinity for the club. SUGGESTIONS? THOUGHTS?

I think the Forlan deal is a no goer. Leavy would never spend £15-20m on a 30year-old that flopped at utd and would have no re-sale value should he flop again. Not that I like him, but I would prefer Carlton Cole instead... that says enough.
Jenas will and should leave, but I think we will keep Bentley, we have no other options if Lennon is unfit and we will not find a better wing for what we sell him for. I would love to see Joe Cole at the lane, he is the type of player the fans would love and typifies the style in which we play, stubling block is of course: MONEY. Having watched the world cup so far, I am not convinced with any of the strikers we are linked to, I trust in Harry though, how can I not, the man has done more for the club in two seasons then I ever though capable. For once, I am calm this summer, I trust we will not waste money and I beleivewe only need a player or two to compliment what we already have. Lets not forget, this team got into the Champions League.

thought the new hammers owners said they wouldn't sell players to spurs ?so as much as i'd like to see parker at the lane don't think this will happen .

Posted by abe on 06/16/2010

Agree on totally on Parker comment. I think he would be brilliant. West Ham were keen on o Hara. Maybe they can take O Hara and Jenas, and give us Parker. I would be happy with that !

Posted by mike on 06/16/2010

think hudds has that abillity as well

Posted by jason moser on 06/16/2010

i think we should sign huntlaar he a good player and scores plenty of goals aged 26 and at a bargain for 15mil and forlan 25 mil and aged 31 i say no it woulndnt suprise me if harry trys and re-signs dimitar berbatov aged 29 a good at scoreing goals at 15mil price tag ???? or we just bust the war chest and sign drezko or torres well torres valued at 70mil so we priced right out lol drezko priced at 25/30mil and aged 22 i think and plz harry do not sign iquinta he to much and plus he 31 now

Posted by JD on 06/16/2010

PARKER AND CARRICK AND COLE WOULD BE A TERRIFIC BIT OF BUSINESS AND THE ICEING ON THE CAKE WOULD BE A RISKY SIGNING OF HUNTALAAR/BRUNT OF WBA/MCGEADY OF CELTIC .

Posted by sweed spur on 06/16/2010

Agreed, buy Forlan, an intelligent allround fwd. Pavlo and Keano are better suited for the russian and scottish league respectively. Huntelaar will not happen though. On a side note I've heard that spurs signed a swedish talent from Västerås.@ 16 he will not be factor for more than the youth team. COYS.

Posted by Terry M on 06/16/2010

Okay out of the three players u mentioned being linked to Spurs only one of them would prove to be an astute purchase; Huntelaar. Pienaar`s an over-rated, over priced midfielder( we don`t need one) and Forlan for £15-20M at almost 31? Not going to happen. Daniel Levy has shown on a regular basis that he`ll only spend top dollar on players that have sell-on potential( Forlan does not). We do need a top class striker and IMO only these players would be acceptable: Falcao, Aguero, Dzeko, Cavani or Huntelaar. Signing one of these world class strikers could be crucial in our push for honours next year.

Superb article!! well written and informative.

Where can i subscribe?

Posted by Alan on 06/17/2010

We have plenty in midfield now and I don't think Harry Redknapp will look to add more in this department.

Sell Jenas and Bentley will look to be the sensible thing to do now. For those who have watched the WC match between Mexico and S.Africa, there's a certain Spurs player that stood out: Dos Santos. Give him some games and make him an understudy to Lennon. That little guy will rip through any defences on his day.

We need a good CB and a good FWD.

Posted by JW on 06/17/2010

Huntelaar and Dzeko will not happen.
Forlan may be "old" compared to our usual Spurs targets, which of course is a good long term strategy. He does offer much needed experience and leadership and at 31 he still has a few years in him. Since he do not rely heavily on his speed.
Buy Forlan, Parker and a centre back (M.Richards?) to cover for injury spells from Woodgate/King and we´re set. Let Jenas,O´hara, Keane and Pavlo go.

Posted by vincent on 06/17/2010

I think we can offload Jenas, Pavy and Taarbat. I would love to keep Bentley and Dos Santos though.

