"I'm bitterly disappointed. … I thought they played fantastic, and we really were a shadow of ourselves ... It's been a great season and I've been delighted with the performances of the players all season, but you always want to win, that's the disappointment."

While Sunday's capitulation at Burnley was a surprise, Harry Redknapp was at least able to put the defeat in perspective. Just over a year and a half ago, the manager took over a team mired in the relegation zone. In the penultimate game of this season at Eastlands, Spurs secured Champions League qualification for the first time on the back of a great performance against a Man. City side chasing the same prize. Redknapp deserves a huge amount of credit, a fact that has already been recognized in his being crowned Barclay's Manager of the Season. The statistics make impressive reading: a top four finish for the first time since 1989/90; the most wins by the team since the inception of the Premier League; and a club record haul of 70 Premier League points.

Raw numbers alone, however, are inadequate to describe the manner in which success was achieved. The crunch match against Man. City exemplified the qualities that the team as a whole and key players in particular have displayed this season - the skill of Gomes in goal; the consistency of King and Dawson at the heart of the defence; the pace of Bale and the intelligence of Modric in midfield; and the endeavor of Crouch up front.

Spurs also have players due to return from injury or from loan spells at other clubs, including Kranjcar, Corluka, Cudicini, Hutton, O'Hara, Keane and - perhaps most significantly of all - Jonathan Woodgate. Woodgate is currently in Australia, having failed to find a solution to his ongoing injury problems in the USA. Redknapp has noted that "he is at a very low point in his life" and speculation has even arisen that Woodgate's playing days might be over. If that were to be the case, it would be a tragedy for a player who possesses such talent and who is such a key member of the Tottenham squad.

The manager has already expressed his satisfaction with the personnel at his disposal, but the possibility of substantial income through the Champions League will presumably lead to one or two new faces at White Hart Lane during the summer. The services of the Brazilian midfielder, Sandro, have already been secured and Spurs have been linked with Joe Cole, Micah Richards and Yossi Benayoun. It also did not go unnoticed how warmly City's Craig Bellamy congratulated Redknapp after his team's defeat. Players of this caliber would be welcome additions, since getting to the group stages of the Champions League involves a qualifying round that could include the likes of Sevilla, Sampdoria, Werder Bremen or Martin Jol's Ajax. A tricky prospect perhaps, but one for which the Spurs fans can hardly wait.

The future's lilywhite. . .in fact, the future's so bright I gotta wear shades. Two month hiatus — while our boys help England win the World Cup, well, this is the silly season, lol — and then back at it again in August. What a great season from beginning to end. The Glory Game is returning to White Hart Lane!

The likes of Sevilla, Sampdoria, Werder Bremen or Martin Jol's Ajax will dread playing against Spurs.

I'm sorry but Craig Bellamy is a nasty piece of mercenary who is best left in manchester. Football talent he may have, but surely you can find better players who will come without a Manchester City price tag and additionally arent dirtbags...?

Spurs have some of the best wingers in the league anyway.

Colin, do you have any areas you think need reinforcement? Or any players who are likely to be sold?

Posted by Spurzgrrl on 05/11/2010

I really hope we don't get Bellamy. The man may have some talent - I find it a bit dubious to say so, at the level we're talking about - but his effect on the squads he plays for tends to be all about disunity and squabbling. We already have an ego-driven striker or two who don't like to work with their teammates (*cough*Defoe*cough*Keane*cough*), I can't see us needing another one. Let's find someone with a good attitude, who can be with us for a few years.

With the FA Cup devastation vs Portsmouth, I was awfully nervous about our CL hopes. But that City game was epic......The best thing about this squad, they really have minimal gaps. Both wings are set, Modric at CAM , Defoe and Crouch up front and the backline is very strong. And, last but not least, Gomes has been a revelation between the posts.

The big question for next year - what do w/ Huddlestone and Palacios ? I'm thinking that the CDM spot can be dictated by the opponent - vs the big guns and speed, use Palacios. vs the lower end teams, go w/ Huddlestone. You could see how useful huddlestone was vs Bolton, but somewhat of a liability vs the quicker City team..

Either way, the future is bright......Lastly, what about bringing berbatov back and line him up w/ Defoe ? Crouch perfect on the bench and can start many of the games when we're playing twice in one week. I think it makes sense.....

And, w/ my claim waaaaaaaay back when calling out that Bale was clearly playing out of position at LB and had much better skills for LW, he took way to long for the club to realize it. I'm thinking it probably cost us a 5 or so points in the process. Either way, Bale at LW and Lennon at RW.........might be the best wingo combo in the EPL. GS

Big big ups to 'Arry! Would have loved to close out the season with a win, but we have a lot to celebrate, cause it was a great season. Fourth is the new first :)
Be interesting to see who Spurs are eyeballing to add to the squad. for next season.
COYS

I just started to follow the EPL this year and I am so glad I chose Spurs as my team. What a year it was. Fantastic football and a 4th place finish! I am so excited for next season! COYS!

What a great achievement it is that we got 4th. I realise it is 4th and people shouldn't aim to be 4th best at anything. BUT it is a step in the right direction, and hope that we progress well in the CL!

Where we we improve the squad? Very good question GK is one for me... I suppose Cudacini will be fit again. LB maybe. A star striker in my opinion is needed... Torres anyone!?!?

Lets not forget that Dos Santos is coming back... we have Bostock too (a real talent). Hopefully we can play the kids in the domestic cups!

Looks good for Spurs. COYS!!!!

Congrats to Harry and all his men! What tremendous mettle they show to wrap up the CL spot at ManCity. Then again, if we had won THOSE matches against Hull and Wolves (we lost both against Wolves) ....

I am a bit worry about the centre of defence. Woodgate doesn't seem he would make it back to the level he was and King may not be up to the grind of so many matches. Dawson will have much on his hands. Attack is the same. I don't really fancy Defoe - did you read the article about him only firing against weak teams? How I wish we still have Lineker or Klinsmann to lead the line....

Overall solid team but many lack Euro experience and that's what worries me next season.

Very proud of the boys getting that 4th spot after one of the most impressive months in the clubs history (wins vs Chelsea, Arsenal and City). If Woodgate doesn't come back we need cover there, another defensive midfielder in the event that Palacios misses games again would be nice. Gotta agree that we could do with a World class striker the convert more of the great ball our midfielders provide. It's going to be an exciting 2010 season COYS!!

im very glad spurs got through.iv been following the team right from 1976(and far from uk--im in mauritius, a small island), and it really brings joy to get this performance from our team
now, i think, the major objective is to set the team stroll on consistency;this is one of our major drawback
to be delighted, we all are..
but the coming season is going to unveil whether we are of big team materials or only once in a blue moon performers.
for this, we need players who can keep their concentration at 95% or more for every match, players who have the urgent need and desire to win every match and players who do not think light of losing even 1 point in a match.
so talent should be there, thats definitive, but its not enough.
coupled with this,is combativity, consistency, concentration, ambitions and aspirations, belief in self and high expectations, commitment and seriousness, capability of raising up from bad situations like a phoenix from its ashes and overall a good team play
