A strange sort of season for Spurs came to a subdued end at Liverpool. After the first eight games of the campaign, the fans might have looked ahead to this fixture and imagined the possibility of needing to win it to stave off relegation. The arrival of Harry Redknapp, his reinvigoration of the team, and his signings in the January transfer window ensured that that scenario did not come to pass.

And yet this was a game that did need to be won, if Spurs were to cap a marvelous turnaround in their fortunes with qualification for the Europa League. Admittedly Anfield has not been a happy hunting ground for the club, but even so, the match was played out - on Spurs' part at least - as if it were meaningless. Even the manager described it afterwards as "a typical end of season game".

The most glaring illustration of this was the behavior of Robbie Keane, after he had beaten Pepe Reina to bring the score back to 2-1. With 15 minutes left and with European qualification rivals Fulham losing at home to Everton, Keane turned away as if he had scored the most inconsequential consolation goal imaginable. On the face of it - and on the performance of the team overall on the day - two more Spurs goals were not very likely. But they were also not impossible. Keane may be renowned for not celebrating goals against former clubs, but this was placing his own ego or image - whatever he wants to call it - ahead of the interests of the club. At 2-1, the captain of the team should be encouraging his teammates to push on, not strolling back to the centre circle with a face like an 8 year old who didn't get the Wii he wanted for Christmas.

Partly as a result of injuries both before and during the game, several players who have not featured much under Harry Redknapp were given an opportunity to show what they could do - and none of them took it. Bale at least worked hard. Pavlyuchenko looked uninterested when he came on for Defoe, adding fuel to the rumors that he will be sold in the summer. As far as David Bentley is concerned, his gutless display will make no difference to his future at the club, since Redknapp has already implied that his perennially unused substitute does not have one:

"David's going to look at it and think 'hang on, I'm not getting in the team even when Aaron Lennon's not fit. Maybe it is time I moved on'. "

If Bentley and Pavlyuchenko go, perhaps along with Bent and Zokora, the manager will have raised at least part of the funds required to bring in the "two or three" players he believes he needs to mount a challenge on the top six. Or maybe the top four - he never seems quite sure which is the realistic objective. One thing he can be sure of is that none of the aforementioned players will sell for anything like the money that was paid for them. The emphatic nature of Liverpool's victory suggests that Harry will need to deal skillfully during the summer if the Spurs' fans are to experience the success they crave and deserve.

Very true statement about Keane. The last 8 or so games, he has been ineffectual. I'm a big admirer of Keane, and hope that this was just disappointment that his dream move did not go as planned. That he will be back to what we know next year!
For the rest. I hope Bale uses the talent that he seems to posses. I like Bentley, but his future seems pretty clear, if he could seem enthusiastic he may have had a chance in the team.

I hope we invest in Downing (i know he's out for 6 months) but desperatey need a quality left winger! Bent and Pav go? Not too sad about that, although, I like Pav as a player and may give us a bit more next year after a rest!

I hope we do get quality players in. Not "has beens" as Rednapp has bought on the past.

Top 6 next year!!

Well I don't know how much Harry really wanted the Europa League anyway - I think he'd rather spend that time strengthening the club's EPL presence then fiddling with a European campaign when the club was flirting with relegation for the first half of the season.

Pav, bentley need to go. I'm not a huge fan of Bent but he was the club's top scorer. Keane I think has had more of an impact in the locker room than on the field, but if he doesn't get his scoring legs back under him he will be dead weight next season. I can't wait to see what all Harry does - I thought Palacios was a good addition and Gomes seemed to have found his game again - it'll be interesting for sure.

Let me just start of and say this, im proud of Tottenham, they fought back from the brink and challenged for the Europa league. Did we want it??? I think deep down 'Arry did not.

To Pav. he should not be sold, he deserves to stay. He was had a nonstop season, going from Russian Prem. to English Prem. with no rest. He has plenty of potential and was one of the main reasons we go to the Carling Cup finals, but now the big boys are back people just overlook him, the forget how he was pushed up front by himself, and how so much was asked of him. I say stay, he can be a real contender....

I keep thinking back to our first 8 games. Seven loses, if we had tied or won those, where would we have been? Challenging for 4th? 5th? We have the potential, and the team 'Arry is pulling for now is stronger and has a leader.

We may have beat Liverpool IF Lennon was healthy, Palacios was back, and Dawson back. So lets look to the future. To the possibilities of beating Arsenal, and winning!!

Absolutely delighted we didn't qualify for Europa. To get to the final, teams need to play the equivalent of 50% of a premiership season! Don't need that kind of distraction. Top 5 and a good FA Cup run would be a nice goal for next season.