I think spurs should buy a keeper (Vincent Enyeama is superb for Nigeria), a central defender (Micah Richards is fine I guess) and a forward (Huntelaar is a dream come true).

One final mention that Ninis from Greece is a real bet for the future, this guy has dazzling foorwork.

Posted by anant on 06/19/2010

Spurs should consider signing Nigerian goal keeper. He has been extremely outstanding thru out this world cup. A good asset for spurs goalkeeper

Posted by Justin on 06/19/2010

I'm not certain why everyone wants O'hara to go, he's an amazing talent and he can play anywhere in the midfield and even at LB.

Dos Santos would be wonderful, but there was an option in his loan that he could be signed by the turkish team at the end of the loan so hopefully that doesn't happen.

We really do need to get rid of Jenas and Bentley, because we will have Dos Santos, Lennon, Bale, Kranjcar, and Danny Rose to play the wings and Modric, Palacios, Huddlestone, and Sandro to fill up the middle.

Defoe, Crouch, Pav, and Keane would be a good start but we should probably shed one and bring in someone young with the money we make off of that sale plus the sale of Jenas and Bentley.

Our back 4 seems pretty secure with BAE, King, Dawson, Corluka. Walker, Naughton and Bassong are great back ups. We will need to get someone to replace Woodgate, and we need to get rid of Hutton.

We also need to think about a goalie for the future since Gomes is getting older.

Posted by jcd on 06/20/2010

Yank Spurs fan here. Wish Harry had a spot next to Modric for young Micheal Bradley. At 22 he's been to Heerenveen for a few years and now at Moenchengladbach for a year and a half. He's becoming a box to box defensive midfielder with bite that's not yet reached his potential and has overcome a bit of his yellow card collecting that continues to plague Palacios.

Posted by skotty27 on 06/20/2010

I like the chemistry the team has going for them. Alot of the players share an English background and communicate well. I would love to see Glen Johnson show up, Harry knows him well from portsmith. And Joe Cole's pace would fit the style of the club. If "Pavly" leaves I agree that it might be time to give Dos Santos a shot with the club. One more thing...you can never have enough midfielders!!!

Posted by nyc hotspur on 06/22/2010

I hope Harry is on the lookout for cover at left back. BAE seems to have regressed during the second half of the season, and his performance for Cameroon has been cringe-worthy at times...

Posted by bjt on 06/24/2010

USA Spurs fan. @jcd I don't think Bradley, at his current level of development would be a good purchase for Spurs. That said, Bradley could definitely move to a midtable side (Bolton, BBurn, etc)

We need another young CB to grow alongside/backup Dawson and Bassong. King & Woodgate can't be trusted to be fit, & if Woodgate is forced to retire, then we need 2. GDS could use some playing time, probably best used for us as a super sub on the wing, as he can play either flank.

We definitely need a new striker, & I agree with Colin about Keane. His stock will never be higher than this, let's get our 12mil for him and move on.

Posted by PhiladelphiaHotSpur on 06/24/2010

While I would love to see Forlan here, I agree its a poor business decision at his price and age. Huntleer not a bad 2nd option, but i think he is more interested in the pedigree of a club. I'm really not sure what the answer is up front, but I am in total agreement that they should see Keane and Pavs for legitimate striker. What about Forlan's partner, suazo ?

And, I'm not trying to compare the two, but the more i watch Dos Santos, he really has the attributes of Messi in his game. Very quick and shifty in possession.....Very raw, but patience here will be key just like it was w/ Gareth Bale.

On the Backline, lets be real in the middle......ledley's best days are behind him.....Time for a legitimate reinforcement here.

Definitely sell JJ........Regarding Bentley, if he is fine w/ a reserve role, I would clearly like to keep him. He tends to do very well against the 3rd & 4th tier clubs of the EPL and will be a good replacement for AL w/ our many upcoming fixture.

