While it has hardly been goodwill to all men off the field, at least there have been glad tidings on it. A very good win against Man. City was followed in short order by victory at Ewood Park, a ground where Spurs have not enjoyed much success in recent years. And while Blackburn are admittedly a mediocre side, they had not lost at home this season since being beaten by Man. City on the opening day. As Harry Redknapp admitted, the game was not the most attractive to watch, but a second consecutive clean sheet and a berth just outside the top four will leave manager, players and fans alike enjoying the holiday spirit.

Enjoyment of spirits of a different kind was undoubtedly on Redknapp's mind when he reacted angrily to the squad's unsanctioned party in Dublin. Unsurprisingly, given the venue, the finger of suspicion fell on Robbie Keane as the ringleader, initially leading to rumors that he would be stripped of the captaincy. With Keane on the bench for the last two games, Spurs have looked a more effective side and so his bad judgment - if indeed that was the case - appeared to present his manager with a golden opportunity to remove the embarrassment of the captain wearing a sub's jersey. Or, conversely, it would lessen the pressure on Redknapp to give Keane token appearances in the starting line-up. Harry should have grasped this Christmas present with both hands, but reports seem to be suggesting that he has not. Perhaps instead he is already thinking about offloading the Irishman in the January sales.

Michael Dawson was once again given the armband on Saturday and performed well in a solid back-line, with Gomes and Bassong outstanding. Crouch also impressed, taking his second goal in particular with cool command. The team was unchanged from the one that so confidently overcame Man. City in midweek and there is a growing sense that Spurs can mount a realistic challenge for a top four spot - especially if poor performances against lesser Premier League sides like Stoke and Wolves can be eliminated. The manager was accurate in his summation of Saturday's display:

"It was not a pretty game but one Tottenham may have lost in the past. It was a great result for us. It was a tough match but we have collected three points and kept a clean sheet away from home. I have to be pleased with that."

Another tough match looms against a rampant Fulham, who themselves are bidding for a place in the upper reaches of the table. A Boxing Day derby against a team featuring the likes of Dempsey, Gera and Duff is something to look forward to. Let's hope for a Christmas cracker - but with Spurs taking away the prize.

The next two games, against Fulham and West Ham will certainly tell if we're top 4 material.. We're a real force at home but away from home?! We saw that against Blackburn too.. So beating Fulham, who just hammered Man Utd days ago at Craven Cottage, would really put us in there for a challenge.. A win would be great against Fulham but i'll be happy with a draw to be honest.. It'll be interesting to see wat happens.. COME ON YOU SPURS!!

SPURS to mount a realistic challenge for a top four spot, they need to stick to their cuurent squad, without offloading any player in the January sales.

Nice article Colin. Merry Christmas to you! I agree - Spurs have looked more effective without Keane...

What do you think of these rumours linking Dawson to Sunderland?

Surely nonsense. I'd love to see Daws get an extended run in the side, he deserves it. King and Woodgate shouldn't be automatic choices when fit - not with Daws in such fine form.

I have to be honest and say that when Spurs play so-called "lesser" opposition, i.e. Wolves, Stoke, Blackburn, Sunderland, etc...I become very nervous. After annialating City I thought "Oh no! Blackburn...draw or loss... here we come ..." It was a pleasant surprise to see us start to shake off that "soft under-belly" reputation for once. Here's hoping we can continue this good form. The team's shaping up into a predictably solid XI (with Keane and Jenas on the subs bench)...HOWEVER, I must say that Jenas's introduction, for me, made the difference against Blackburn. I am a Palacois fan, but has Jenas done enough to take his place back? he has done this now a few times in a row. Comments please...

we do not have to offload any player during the january transfer window. We are doing so well at the moment and need everyones contribution...KUDOS to Nico Kranjcar, what a signing he has been for us this season.Well done kranjcer..keep up the good work.

Why does my original comment say "3 weeks, 6 days ago"? Could have sworn it was only this morning!

Mark Ross: Yeah I thought Jenas looked really sharp against Blackburn and made a big difference. Looks like the compeition for places is doing him some good.

