Harry Redknapp has finally dipped his toe into the transfer market with the signing of Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker from Sheffield United. While many of the Spurs fans were no doubt looking for a bigger splash, the acquisition of the two young full backs seems like a reasonable bit of business. Naughton in particular looks like a good buy, able to play at both left and right back and has been capped at under-21 level. He also won a spot in the PFA's Championship team of the season, no small feat given the competitiveness of that league.

The only questionable aspect of the transfers is that Spurs look top-heavy in those positions. Having said that, Chris Gunter has already been shipped out to Nottingham Forest, the hapless Gilberto has been shown the door and the never-popular Chimbonda is constantly being touted as the makeweight in various other deals. Hopefully Redknapp will hang on to Bale, Corluka, Hutton and the much-improved Assou-Ekotto. Bale has struggled with form and injuries since joining Spurs two seasons ago, but has shown his undoubted talent in fits and starts, and offers options on the left hand side of midfield as well as at left back. In the same vein, Corluka can slot in at center half, a position where the team unquestionably needs cover. Alan Hutton has also suffered through injury but is now in a position to make the right back berth his own. Although he has the look of an older man, Hutton is still only 24 and has the quality to develop into a player of the very highest calibre.

Looking towards the other end of the spectrum, Didier Zokora is gone and Darren Bent might be going. Although the fee for Zokora is officially "undisclosed", it seems as if Spurs have essentially recouped the money that was paid for him. This represents a good price for a player who, unfortunately, will probably be remembered most for his glaring miss in the 2008 Carling Cup final. If Bent does move to Sunderland, it looks as if Spurs will take a hit on the almost £17m that was shelled out for him in 2007. That fee at that time was crazy. Whether Steve Bruce will be even crazier in parting with a reputed £12m for him now is open to question.

Bent is reportedly a target for Sunderland because Peter Crouch is unwilling to move to the north east. In the great merry-go-round that is the transfer window, the funds accrued by Spurs could then be used to bring Crouch to the club where he started life as a professional footballer. A reunited Crouch and Defoe would undoubtedly create a buzz among the Spurs fans, and also no doubt in the mind of Fabio Capello.

Harry Redknapp appears - or perhaps wishes to appear - to have poured cold water on the deal saying that,

"I like Crouchie but at the moment we have got four good strikers so it's not a priority. We are not desperate at the moment for strikers."

If four becomes three in the next few days, however, the Premiership's tallest player could well be on display at the Lane next season.

If I had to choose between three strikers, Crouch, Huntelaar or Chamakh, I'd go for Marouane Chamakh every time. I can understand the interest in Crouch and fans wanting to see him tean up with Defoe but Chamakh is younger with good vision and pace. More importantly, he is dying to play in England and will play his heart out for the team that takes him on.
As for Huntelaar, I think it is a mistake to buy any player from a team like Real Madrid; they think they are playing for a lesser team, their heart is not in it and they expect their team mates to play for them whereas it should be quite the opposite.

i think bent is avevy good striker given the chance he would come good this season forget huntelaar let him look for another club areal real reject he has nothing of quality that bent does not have hope wilson can pick up look poor against barca

Get rid of Bent and Hutton, Sign Bassong, an expierenced CM, and Huntelaar. Quality squad.
HuntelaaR - Defoe
Modric - Poulsen/Viera/JJ - Palacios - Lennon
BAE - King - Woodgate - Corluka
Gomes

Of course that would only work when everone's fit, and it seems as if we will have 3 CBs for the seasons start, so Corluka will probably have to slot in, and Bassong, if he's hopefully bought, will play in place of woodgate, with Knaughton/Hutton at RB.
Would like Viera to come TBH. He wants to play here, and would provide so much experience/teaching for our midfield, mainly JJ, Huddlestone, and Palacios. Palacios could become world class under his tutilage.

