So it's not rocket science after all. With Spurs holding a narrow 1-0 lead over Wigan and unable to press home their advantage on a quagmire of a pitch, Harry Redknapp brought on Luka Modric and Roman Pavlyuchenko for the closing stages. The result? Two goals for Pavlyuchenko, the first of them set up beautifully by Modric, who himself hit the post.
Redknapp has come under some heavy criticism in recent weeks - not least here - for some strange team selections and his unwillingness to use his substitutes. On this occasion, he got it spot on.

Right from his introduction, Modric mastered the appalling surface and ran the show. No doubt the Croatian is still working his way back to full capacity following his long spell out through injury. Yet, as his cameo against Wigan showed once again, the physical rigours of the Premier League seemingly hold no fears for a player of such slight build and sublime touch. Spurs are fortunate indeed to have someone with his guile, technique and temperament in their ranks.
The temperament of the other substitute who got on has been called into question, yet Pavlyuchenko answered his critics in the best possible fashion. Even then, his manager seemed unable to praise the Russian unequivocally:
"I've always said he has got great ability. When he wants to work and give everything, he's a top quality player."
It's obviously hard to know what is going on behind the scenes at Tottenham. Even Jermain Defoe, while describing Pavlyuchenko as a "fantastic lad", prefaced his remark by saying that "it's important to stay professional". Pavlyuchenko has not helped his cause with some of own pronouncements, most recently that "sometimes I have a feeling that Redknapp jeers at me." In the end, though, it's hard not to feel sympathy for the striker. Despite having played only a matter of minutes in the league this season, he is hugely popular with the fans. Undoubtedly this popularity is due in large measure to their perceived injustice of the situation.
The fans at the DW Stadium may have been surprised that it was Defoe rather than Crouch who made way for Pavlyuchenko, but again this was a good piece of management. Defoe had scored the opener but he was on a yellow card and potentially heading for a red one. Perhaps it was simply the fact that his goal was blatantly offside that led to his low-key celebration, but he seemed out of sorts all afternoon. That being said, if Pavlyuchenko is to get a run in the side - as he now surely must - it will more likely be at the expense of Peter Crouch, who has failed to find the net in his last seven appearances.
Spurs have been accused of lumping the ball high in the air to Crouch when they find themselves facing sides that prove difficult to break down. That accusation was made most recently by their FA Cup opponents, Bolton, themselves hardly exponents of the beautiful game.
Now that fourth place has been attained once again, keeping it will demand that Spurs play to their full potential, especially since the next two league fixtures are against Everton and Man City. The cup replay and those two Premier League games will go a long way towards shaping the course of Tottenham Hotspur's season.

I fail to agree that Harry got it "spot on" with his substitutes. Modric and Pav should have been started. He made a poor call sitting them. When he finally subs them in and they do what they could have done all game he is considered a tactician. I had faith in Harry but over the passed couple months he has lost it for me. Spurs have a fortune in class, but many of our players don't even get a chance. Look at Bale, he is a genius on the wing back, but wouldn't have got a chance if not for injury to Asoukotto. Same with Bently. And letting Gio go is bullocks! At the start of the season we were winning every game with Keano and Defoe up front, but then suddenly we prefer Crouch and we hardly score. What is wrong with Harry? His favoritism makes me sick.

Pav's brace at the week-end comes as a welcome relief to our recent goal drought. It also underlines what most of you have been calling for, and that is for the gaffer to give Pav a chance to prove himself, albeit for 10min only.
Again guys, don't forget that Harry is manager and he makes the call. He is exposed to these players every day of his life so he is well aware of their work ethic, application at training, attitude towards the club, etc etc...
I am sure Harry recognizes Pav's talent, but where there is smoke there is fire. I don't think the gaffer will purposefully leave out a player if he is a model member of the squad and does things by the book.
I think Pav is the architect of his own misery. He has proven that he has the talent. He must just knuckle down and do what his manager expects of him.
The Crouch-Defoe partnership has gone off the boil. Crouch has gone from being effective to just another player. Pav, here's your chance!Take it!

