After an hour's play at the Reebok Stadium, the Spurs fans could have been forgiven for thinking that this season was going to be one of disappointment.

Following an abysmal league defeat at Molineux in midweek, Spurs were facing a Bolton side that totally dominated the first half of this fifth round FA Cup tie and in the second half, with Spurs hitting the bar twice in quick succession, looked like they might then ride their luck to a place in the quarter-finals.

Thankfully Defoe’s goal on 61 minutes preserved Harry Redknapp's dream of lifting the cup once again. Spurs could and should have finished the game off, but for Huddlestone’s poorly taken penalty.

The midfielder - who put in yet another weak performance - did not inspire confidence as he faced Jaaskelainen. Instead of using the power he undoubtedly possesses, he opted instead for a stuttering run-up followed by a poorly placed shot. The decision to use Huddlestone as the penalty taker - rather than, say, Modric or Kranjcar - is a questionable one, but nothing compared to some of the manager's decisions for the league game at Wolves.

Two months ago, after defeat in the reverse fixture, this column noted that:

"Following on from Stoke's victory in October, another physical, workmanlike team has left White Hart Lane with all three points by virtue of greater muscle, organization and desire."

Given that scenario, Redknapp's selections were truly bizarre. In a game where Palacios unquestionably would have been a key player for Spurs, he was named as one of the substitutes, with Jenas starting instead. It took the manager until half time to recognize the folly of that decision, by which time Wolves had already scored. That goal resulted from a cross by Matt Jarvis, given too much room by Younes Kaboul. Kaboul is inept enough in his normal position of centre-half, but on this occasion he was playing at full-back, while two recognized full-backs - Corluka and Walker - warmed the bench.

Redknapp would no doubt make the argument that he was resting players for the cup-tie but, had Bolton been able to maintain the head of steam they built up in the first half, his plan could have backfired spectacularly. As it is, the prospect of a top-four finish is looking increasingly remote and, if Bolton can be overcome in the replay, a tricky trip to Craven Cottage awaits.

As far as team selection is concerned, it seems apparent that Roman Pavlyuchenko is never going to get a game, no matter what he does. Pavlyuchenko was an unused sub in both matches, despite the manager's concerns earlier in the week about Jermain Defoe's overall contribution, and despite the fact that Spurs have now scored a grand total of three league goals in 2010. Redknapp bemoaned that "suddenly it's dried up a bit … we haven't scored enough goals." Perhaps giving an opportunity to a Russian international striker might represent one solution.

Both Wolves and Bolton started their games against Spurs in the relegation zone. If teams like these cannot be overcome - and overcome comfortably - then Spurs can forget about playing in the Champions League next season.

Even during those early heady days, 5-1 and 9-1 wins, any objective Spurs fan would've said that we are still a few floors short of the penthouse. . work on it during the summer but a very good young squad with some upcoming stars in Lennon, Bale, Defoe, Gomes, etc. Okay, so after being stymied by weekly park the bus defenses, we're playing scared, Huddlestone was scared taking that PK, scared to lose, scared about the verbal and fan onslaught that would've come. But, in the bigger picture, it's mid-Feb, one point off Pool, one game away from FA quarters. What's not to like. And, man, we've seen some of the Glory Game this season. . .bring it on!

Wow! I can't believe that we're disentegrating after such a promising start to the season. I've been a huge fan of Harry's but I must admit I am starting to feel that he has lost the plot. I was critical of the rest of you who has been criticising Harry, but now i am starting to feel the same. How in heaven's name can Harry justify the radical changes at Wolves? I don't understand! Secondly, why are we persisting with a strike force that has only yielded 3 goals this year? I am hoping this feeling's just a phase and that Harry will restore some confidence and get us back to winning ways!

This week, most of the lads seems a spent force.

Posted by Mark on 02/16/2010

Absolutely agree Colin. Week in and week out we (the fans) are making comments that he favours certain personnel. And although I am a fan of Huddlestone, a whole season may be too much for one who hardly saw a shot last year.
That said Harry is not one who easily making changes (even during matches!). I have made the statement before and I'll say again. Harry has done a great job for Spurs and took us from bottom, to practically Europe (great job). But to take us to Champions League, and to do consistently, is a different ball game! I think we may find ourselves in this position this time next year! Why on earth do you buy Kaboul back (when I thanked the stars when he left). Playing Crouch and Defoe, teams know the plan!
Try Pav and Defoe. Kranc, Bentley, Palacios and modric in Mid with those 2 would be more formidable. Defence has been good, just lack up from.
Bring on the next game, and hope we can put a string of game together.
COYS!

I've stopped trying to understand why Harry does some of the things that he does. He is a refreshing change from Ramos in that we went from a manager who said NOTHING to one who is a walking quote machine, but it is clear to all who observe him that 'Appy 'Arry has an ego as wide as the river Thames, and he gets off to a certain degree on having the final say in all matters.