Priority: CB, Mid, Striker

COME ON YOU SPURS! I simply cannot understand why we were in for Crouch anyway. Not to suggest we don't need some sort of attacking suppliment but 'Arry has a serious dilemma on his hands that has basically been with Tottenham for over 2 seasons. That is in defence! Why have we not addessed the Ledley King situation? How long can we possibly live in the fantasy world that he is going to make it? As a former player, I know how hard it is to earn a spot in a team like Spurs. So, why is a player like King kept in the starting lineup? There are many great players out there dying for an oppurtunity to play in his spot. And they deserve that chance. And the supporters deserve better. It has been quite obvious that we need central defence and midfield reinforcements. Now, with the injuries to our defenders, we are in sort of panic mode when we could, and should have had solid backs in the team already.

Sign players capable of beating Liverpool in the opening match. 1st match is always important to take Spurs to greater heights. Vieira will be a good buy. Keep Pavlyuchenko instead of buying Crouch. HR should focus on defence & don't be too depended on King.

Posted by yin-rong on 07/26/2009

I think Bassong would make a reasonable purchase, as I expect any Newcastle player to want to leave anyway. He would make a good backup for King when King's knee can't take it anymore. With Woodgate, Corluka, Hutton and Bale, as well as the 2 new signings from Sheffield, I don't understand why fans are clamouring for more defenders.
The key problem lies in attack, where Tottenham have not found a player who can replace their loss of Berbatov. Stop re-buying players like Keane and Defoe, you sold them with a good profit anyway. Assuming Bent and Pavlyuchenko go, Crouch does not seem the ideal replacement as inflated prices would definitely have to be paid. As for who is going to be brought in...that's up to Harry!

Personally, I don't really see why Harry wants Viera unless he has that little faith in both Jenas and Huddlestone, which, if that were the case, why hasn't he let Jenas go to Inter? Maybe that's going to be part of the swap, which I think is ludicrous.

If Dawson wasn't hurt, the defense might be able to skid by, since it was pretty much common knowledge that both King and Woodgate are injury-prone, but if they do get someone, they might make it work by throwing Corluka to the middle for the time being.

If Harry really wants a new striker, he needs to drop two of who he has, more than likely Bent and Pavlyuchenko. Right now he's got four strikers who play much too similarly to really give them options, and while Crouch isn't particularly fast he can at least hold up the ball and give them a different look.

They ought to take another look at Dos Santos, too. Gio dragged Mexico kicking and screaming to a Gold Cup championship, and a lefty with speed couldn't hurt anyone, could it?

As a long suffering Spurs fan from Singapore these are my comments.
Yes Ledley King should be retired, sorry about his condition but Spurs should stop being a charity club.
Get a hard defender to play with the cool, classy Woodgate. Like how Vidic makes Rio look good when he is just average.
No Crouch please and let Bent go, stick to Pavluchenko, he will be a class player.
I also think bringing in Viera will be good as Jenas and Palacios will benefit lots from him. And when Jenas and Palacios improve Modric and Lennon will have the freedom to run riot on the opposition.

Spurs fans... STOP DREAMING and get back to reality. Your Team's not even going to finish strongly let alone win anything.

Posted by dave on 07/28/2009

Buy buy buy. That's all Spurs ever do, Redknapp being the latest in a long line of cheque book managers.

the good news is Bent is on his way out. the bad news is that we have bought Peter Crouch.Crouch does not fit into the style of Spurs play. wedo not have wingers who cross very well Arron Lennon is getting there but not yet

Please please get a CB. The defends needs someone strong to hold the team together. If both King & Woodgate are fit, it sure makes a lot of difference ... Please please get a GOOD CB.

Posted by Mike Funnell on 07/29/2009

Harry, If you are still looking for a central defender, you could do worse than have a look at Cris who has given the French press to understand that he is keen on leaving Lyon.

Posted by Mark on 07/30/2009

We do need a CB, and I hope that we can get an established CB too! I think Crouch will be good, but we have Strikers now, that are good enough anyway... we should be concentrating on LM, LB and CB.
I agree Spurs always "buy first... oops later" (when they buy lemons!). Look in house, we have some good players! Dos Santos is a good player, Tarrabt is good, they just need playing time! Come Redders... look in house for Mid & Attack!! Buy whats needed... "Defence"!!
COYS!!

Get a quality CB and a goalie. These areas need reinforcing. Remember when we "parked the bus" and made opponents hard to score against us?