As noteworthy as Pav's 2 cool left-footed finishes (the first while falling down as he had a defender all over him) was the fact that Crouch completely bottled a left-footed finish when he was clean through on goal. I think even Harry's missus could have tucked that one away.
It's time to start Pav & Defoe up front, IF ONLY for a run of 2-3 games, and have Crouch come off the bench as an impact sub that Spurs can toss on if they just can't break a team down with the passing game. I like Crouchinho as much as anyone, but his knock-downs from long balls haven't been leading to anything as of late, and he has really not been getting good headers directed goalward in recent matches...
I am not so short-sighted as to say that Pav should be an automatic starter based on one appearance, but GIVE PAV A CHANCE!!

crouch is past his sale by date, he should play Defoe and Pav up front on Wenesday

Krancar on the LW...modric in the Middle....Huddlestone 1st sub. So obvious...
Crouch had a nice start to the season , but has hit the wall. Give Pavs some starts w/ Defoe.....really, what do u have to lose ?? They weren't scoring anyway...
And, once A&E gets healthy.....I want GBale on the LW.......he is ready.

Both Modric and Pav should start Wednesday. Pav brings an energy to this team that I just don't feel when Crouch is on the pitch or even when Keane was there.

I've never been a real fan of Pav - we wanted Arshavin, couldn't get him so we settled for the next best russian I guess. That's not to say he hasn't had is moments, but I'm very curious as to what his attitude is like in training, because Harry is not stupid.
Pawning Robbie off to Celtic was the right thing to do - he wasn't able to regain his pre-Liverpool form and so far it looks as if playing for his boyhood team has revitalized him somewhat.
All that being said, I think Pav deserves a chance. Offensively we've been in a slump and something different needs to happen - Pav is hungry, maybe a little humbled and should get the next few starts. If we're going to keep him until the summer, let's see what he's got - if not - sell him, if so - he'll be a happier player having started most of the second half of the season.

Totally agree with some above, crouch needs to be the sub brought in for a last ditch effort. Modric is so explosive and can make things happen - don't understand not getting him more minutes.

Finally we score some goals.....
With Bolton coming up I concur that this is an excellent opportunity to use Pav instead of Crouch and try to establishing a less direct style against a team that we know is going to more or less park the bus, especially at the Lane. Here is what the lineup should look like in my opinion:
-------------Gomes---------------
-Corluka--Dawson---Bassong--Bale-
-Bentley--Palacios--Modric--Kranjcar
--------Pav------------Defoe-------
I know its early, but looking forward to this summer hopefully we can bring in an ace striker assuming Crouch still cannot find the net and Pav continues his lack of professionalism. A good CM (Sandro please!) would also be great so we could make sure that Jenas never steps on the field in a Spurs shirt again. A less injury prone CB would be nice. With those three pieces we will have a team that can really challenge the best in the EPL.

Harry did make the right call. It's a stretch to assume they would have been great from the beginning, especially not having played recently. All we can go onis reality, not speculation, and in reality, Modric and Pav were great as subs.
I would like to see Pav play a lot more, but that would render Crouch a substitute, where he is awful. He has no pace, no dynamism, no chance to turn a game that an ideal substitute has. If he can't start, he can't play.
As for his attitude, Harry has to grow up. It would be nice for Pav to be a perfect team mate and leader, but even if he is a lowlife, he is one of the two best forwards on the team. Harry can try to make an example out of him, but why cut off your nose to spite your face? They have had trouble scoring, all the while a proven scorer is sitting on the end of the bench. Grow up, Harry.

i am a follower of spurs for sometime now and i must admit that playing crouch has led spurs to play long balls whch is not their game at all. i watched the Villa game and was dissapointed .spurs is a well known passing side and have been 'succesfull' in recent years playin that style. i think HR has his players . look at all players whom he brought with from Portsmouth. i honestly dont think crouch is better that pAv and a fit modric is an automatic selection.
one thing i am doubting is whether HR is the man to take Spurs to the next level . he made spurs survive relegation but will he make spurs a champions league team ? lets wait and see.
there was a serious goal drought in the past games and still no real changes in th team .