Really think that Spurs are only a couple of players away from being a very good side. A top quality central midfielder (Barry) to play next to Wilson and a proven target man (not Santa Cruz) to play next to Defoe and we'll be a match for most.

Totally agree about Keane, poor guy's been damaged goods since his trip up north. His goal on Sunday must have been his first shot on target in weeks.

Perhaps is good not qualified for European League. At least Spurs can focus much on the BPL and march towards top four. I am a big fan for Spurs as well as Harry. If Ramos is 'Cups King' then Harry is 'Relegation Saver'. Martin Jol also did a great job, fifth place for twice, very close to Champions League. Downing is good LM/LW for Spurs. Just sell Rocha, Hutton, Gunter, and Zokora to raise fund. Anyway, i cant wait for next season.

Spot on commentating about Robbie. I love the guy, he will always have a real place in Spurs lore but it is time to say goodbye. In the last half of the season, we have yet to see the Robbie we know and love and instead we have a man who looks lost. Chasing the ball, missing sitters and just basically not being a great leader.

Leds is a great leader and I understand Harry trying to take some of the pressure off of him but at least give the armband to someone who has been here all season, like Woodgate of even BAE. The two of them have been playing great all year and everyone has to agree that BAE has had a fantastic yr at LB. He combines well with Modric down the wing and his crosses have been getting better and better with each game. Plus a little speed on the wings is great to have (plus a nice big afro to strike fear in the opponents hearts).

Outs: Bentley, Chimbonda, Zokora Gilberto (yes he's still on the team), Jenas, Bent and Keane.
Ins: Dzenko, Elia, Bastos, a CB and DMF

Pavlyuchenko is a bit of whiner. His tendency to sulk is not a good fit - chemistry-wise - for the true team concept Redknapp is trying to build at Tottenham. Move him ASAP for as much cash as possible. They need Keane as much in the locker room as on the pitch. COME ON YOU SPURS!

Well,i agree that my Keane hasn't been the man we have known all a long, but believe it all not,he is a force to recon with.We need the lad next season..yess,we need a man who can sort-out difficult situations....he has done it all along.

For Bent,he was our Top scorer..it's simple we need him..any discusions on this?surely not!

Pev and Bentley, with all due respect to these great players,i kindly request they go.surely, their talent has failed to fit in Spurs.

For Zokora,we realy still need this very industrious MIDF.Palacious my be better than him as a holding MIDF,but think of injuries & suspensions.Harry could even gamble him as an attacking MIDF...lets plan well, otherwise we might end-up as our neighbours...i mean the Arsenal that never blasts..LOL!!!

Untouchable: Lennon.
Must stay: Modric, Palacios, Woody and Leds.
Should stay: Pav, Charlie, Gomes, BAE, Hutton and Defoe.
Might stay: Hudds, Bent and Bale.
Hit the road: Everyone else. Especially JJ, Keane, Bentley and O'Hara. O'Hara is by far our worst player. All is he does is pass the ball to the other team. The Great White Dope!

I am a big fan of Spurs. I always wish Spurs can get better & challenge the top 4 teams but it's quite disappointing we have not achieve this for the past many years. Pls bring in more quality & committed players to end the new season in a promising position. What is the point to play in Europa if can't even match the top BPL teams. Look how successful is MU, Liverpool & Arsenal. Pls scrap all the non performing players. Bring those has passion for football & pride for Spurs.

it was clearly a very poor season until redknapp came along, and made the necessary changes, but the changes arent complete.
bent and r. pvlyuchenko should be out and cisse be in.
downing, luis jimenez and yoann gourcuff should be in instead of bentley, o'hara and zokora.
in the defence lescott should be brought in and either woodgate or m. dawson should be out.
the departur of wonderkid terry dixon to west ham, i think, really dissapointed me, as i really believed that he would one day grow up to become a home-grown hero for us !

I never thought i would hear Spurs fans saying they're glad we did'nt PLAY in europe. These fans were obviously born after 1984 and hav'nt experienced the real EURO nights at the lane.
Sad, so sad, without euro football what good players do you think will come? just the usual over-rated has beens!! Can any spurs fan tell me why we should even be considering Kerwyn Jones? so off we pop to spain for 2 1/2 good men, failed and decided to go for....reo coker hmm. I'm not even going to mention the tail of two Russian hotshots, one went to spurs, the other...nuff said.I do not like this PUBLIC random speculation of transfers, went to my gran's and HR had put a bid in for her as well.
I was a big fan of M Jol, 2 back to back 5th finishes, can only get better eh?18 months on and were in the same position, only with no european soccer,,fantastic. I will wait until xmas before the jury gives it's verdict on HR.