Posted by Maandip Gill on 07/30/2009

Well done Harry!! A really good buy there.. Crouch..Now im just hoping he'll be able 2 get rid of Roman as soon as possible in order 2 get the cash available 2 capture Bassong..We cant rely on just King and Woodgate whole season long..yes, Corluka can play as a CB as well, but i'd prefer him 2 play is his RB position..Dawson just isn't good enough! Another two new faces and we'll be able 2 compete with any team in the premeir league next season! Probably Bassong and Vieira could be it..Come on you spurs!!

Posted by stevo on 07/31/2009

Crouch is a good "target man"? What kind of ball are you going to play to him? A long ball from defence in the hope that he'll do something with it? That's not Spurs' playing style. There is no point having a player like Crouch up front unless you are going to swing in crosses from the wings. Lennon has enough problems finding a teammate with a cross played on the deck! Unfortunately "Crouchie" is not fast enough to run past the defence onto a through ball. You need someone with pace for that. Huntelaar anyone?

Posted by Galant on 08/03/2009

Spur needs a leader, an experienced leader, a motivating leader. Woodgate is good, but we need someone more motivating, Keane was perfect before Liverpool exit. Ramos bought too many players and sold the most important player in the wrong time, and now the problem is they can not be bond together, tho' Robbie returned. In my opinion, if the rumor for Beckham's London returning is true, he is much more better than the Patrick thing.

Posted by LENNIE NAIDOO on 08/03/2009

If we can get Joe Cole then buying Crouch makes sense. Joe Cole is an accomplished winger and he will be able to cross the ball for Crouch. I hope Harry is serious about Cole

Spurs play like champions in pre-season matches. Pls show the same commitment in real competition & proof that in the opening against Liverpool.
First there were news about AYoung, Robben then PVieira & now JCole. Spurs pls be serious don't just take us for a ride. If can't afford to sign good player then just do it with what you have now. I don't think any world class players dare to join Spurs. HR don't waste your time looking out for players, get them ready for the real competition ahead. Time is running out, proof you can do it.

Posted by Leo on 08/05/2009

Once again a simple word " come on u spurs,to dare is to do" where is the team spirit, team player, team leader n star all gone like all our footballclub legend...When really we can develope a group of young n talented player fr the youth academy ???? ( Beside Tom H.) We r short of box predator ( like klinsmann, lineker )..A good ball crosser ( D. Anderton, Ginola)..A solid defender ( S.Campbell, G.Mabutt) A genius (T.Sheringham )..
We should sell Striker : D.Bent,Pavluychenko bring in either two of them ( V.Nistelrooy, Aguero, Bojan, Adriano, Chamakh.) In midfield loan out O'Hara n Kevin get more 1st team experience.Sell off ( Santos or may b Bentley s well )santos which i believed he r not suit for premier league although he is very talented.. Bring in (W.Sneijder, V.D.Vaart) In defender sell off ( Hutton, Chimbonda, Corluka )Bring in( Sergio Ramos,C.Metzelder,Lahm)...This incoming new season if new blood r not coming in or any boom up fr the youth then it ll just another BIG BLOW

Posted by LENNIE NAIDOO on 08/06/2009

WELL DONE HARRY FOR CAPTURING BASSONG WHEN ALL PLAYERS ARE FIT SPURS WILL BE A REALLY GOOD SIDE AND MAYBE WE WILL GET SOME SILVERWARE THIS SEASON

Posted by Maandip Gill on 08/13/2009

Hallo friend, plz get real..we are just not able to bring in established players such as Aguero, Ramos or what so ever unless we're a strong force in europe..we're not even in the europa league this season..a major blow there! I really think our current squad is good enough to challange for, the least, a top 6 finish..or maybe even top 4..who knows?? that'll be a good archievement for Spurs for the new season, looking at the fact that we're not in europe this season..fair enough? we've got a good gk in Gomes..though he's error-prone, he has always lived up to our expectations..Corluka, Hutton, and Ekotto have really improved and i think they're certainly good enough to be in Spurs starting 11, agreed? chimbonda? not so..Bassong was a really good buy..maybe all we need now is just another established CB..thats about it.. Palacios, Lennon and Modric have done briliantly..i dont think Jenas is simply good enough to fire Spurs to glory..Crouch, Keane, Defoe and Roman are decent forwards..!