I think Hudd is being a bit overrated this season - I'd like to see Jenas and Palacios start against Fulham.

While Keano deservedly takes criticism and has found his spot on the bench, I think it would be incredibly foolish to sell him in January. While he wasn't spectacular with his sub minutes, he did do some good things and even had a hand in Crouchy's second. I would like to hear talks of Jenas being off-loaded in January be stopped. He performed admirably and brought quite a bit of energy to the pitch last Saturday. Maybe not first choice material yet, but an excellent option from the bench. He lacks the confidence that comes from getting a good run in the side, but he is starting to show his form again, even in limited minutes. Mark was spot on above. I also think Bale has done well with his time lately and obviously has been training well enough for 'Arry to give him some more looks. Still so young, but with time, opportunity and without trips to the physio, I think he has tremendous quality. Gio as well. Niko has been marvelous.

Palacios's form has clearly dipped recently. I only watched highlights of the B-burn game, but it seemed like Jenas made a difference. In the past I've been a huge Palacios fan and a negative nellie when it comes to JJ (I was all for shipping him off to Inter haha) but it wouldn't hurt to throw him in for a change and see what happens. Palacios is consistently the mid getting subbed off, sometimes even before the 60 min mark. What I hope for is a Kranjcar, Huddlestone, Modric, Lennon starting four. Modric was only moved to the left end of last season, and in my mind with limited results. He works best as a central string puller. With Huddlestone sitting back and defending more instead of just pummeling the ball 20 or so yards over the crossbar, Modric and Kranjcar and Lennon can feed off each other fizzing in fantastic crosses. Sounds like a plan to me.

To all, thanks for the constructive comments.

James147: Jenas fell victim to footy's No.1 killer. COMPLANCENCY! Now that he is scrapping for his place he is performing admirably. Maybe the gaffer needs to give the Hudd a break (I'm a Hudd fan) and pair JJ up with Wilson.Examine his options, huh? Dawson to Sunderland...what a load of bollocks!
Patrick: Agree about Bale. When Essou-Ekkotou goes to the ACN with Cameroon Bale will start at left back. Go Gareth!
Nathaniel: Without Wilson P or JJ in the middle we'll loose a bit of bite and crunch. We need that kind of player. In my opinion one of the two must play.
Lastly, Big Nic Kranjaer has been the bargain and Spurs player of the season. Well done 'arry!
With Bridge being highlighted as one of City's defensive frailties, makes me wonder why Corluka was allowed to leave. Good for Spurs though!

I am from Africa and follow the English game on the telly and the net and watch plenty of Sky News.

Can anyone tell me anymore about the "illegal" Spurs player party and why Harry is so revved up? News claim that Keane was the main instigator but nothing more has been said. Who else has been implicted and what's the final verdict/s?

Colin? do you know anymore?

I have supported Spurs for 50yrs and more and the
team we have this season makes me excited.I so love Krankjar one of the best buys and players this season also Dawson marvellous and JJ;Defoe;Crouch;Bassong it just goes on.Three days before Harry joined us I rang my son and said the one manager I would like at the Lane is
H.Redknapp and bless my soul Levy brought him in
and what a revelation he has been.Anybody saying
Harry cannot manage a top club is talking out of
their rear end.I say bring on the Champions League and see Harry go.I have SPURS running through my veins and in my blood and would like to see us where we belong at the top and even winning the league in the next season or two.
So come on my beloved SPURS just keep going the
way you are and at least Bassong is not going to
the Africa cup in Jan;thats got to be good news.
Hope you all agree with me COYS///////////////

This team is finally a contender (not pretender)...

Overall.....

Sell Keane or Pavs......just pick one and keep one. Or maybe, sell both and add Villa ? a guy can dream....

JJ is reserve material only.....plain and simple

Try GBale on the LW and move Modric to CAM. Huddlestone can come off the pine....

Backline is fine......just need to stay healthy

And, really the POY (to-date).....Gomes. That Fulham performance was off the charts.

COYS!

Good good spurs!

On Jenas, he's a confidence player, struggling for touch atm. When he's on tho, good enough for england.