Although Modric came off the bench to weave his magic, I am sure Harry coonsidered the picth VS the playing style of a Modric.
Also, don't forget that such a disgraceful field would not have helped Modric's rehabilitation from injury, so maybe it was just precautionary not to play him the full 90min.
As for Tom's comments about Harry having to grow up. "Tom, when, as a manager, you are dealing with a group of players, you HAVE to assert yourself and show the group where the lines of authority lies." Don't forget Harry's dealing with a bunch of wealthy pre-madonna's. Go Harry!
Lastly, Harry's no fool. He will assess the opposition and pick his first XI based on the type of game he envisages given the playing style of the opposition.
To suggest that Harry got it wrong is a laugh. He fielded an XI that got a goal, protected the lead, then brought on 2 subs who changed the face of the game.
Come on guys! A win; a clean sheet away from home! What more do u want?

How about having Pav and Gudjohnsen as the forward pairing instead? I think having 2 large forwards is better than a little and large combo.
Crouch should be dropped for now as he's off form at the moment.

I'm fully agree all the action taken by Harry. He is working well for let Robbie out who is over the peak even less 30 years old.
Just worry about on the left side. Bale is good for attack, but he is very weak for defends. So, put Modric on the left is very risky now. Hope A&E get healthy soon.....

Good to see i'm not the only one sometimes left baffled by Harry's selections. Couldn't understand the lack of opportunities for dos Santos, and now sticking with Crouch seems insane. Modric in the middle would give us a more creative element, as Hud's attacking form has dipped.
I am pleased to say that i think we've got it near enough nailed at the back..with Bale turning in some good performances and Assou-ekotto likely to apply pressure on his return.

What I noticed was that Pav came on for Defoe. They are both goal poachers who aren't noted for running around or getting assists. Would you start Pav ahead of Defoe?
Modric looked back to his best against Wigan but he had been playing poorly since returning from injury. I'm not surprised he didn't start.
Bale looks like a left-winger because he is great going forward but he often gets confused on defense.

Harry should start Pav more regularly and he should have done this long2 ago. Crouch is lacking at the moment, every ball he heads no connectivity, always fail to reach Defoe. Harry don't always favour the England players, give the others an opportunity, they're have all the qualities to be in your squad. League Cup is gone, CL spot in danger(i don't think Spurs can make) & the only hope is FA Cup. Let see how far Harry can take us.

Well then! Pav does it again. I only have one small concern, For most the 90 minutes Pav was ghosting around; his 1st touch was questionable (signs of rustiness). His decision-making was 2nd grade. Let's hope that a bit of game time can get him into his stride.
Harry has remarked that he has seen a change in Pav's attitude and that the player wants to dig in and get on with it. Great!
I read that Defoe's substitution was forced due to injury. Gudjohnson looks slow, heavy and pedestrian-like. I can't see him as a sure starter. Quite frankly, I'd rather see one or two of our youngsters get bled in rather than an expensive resource trying to resurrect his career. For now, here's hoping Gudjohnsen can deliver when called upon.
Everton, watch out! We're coming!

Well done to Pav, but really we only got him so that Arshavin would have another Russian to talk too, and make the transition to English football more easily. When he went to the Ars@e, Pav was left out in the cold.

Phew! Great win boys.
Consider this; 1. Our goalie is completely off-form on the day 2. We lose a pivotal player in the Hud 3. Defoe's suffering a brief loss of touch...
All this and we still pull off a win! Great going Harry! I must admit I was quietly nervous when Kaboul came on for the Hud, but given what I saw, it probably made sense (sitting in front of the back four and offering protection), and allowing Wilson to advance further up field.
Crouchy definately seemed to have lost something. He just looked so clumsy and so out of sorts.
Modric seems to back to his glittering best, and again it was proven that Kranjaer is worth his weight in gold.
Dawson continues to lead with great presence and has become a collosal figure in our stable defense.
Bale...well...Bale is just proving what all the fuss was about when we signed him. Now I can see why Sir Alex rated him so highly and also wanted to sign him.
It's looking good boys! Man City, we're waiting!

I agree completely with Wylie Redmond. Redknapp must be sacked no matter what. Let us all pray that we get a good coach and Pavl stays.