Posted by MarcoB on 06/25/2010

Well in my opinion Spurs should strenghten there defensive part of the team, with Woodgate and King injured so often and CL looming we cant afford to send a B team if we wanna do well.
In midfield we have some top class players so i think we are ok there but maybe a who could a good link with Crouch and Defoe could be an option. To have players like Cole,Carrick and Parker in your team will always be a plus.I dont think its wise to invest in players with spanish, latin or south american flair as this is not the Spurs style of football we play,so no Forlan please.Huntelaar be a great player to have in your squad and i hope we keep Keane.Anyway people,GO SPURS i say:)

Posted by ZaCOYS on 06/30/2010

Man. City seem to be very willing to give up on Roque Santa Cruz. Doesn't he seem like a pretty good fit up front? Probably be able to get him for pennies on the dollar. And I'm hoping we hang on to Dos Santos as well. He finally seems to be healthy and with a little confidence from the World Cup, he could be a great pace-changer coming off the bench.

Posted by PhillySpur on 06/30/2010

Harry needs to help the defense! CB that spend more time on the table than on the pitch. Look at CB's that are going to augment Dawson. I would also look at a top young forward prospect or keep Keane to bolster the Crouch/Defoe combo.
How about bring in Mrs. Redknapp if she can have a season like Bent had last...we would be challenging for honors!

Posted by mohammed on 07/01/2010

harry needs a winger like luis nani

Posted by ZLillyWhite on 07/03/2010

About Forlan, everyone keeps talking about his age, and while 31 is not ideal, I feel like he would be a perfect fit for a 2-3 season spell, okay so we lose out on resell value but he can come in at his peak for say 2 great seasons, help us in the champions league and maybe win an FA cup, another top 4 finish and maybe more... We def need a CB, M richards or Kjaer would be nice and I would like to see a good left back come in, ekotto is crap and bale is more of a winger although I love bale at leftback vs the weaker teams in the league. If we can get Huntelaar I'll take it, not sold on Cavani... COYS 2010/11 FA cup champs, qtr finals of champions league and 3rd spot in the league

Posted by Luka25 on 07/03/2010

Forget Forlan, Huntelaar and who ever else. Eduardo Da silva would be the perfect striker for Tottenham Hotspur. It would be the perfect combonation with Modric, Kranjcar and Eduardo playing together at Tottenham where they no each other inside out as they played together for so long at international level and at previous club Dinamo Zagreb.Eduardo is one of the best finishers in the game and would suit this Tottenham side perfectly. Now would be a good time to make a bid for him seemingly as he has not been playing much for Arsenal and would be unhappy at the club.Yes i believe the defence needs abit of strengthening Kjear would be a excelent signing, and aso the current German goalkeepe Neuer of German club Shalke04 would do the job in goal. Then we can challenge for honours.

Posted by HAPPY SINNG on 07/05/2010

Forlan and Huntelaar are good forwards but lets not forget Forlan is old Huntelaar will b a waste! I agree with bro ALAN Dos Santos should be given more playing time he would suit as a super sub very well.
For now, Spurs need a good clinical finisher, a good CB, and another creative midfielder to play in the CL. Keane, JJ, Woodgate and Hutton are useless. Harry has got to make money through them and put in a player like Aguero/Suarez, Joe Cole & Arteta, and for now A.Ferdinand might not be the same as his brother but under the right person he can be the best or Kjaer the palermo defender is a good player too. As for keper, Gomez is getting old and Cudicini is way older, sell Cudicini and bring in Victor Enyeama would b the best choice for now all i can say is GO SPURS!!!

Posted by USASpurz on 07/05/2010

Spurs do NOT need another MF. Have Modric, Palacios, Hudd, Sandro coming and O'Hara (plz dont sell!) in the middle. We're better on the wings with Lennon, Bentley, Krancjar, Bale filling in, Dos Santos coming back and Rose coming along nicely, and Modric if needed. Midfield is FIIIIIINE

In back, Cudicini may never come back, so a new reserve keeper. And if the WC is the biggest stage, Fernando Muslera from Uruguay would be a good long term signing (just turned 24).

For defenders, we have BAE and Bale on the left, Corluka and Kaboul (who deputized well) on the right - the 2 Kyles as good prospects. In the middle, with King and Woodgate constantly having trouble, you have Bassong and Kaboul pairing Dawson. 1 more would be good, preferably in the form of Simon Kjaer.

Up front, Defoe and Crouch are good, Pav too, but theyre not the strikers to get us past the group stage. Keanes on his way out too. We need one big signing to marshal us up front. Other than that we're looking good.

