Harry Redknapp felt that Spurs were hit by a "sucker punch" from Stoke on Saturday, and it is true that the visitors capitalized on one of very few meaningful attempts on goal. The fact remains, however, that this is the kind of fixture from which Spurs must take maximum points if they have aspirations to challenge for a place in the top four. The late Glenn Whelan strike gave Stoke their first away win of the season and, especially outwith the Britannia Stadium, they are little more than a workmanlike side.

Perhaps, though, hard work is enough when facing a midfield that features Tom Huddlestone and the player who eventually replaced him, Jermaine Jenas. While Huddlestone lacks pace and mobility, Jenas lacks aggression and commitment. The level of commitment shown by Aaron Lennon must also be called into question, as the winger apparently decided that he could not continue the game, thus reducing Spurs to ten men with 15 minutes still to go and the score deadlocked. Lennon might have looked to the example of Jonathan Woodgate, who was forced to leave the field during the first quarter-hour of the match with an actual injury, following a typically brave clearance to deny Stoke a goal.

Astonishingly, the manager admitted after the game that in regard to Lennon's walk-off,

"I was hoping he could stay on but he couldn't and suddenly we were down to 10 men. We're not sure what the problem is. He just said he couldn't carry on and that was that ... I don't want to say any more, I don't want to cause an issue. "

Harry should have plenty to say both about and to a player who apparently lacks the heart to stay on the field and support his teammates, even if only as a passenger. It's hard to imagine Tony Pulis adopting the same kind of "kid gloves" stance if it had been one of the Stoke players who had taken a knock and then headed for the dressing room.

Lennon is, of course, one of the first names on the team sheet each week and so maybe this means that he is beyond criticism. The same obviously holds true for Robbie Keane, who was given yet another start and, one shot on goal aside, contributed nothing. Keane needs a period on the bench or perhaps even to be moved on. If he does not go in January, then surely Roman Pavyluchenko will, since Guus Hiddink has already indicated that appearing for Russia in the World Cup finals is dependent on playing first team football. Keane's own international manager was looking on at White Hart Lane: Trapattoni will not be relishing a play-off against France if he is depending on the Spurs captain to lead and inspire the Ireland team.

Yet, despite another lacklustre performance, Keane will no doubt start against Arsenal on Saturday, especially since Defoe will still be serving his three-match suspension. Spurs are now in fourth place. Whether they are still in the top four come the beginning of November is starting to look very doubtful.

lets at least try and muster some enthusiasm!!

finally we have fit center-halves

jermaine defoe will be off suspension soon, and luka will be fit again soonish. some inspiration from modric will lead spurs to results like we saw at the beginning of the season.

agreed about lennon - lad is getting a big head after all of his england caps. give him a week or two on the bench too to teach him a lesson. maybe give bentley a start - that would be a slap in the face

Just stop all the bull and stirring up about Lennon etc, it's early days long way to go yet.I still beleive we can acheive a top 4-5th spot, dont write us off yet. Look at LFC they are bellow us the goons are not a threat, so come on you yids get behind the boys in white. And we know Harry wont buy or sell for the hell of it, we have a good strong squad now. They wrote Gomez off last term but look at him now, dont forget how long the season is. Others around us might start to get injuries and struggle due to lack of players.

Arron Lennon has good a player he is, the loss to Stoke on Saturday was caused by him.The taem was pressurising Stoke and a goal was in the offing, but Lennon had to walk off the field and leave his team mates a man short.I would like to know what Lennon thought on Saturday, that we were winning and did not need him? Harry should drop him for the next few games. With Lennon's attitude I can't see Spurs finishing in the top 6.

Colin,

Lennon rolled his left ankle pretty badly when he was tackled from behind by Whelan shortly after the latter came on. I believe the challenge earned Whelan a booking. Lennon was not moving well at all in the aftermath. I think questioning the validity of his injury is more than a tad unfair without knowing all the facts.

Could Lennon have stayed on and hobbled through the final quarter of an hour? Perhaps. But I'd rather he take care of himself and not risk aggravating a minor injury such that it becomes more serious. We'll need that guy on the pitch for more than those 15 minutes against Stoke if we want to push on.

If you must anoint a scapegoat for this frustrating result (other than Lady Luck), consider that Whelan's reckless tackle on Lennon was the first challenge to earn a yellow card in the entire game. Seventy-five minutes of persistent fouling prior to that...nothing.

Aaron Lennon is a superb player with great ability. He has great potential and dedication for his team. If he had leave the pitch,it must be really serious. I am only anxious about his injury. His place in starting eleven should not be in any doubt

I think it's hard for footballers not to have "big heads" considering their achievements whether it be sportingly or financially.

I don't see one walk off as a problem, especially if the guy is injured. I guess it becomes a problem if it happens again and again. In which case players may need to be reminded of the points I have made at the beginning of this comment.

Perhaps a difference should be defined between a football player and football celebrity.

I don't think people should underestimate the amount of mental focus placed on players considering the number and influence of voices they hear everyday.

I pointed this out to some friends earlier:

Keane's romp was against Burnley at White Hart Lane. Count it for more if he does against someone else.

Problem is, he hasn't. For whatever reason, that will be his match of the season, and that will be that. In the interim, give Pav a chance. No doubt the weekend would give him a motivation factor unlike most with Arshavin on the other side, and might spark him to try and better his compatriot.

Looking at the Everton match, Keane was slightly more useful, but, then again, so was Huddlestone. Take it for what it might be worth.

As far as the middle of the pitch, consider the Huddlestone/Jenas duo a concern against Arsenal. Maybe a midfield that goes Bentley/Palacios/Jenas/Kranjcar would work, though maybe Bale for Jenas and Kranjcar inside would work, although the idea I'm sure might be laughable to some.

And, as usual, let's all pray that the defense can remain in one piece, and not have another Chelsea-esque match in store.

I am in agreement with Colin and Rumi about Lennon. When he ran at Stoke we looked good. The ref did let a fair bit of fowling take place and Stoke benefitted from that it seemed to me in the main. I wondered if Keane's exit from the game was a bit premature as he was active and creative at times whereas Pav was'nt. Crouch may have been a touch unlucky, but he needed to make his presence felt a little more in the 6yd area against Stoke who did defend really well. What's with the early doom and gloom anyway? Spurs have had a great start and with Modric back we can hold our own at the top. We have a large squad with much talent.Players like Alan Hutton cannot get a start of late which shows the depth we now have. Wait til after Xmas before predictions like we will not finish in top group aye!! I still think we can and ought to!!

We have faltered against two of the so called big four, but we have to look at those games and it was clear that the ref was looking at another game, against Man U we were denied a penalty which would have changed the game being one up.
The true test will be this weekend against Arsenal which we should win comfortable reason being the depth we have in the squad. We have full squad to choose from with the exception of Lennon,it is Bentley time to shine like last season

Find it extremly difficult in defending Lennon,s commitment. Average players with a lot of heart are more valuable than players who play only when they want to. Lennon will never reach the stage og a good player with a "Me" type attitude. His actions on saturday disgusted me.

Harry shame on you for saying Arsenal have boys not men. And your men failed to beat the boys. Thus far you failed to keep Spurs on track & be competitive against big 4. You are not even closer to Europa League. I think you better stop condemming the other teams instead look how to improve Spurs further.
