Going into Saturday's game against Bolton, Spurs had won their last five games at White Hart Lane and over the course of the season had conceded just twelve goals at home - the joint best record in the league, along with Man. Utd. Bolton, by contrast, had not scored in seven of their last nine away games and had effectively nothing to play for, with relegation fears averted and Stoke seven points ahead of them with two games left.

The stage was set, then, for a Spurs victory and it was duly achieved, although not without some nail biting by the fans. Rather like Man. Utd's performance against Sunderland the following day, Spurs were the dominant force but could not secure a second goal which would have settled the nerves. Defoe and Pavlyuchenko failed to impress once again, which must be a concern for the manager going into what is effectively now a "cup final" against Man. City to determine which club will finish in the fourth Champions League spot.

If the attack was largely toothless, fortunately the defence was robust. As unlikely as it would have seemed at the start of the season, King and Dawson now look like a very plausible defensive pairing for England's World Cup campaign. King continues to play - albeit intermittently - despite being unable to train regularly, while the improvement in Dawson's game this season has been marked. Dawson has always been a wholehearted player, but in the past he has relied too much on his heart and too little on his head, which sometimes resulted in poor positional sense and decision making. Alongside King those faults seem to have been eradicated and, on current form, the two of them look a much better bet for England than Terry and Ferdinand. The chances of Capello starting both - or perhaps even either of them - are remote. Terry will no doubt retain his place on his "talismanic" qualities, namely jaw-clenching and fist-shaking. How could a cultured player like Ledley King hope to compete with that?

There was a school of thought that the manager would rest King in order to preserve him for the crunch game at Eastlands. In the event, Redknapp decided to play him to counteract the not inconsiderable physical threat of Davies and Klasnic:

"I had a choice with Ledley whether to play him today and against Burnley, or just Manchester City, but I just felt today's was a match we had to win. Who knows, he might even be fit for Wednesday. If not I have Sebastien Bassong to come in and he's terrific, so it's good that I've got options all over the field again now"

Those options will be tested to the full against a Man. City team who brushed Villa aside at the weekend. For the neutral, it is a fixture to anticipate, savour and enjoy. For the Spurs diehards, however, it is an altogether more nerve-wracking prospect.

Well Said, While playing King against Bolton was a fair decision, I think Redknapp is overestmating Bassong's quality. He is a terrific defender, but against the attacking force The Citizens and their Arab Sugar-Daddys have built up, I just feel much more comfortable with Ledley and Dawson as opposed to Bassong and Dawson.

That being said, I believe our strength will lie in our attack as opposed to Man City's. Bale has been superb, nearly flawless since he's gotten on form, and I believe Aaron not playing much at the Lane is in order to rest him for Wednseday and if he puts in 90 minutes, Toure and Bridge will be in tears by the time we are through. The key is, Defoe, Crouch, Gudjhonsen, Pavy..... ONE of them has to finish... Our only recent goal from a striker was Defoe's penalty v. Chelski. If we get a good performance from at least one of them, finishing the chances SURE to be caused by Bale and Lennon... dare I say it? Champions League =)

You HAVE to at least take Dawson to SA. Ledley I could understand given his knees. That said if I were England manager they would be on the team sheet, but may be bias.

City on Thursday is obviously make or break. Pav does get himself into great positions and think the goals are just minutes away. Defoe on the other hand, doesn't look the player he was earlier in the season. But cant leave him out!

I do believe Palacios should be back. I questioned Harry change for Man U and bringing him back. but with Man City you have to break up that midfield before they get it to their forwards! Have Pal and Modric in the centre with Lennon and Bale!

Good Luck lads... I'll be watching! Have saved my nails for the game!

Another good post Colin.

I'd like to ask though of anyone interested, what they thought the article with Ekotto?

It seems like he just works hard but doesn't have spurs in his heart. He's been a good player for us but I just find it odd that he isn't always aware of who we are playing next.

I'm not sure how to take that. Plus I have seem him have a barn with a few spurs players on field. I hate seeing a disgruntled squad representing.

Thoughts?

Although 1-0 win was good enough, you're right that we should have smashed Bolton with more convictions.

Defoe and Pav, I believe are effective, but for some reasons they didn't get enough balls to shoot. They're both effective in making ways for our midfielders to amend their incapability of finding the nets. Still feeling positive about the 4th CL place.

I don't think of it as nerves but just pure excitement. One game, and a win or a draw sees us through to the Champions League, and a loss drops us to the Europa league.

Let's get three tomorrow and seal the deal!! COYS!!!

A tie does not give us the champions league just to clear that up their ahead on goal difference and their only 1 point behind if we tie and then we lose to burnley and then win against west ham that puts them a point up. The season does not end tomorrow, we still have to play burnley if I've learned anything from watching this team throughout the years there are NO guaranteed wins.

Aside from that I'm extremely nervous, they have had very good form as of late, and our strikers have not. I'd feel much more comfortable if this game were at the Lane.

That being said, the only thing we really need is a striker with consistency, who is also an aerial threat. We can sell Crouch and Gudjohnsen is returning on loan. The rest of the team seems pretty set, their all young and they like to play for 'Arry. Maybe an extra defender in case of injury or Woodgate does not come back. We also have O'hara, Dos Santos, Keane and Hutton all returning after having very good loan spells.

Hey Arsenal, watch where you are!! We are right behind ya!!

And Spurs....don't give away any more penalties if you want that 3rd position. Unthought of even at Christmas; we may enjoy early Christmas now ?!

Fait accompli - business done. The Glory Game returns to Tottenham. Alrighty then, hands up. Honestly, who predicted we'd finish fourth before the season? First time in the top European competition since when. . .1962, I believe the stats say. All the doubters, the Harry Redcrapp out dissenters, etc. — the lot of you can, well you know what you can do. We are Tottenham from the Lane. Here's a link to the lads & gals from the Los Angeles Spurs Supporters club at the Fox & Hounds in the Valley, yep that Valley, like Valley girl. COYS!

JAMES, I THINK THAT EKOTTO PREPARES HIMSELF FOR ALL GAMES THAT WAY. IF YOU DONT KNOW WHOM YOU ARE PLAYING, YOU DONT HAVE PRECONCEIVED IDEAS ABOUT PLAYING AGAINST ANY PARTICULAR PLAYER. IF HE KNEW WE WERE PLAYING REAL MADRID ON SATURDAY, ALL HE WILL THINK ABOUT IS CAN I STOP RINALDO. HE WILL WAY HOW GOOD RINALDO IS AGAINST OTHER DEFENDERS AND COMPARE THEM WITH HIMSELF AND MAYBE LOSE CONFIDENCE.

We have reached the CL now for the third spot. If Fulham were not in the Europa Final maybe we had a chance but you never know