Posted by PrinceOfThieves on 07/08/2010

I really think that it will be a mistake to release Bentley..He's one of the rare English wingers that can really perform when on song..Give him more games and i'm sure he'll deliver..Don't forget about dos santos too,see what he's capable of at the world cup..Also,i would love to see kevin prince boateng back at spurs!!!!..

Posted by COYS81 on 07/11/2010

More than anything I think we need a 20 goal a season striker, something none of our current four seem able to do. Defoe, Crouch, Pav and Keane are all decent but none are exceptional and to make a strong run in the CL and hope to hold Man City out of 4th I think we need someone exceptional. Although I personally think we could do better than Huddlestone in midfield, it is otherwise a pretty formidable midfield. Defensively we know we could be stronger more or less across the entire back four, although particularly at right and left back. Anyway hurry up and make a big signing Spurs, I'm getting twitchy!

Posted by yoga on 07/14/2010

i dun understand y gt ppl say need to buy a new keeper.Gomes still 29 and he got the potential to play more 5 or 6 years.Woodgate is the 1st person to clear from the team since he still cant overcomes his injuries problem. Our midfield is abit overload and JJ and O'hara will be offload although both of them were quality player.A LB,like Baine should be introduce to team since bale are more suitable to play in midfield. If not, we will buy J.Cole and let him drive in the left wing.Modric will play midfield together with Palacious and Lennon at right.A changing formation to 4-4-1-1 will be better. We can put dos Santos behind Defoe or Palvuchenko. The only problem is we are no enough height and strength infront of goal.Selling Keane and bring in Fabiano will be the solution.

Posted by LG on 07/18/2010

My main priority would be trying to find a striker who can change a game on his own. Somewhat of a dribbler, with pace and strength who can scare defenders and most importantly, scores vital goals. For that reason only i dont want us to sign huntelaar b/c he's not the quickest and is never going to pick the ball up 40 or 50 yards from goal and do something on his own.(Not that many can however)...and if you want to sign a "pure" goalscorer then Luis Fabiano would be my choice with the added bonus of him being brazilian which could possibly help young sandro settle in quicker when he arrives. For a forward with the attributes i mentioned, i see only one answer, the current flavour of the month Loic Remy of Nice. Forget the comparisons to Henry and you have yourself a diamond in the rough that is just about ready to shine in my opinion. This guy can be dynamic for us even now, and with just a few tweeks and some natural maturation he'll be a world class player within a year or too.

Posted by Syun on 07/19/2010

we need a right back , a left back and a winger to replace Bentley..I suggest Elejaro Elia..the winger from Netherlands..he is still young and very talented

Posted by Shadiq on 07/22/2010

I think Pavyluchenko should have been given more time on the field. 3 months with a good scoring momentum and then he was dumped aside. How is he to show his goal scoring touches if he isn't given the time other strikers were given? He could have well been the Berbatov at Spure.
Considering the number of defensive midfielders including Sandro, I suggest another attacking midfielder. I don't think Jenas or Bentley can hold the responsibilities if one of the CM or right wing is out. I'd say Van Der Vaart would be ideal with his Champions League Experience under his belt.

Posted by HT Yap on 07/26/2010

Rafael van der Vaart has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Premier League clubs ahead of the new season.

Van der Vaart has been to all the top clubs and is better than Joe Cole.

Need world class players in all departments for champion's league

Posted by tengahsen on 07/26/2010

The present Spurs squad is adequate (barring any injuries) to meet any challenges in the EPL or CL.

Not sure about new acquisitions (they are but of the same class already!). Definitely keen to seeing home-grown lads coming through the academy. The available funds could well be invested in this area to groom the likes of Alan Gizean, Jimmy Greaves and other big names of 'ol

Posted by BoroSpur on 07/27/2010

I say spurs do away with Jenas and Bentley get money for cole and Fabiano Also bring in one more CB would make a lot of sense. I would also much rather give pav away then keane, he still brings skill to the table, more then pav i think

Posted by Lo Sconosciuto on 08/25/2010

Good Lord, did someone actually mention Michael Bradley as an option for Spurs? There's probably 20 players in the Championship just as good or better at the same position.