His greatest contributions so far during his time at Spurs have come from bringing back Defoe, bringing in Palacios and Kranjcar in the transfer market, bringing Gareth Bale back in from the wilderness (although that was admittedly only brought about by Assou-Ekotto's injury), and getting the most out of Lennon.

However, 'Arry's failure to find a consistent central midfield pairing that works has been his biggest downfall this year. Since Kranjcar has shown such immaculate form out left, once everyone is healthy I would desperately love to see Kranjcar left, Lennon on the right, and Modric pulling the strings

Couldn't agree more. The team selections have been perplexing. I understand the FA Cup is important, but certainly winning games and finishing in a Champions League spot is more so.

JJ is so far inferior to the other options on the bench. Personally, I'd prefer to see a midfield with Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar (one on left and one attacking), Palacios, and Lennon (Bentley until Lennon is back from injury). Perhaps Huddlestone/Palacios in the center of the pitch give the team a little more defensive backbone, but right now the team needs goals and creativity which would be better achieved by partnering Palacios with one of the Croatians.

I don't begrudge 'Arry the opportunity to give Gudjohnsen a run out, but I would also agree that Pavlyuchenko deserves a shot.

As a spurs fan I have to admit (frustrating as it is) that this article is spot on. I am a big fan of HR I really am, but it does bother me that selection and tactics have let us down, two important aspects of being a 'top top' manager. I am not calling for any changes and I will support the whole team until the end. This is something a few from 'vital spurs' website should do!!

Posted by PhiladelphiaHotspur on 02/16/2010

Colin - Dead on assessment. I'm seriously beginning to question Harry and his ability to field a team that gives us the greatest opportunity at 3 points.

We lose to the Wolves at the lane......3 points is an absolute must w/ Pool and City breathing down our necks. And he goes w/ JJ and Huddlestone in the middle and our new arrival up front ? what on earth was he thinking ? While I'm would love to take the FACup, how is that working for Portsmouth these days ?? Really, top4 should be the clear priority and that starting 11 @ the Wolves was woefully wrong for that big of a game.

Back to pretender status........Will it ever end ??

PS.....Yo Harry....you sold Keane. Its clearly time to give Pavs a chance up front. Wake up, please

Embarrassing. That is they only word to describe the majority of recent personnel moves and team performance. We cannot score, cannot control the ball, cannot overcome even the most basically organized side. When we fail to get a spot even in the Europa league at the end of the season I hope that big changes are made. We simply do not have the needed quality of players to be a champions league side.

Posted by syun on 02/16/2010

totally agree..I think Redknapp is thinking that we have the squad to secure champions league spot and winning FA cup this season..that is soooo wrong..we are not good enough to win both..we should focus more on securing the 4th spot as early ss possible bcoz the competition is very..very tough.Having said that,I am willing to bet that he will do it, this 'out of this world', team @ penalty taker selection again and we will not be in the champions league next season bcoz of it.:(

Posted by Zack on 02/16/2010

Well it's hard to be super critical of Harry given he took Spurs from fighting relegation to fighting for Champions League in the span of a few months. BUT...Since the break Spurs have gone from a team worthy of CL to one not fit for the Europa League. A lot of that is managerial, I'm afraid. I'm not looking for a change of manager, but obviously there needs to be a fresh approach. Losing to Wolverhampton was a disgrace, and then just barely drawing Bolton after that loss shows there needs to be a serious look given at the plan here - because it's not working! This week they're at Wigan - 3 points against this team is vital, if we're to have any chance of competing for fourth.

Posted by dan on 02/16/2010

its not over if harry wises up we can still qualify for champions league, we have the quality but harry needs to put his preferences aside and pick pav who is a world class striker. i feel bad for him but his confidence must be shot. if we give him a run against any of the big four teams i guarantee he will put in a top class performance

Posted by dazza on 02/16/2010

i think redknapp is lost in his own football world ,he talks constantly about everything & everyone,he actually believes he`s on the same par as wenger ,ferguson, mourinho, & ancellotti etc etc & other great managers ,but the truth is he aint,i mean how much does he do for spurs & how does he do for himself ,respect the job he`s done ,but with odd signings ,suicidal tactics & strange team selections when do we say thanks ¬arry but no thanks mate we have more ambition than you can give us

Posted by Patrick on 02/16/2010

Colin -- Spot On! Couldn't agree more, which leaves us in a bit of a sad state. At least when we lost to Wolves at the Lane, the lads dominated possession and showed a bit of quality, unlike Wednesday. Well done, Colin, keep it up. Call for Pavs!

Posted by janitorfrommars on 02/16/2010

modric didn't take the penalty because he was already substituted... for all we know he's the designated taker (unlikely). in any case, bale would probably be the best of the available options

Posted by DRYB on 02/16/2010

Out of all of this things I just don't get why would Redknapp not put Roman Pavlyuchenko in the game. I think it's really dumb and foolish of him.

Posted by Mat on 02/16/2010

Wow, so many fair-weather supporters of Harry! Managers, just like players, go in and out of form. While there have been perplexing decisions made there are not many of us that have the courage to say so before the game. We wait until after, when we can all be 'Monday Morning Quarterbacks'.
We'll get there, The Champions League is beckoning. come on you Spurs!

Posted by Ben on 02/17/2010

Agreed that the selection at Wolves was a bit funky but at the same time even a slightly weakened line up certainly should not have lost. I agree with Shoreman that Harry should not be faulted for giving Gudjohnsen a run in the side and I hope he gives him several more chances to gel with his new team.
While Crouch has performed extremely well at times this season I don't think his play merits a consistent first team spot. Having him as an option on the bench capable of switching up the style of play towards the end of a match might best serve the team. Hopefully Pav and Gud will have some more shots at a starting position.
I also think its a bit harsh to put any blame on Harry for selecting Huddlestone as the penalty taker, I didn't think there was any doubt he would pound it into the back of the net.
Hopefully Lennon will be back soon as Spurs seem to be grasping for answers without him.

Posted by Mark Ross on 02/17/2010

Phew! I've read all the comments posted. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize that Harry's taking tons of abuse here. Yes, I too have been critical of him,(out of frustration no doubt) but on reading the comment made by "Mat" I have had a bit of a re-think.

Let's rally behind Harry and support his cause. I coach an amateur team here in our local football league, and sometimes, based on performance and commitment shown during training, as a coach one tends to want to give others a run based on this. One also wants to freshen things up and try different combinations.

Guys, Harry need support. Spurs need support. Let's stop the manager abuse and show the man some love!

Remember when Sir Alex was so heavily criticized for his lone-striker formation when ManUre played in Europe? Well, he went on to win the competition and proved his critics wrong.

Come on !! If we qualify for Europa we'd be much improved from last season! We are not ready for CL footy.

COYS!!!!

'Arry has done a good job since he came to Spurs, but this was a tough week for the gaffer.
At least Defoe got one in the net at The Reebok- can you imagine the tone of this peice had we actually lost on Sunday.
Spurs away record at Bolton does not inspire confidence.
As far as the Champions League is concerned- this one's going down to the last week of the season!
COYS!!!!!!!!!!!

Huddlestone.... I keep hearing commentators saying how he has an evil shot on him. I watch him belt the ball 50 feet over the post at least 4 times per game. Wasn't that long ago I saw his strike go out for a thow in. I would have bet my entire salary on Hudds missing.

If a manager cannot trust his center forwards to score from the penalty spot he needs to replace both.

Next time I rate give the penalty to Gomez. At least he tries his best EVERY game and genuinely seems to love playing for Spurs.

Posted by Stibe on 02/17/2010

HR is a mid-team manager. Hasn´t got the clue about what make league-winning teams. What is his best league result? How many times has he led teams in Europe? HR is really good in helping bottom teams to raise above the relegation zone - but making really good teams? Name one.....

Posted by Mikey C. on 02/17/2010

Good ol Arry has let the early season success go to his head fellas. This is the point of the season where a manager earns his paycheck and as much as i like what he's done, he's really hurting our chances at CL qualification and an FA cup triumph. His team selections have been downright abysmal lately and Jenas should only play now if someone is hurt or if we need a boost late on. He was responsible for the Wolves goal and couldnt take the only chance he's had for the last month when all he had to do was head down a flick and round the keeper and he managed to lose the ball with a open net to shoot at. I love Modric but sticking him out wide absolutely makes him less effective. Niko has by far been our best wide player and should be starting every single match wide left. Modric needs to be in the middle. Give Pav a run for goodness sakes, Crouch and Defoe have become so predictable that mediocre teams can now easily defend us and we struggle for long stretches offensively.

Posted by nizam on 02/17/2010

just let Pavlyuchenko go...he's a top quality player but got his talent wasted on the bench...

Posted by A Yank on 02/17/2010

With regards to penalty taking, any player on the field should be able to put the ball in the net from the spot. The fact that our best goal scorer has missed one I think exemplifies a very important thing that is wrong with our side. Our players and manager lack the mental resolve to be a top club.

This season is even more difficult then last. At least last season they didn't pretend to be capable of challenging for a top spot...

Posted by Patrick on 02/17/2010

Ben--I agree with all of your thoughts whole-heartedly, especially on Crouchy. Also, Huds has a rocket but just didn't do his thing, obviously lacking a bit of confidence in his new role at the spot. Leave the stutter steps to Keano. Come On You Spurs!!!

Posted by kuma87 on 02/18/2010

Pav is injured no?

Posted by Patrick Harveyc on 02/20/2010

The solution is simple - stop trying to build the entire season around Peter Crouch. Sure Crouch is useful on occassion but all I am seeing now is a ball kicked up in the air and a team looking for a knock down. It's easy to defend against if that is every move. Then the ball comes loose in midfield and once again Spurs are under pressure against well organised teams. Use Crouch sometimes, when opposing defenses are small or weak in the air, but not every game, every move. It is a totally insane way of playing. Spurs need to mix it up, use players tactically, vary the play...... we have the players so why not use them.
