Spurs followed up last week’s fantastic away win at Aston Villa with an even more impressive victory against title-chasing Chelsea. In fact, Spurs looked more like the team trying to take advantage of Man Utd’s slip-up at Fulham.
Chelsea’s key players in the middle of the field, Lampard and Essien, were snuffed out, particularly by the tough-tackling Palacios - to the extent that Essien was taken off towards the end.
Up front, Nicolas Anelka kept dropping deeper and deeper in a vain attempt to see some of the ball, while a number of the other Chelsea players - most notably Ballack - seemed unable to summon up the requisite enthusiasm for a London derby that also presented an opportunity to rejoin the race for first place.
By contrast, a hardworking and inventive Spurs side proved worthy winners, as they had at Villa Park. Gomes was outstanding in goal, Keane ran tirelessly and Modric, as well as scoring the winner, was also the best player on the pitch. While Spurs remain the only team not to have fielded an unchanged side in the Premier League this season, the only difference from last week was that Corluka was included ahead of Zokora from the start.
It's clear that Harry Redknapp now has more than the nucleus of a settled side in mind. The back-four pick themselves, with the possible exception of Assou-Ekotto. While the Cameroonian performed competently enough on Saturday, he may well be the player under threat once the impeccable Alan Hutton returns to full fitness. The situation is the same in the middle, with Jenas being the only one of the first-choice four who still needs to convince week-in, week-out - although, in fairness, he is beginning to find some form.
The real question is up-front. Unless the manager intends to play Keane and Defoe together, he is left with the not altogether happy choice of selecting either Bent or Pavlyuchenko to fill the role of central striker. The Russian seems to have become the forgotten man at White Hart Lane, while Bent remains an intensely frustrating figure. Like Jenas, he has been better in recent games and certainly showed commitment against Chelsea. The facts remain, however, that he possesses a poor first touch, is not good at holding up the ball and more often than not seems to choke when a clear scoring chance presents itself.
At least Bent is getting a game, which is more than can be said for the equally costly David Bentley. Harry Redknapp seemed to be indicating his feelings about Bentley in comments he made ostensibly about Aaron Lennon, who has just agreed a new deal with Spurs. Looking at signings made before he arrived at the club, Redknapp speculated,
"They couldn't have fancied Lennon that much to have signed Bentley. Why would you sign two wide right players? Strange, isn't it?"
The manager went on to say that: "You have to keep your best players to build a team. If you start selling your Aaron Lennons then you are back where you were at the start of this season. We are in a situation where we are not looking to sell any of our best players this year in the summer."
While the best players are seemingly off limits, the worst - and there have been few worse than Bentley this season - are presumably available at the right price.
One player who will certainly not be up for sale is the surprise inclusion in the next England squad. While teammate Aaron Lennon perhaps has a better chance of appearing in the upcoming games against Slovakia and Ukraine, this is still a well-deserved accolade for Spurs stalwart, Ledley King.

Totally agree - we played really well yesterday, though we were a bit fortunate not to concede in the last several minutes when they pressed hard.
I was a bit down on Assou-Ekotto earlier this season, but he seems to have settled down well now, and is actually playing pretty damn well. I feel a bit bad for Zokora, whose energy and distribution make him a good partner (I'd think) for the steely tackling of Palacios, but definitely *not* a right back against one of the best left wingers in the EPL.
Modric has really surprised me: I thought he was a bit waif-like for the EPL, but he's shown a lot of pluck for such a small guy - not afraid to take the ball in on the most bruising of opponents, if he goes down he's right back up again.

Spurs has a long way since Juande Ramos and Martin Jol who are both doing well as far as their respective leagues are concerned (Real M & Hamburg FC). The problem may have started with Ledley King's injury or Juande's English but their setling in well. The back four look very good but up front is looking a little shaby with Bent and Pavlyuchenko. Don't get me wrong. Keane is looking fine and what happens to these two when Defoe returns. Would it be Bent or Pavlyuchenko that Redknapp may push this summer? Bentley would also be worried with the way Lenon is playing.
cheers

They need to bring Dos Santos back. He has that bit of flair that Spurs really needs. I'm hoping his loan at Ipswich ain't a foreshadowing to a departure.
Another concern seems to be O'Hara. He doesn't seem to have been playing that well, although he's only been on as a substitute recently and recovered from an injury recently.

watched the game on TV from over here in the States. Great effort and committment.
The core of the team seems the pick themselves, and with the performance of the younger players we look like heading in the right direction.
I think you have to have more faith in Pavlyuchenko than you do in Bent - class will always win out, and he seems to have the better attitude. As for Bentley, I hope he's gone over the summer - Lennon is young enough to play most weeks, and it looks (unfortunately) like we won't be in Europe next season, so the burden of games will be less.
If Hutton is back fit, and we wrap King in cotton-wool while we develop another centre-back, and Jenais continues to develop, and Keane commits to leading for another season or so, then we're looking good.

the issue with juande wasn't his english. it was the management selling both his strikers right before the season started.
that and the lazy players didn't want to train the way juande trained them because it was too "demanding". stark contrast from chelsea who didn't want to train the way scolari asked them too because it was too "light"

Of course you guys can make it to Europe next season. You're only 3 points off 7th spot. I think you guys have the best quality team compared to the 4 clubs ahead of you. Man city will loose away most of the time. Wigan and Fulham are unpredictable and West Ham are not very consistent.
You still have a chance and a very good one of getting that 7th spot.

ekotto and hutton do Not play on the
same flank of defence. It's hutton and
chimbonda on right flank defence with
ekotto and bale on left side defence.
I think ekotto has really developed
and playing excellent.
(If Assou-Ekotto drops out and Hutton comes in, Corluka can move over to play on the left side - CM)

Spurzgrrl, are you having a laugh? Zokora's distribution has impressed you? Can't say I agree with you there. The one change I would like to see us make is to buy an actual left winger this summer (we've needed one for YEARS) and move Modric in the middle to partner Palacios. Say what you will about Jenas, but he's simply not good enough my friends.

Spurzgrrl - the only distribution I saw was the one where he (Zakora) was selling programs outside WHL. Also, Pav does have the attitude. He wants to be on the pitch, in the thick of it, so I'd say that I think Harry is going to dump bent and might be trying to pump up his worth for a summer sell off. All the papers say Sunderland are the front runners so if bent is worth 8 right now and scores a few for us over the next 8, maybe he'll bring us ten. That and the cup of coffee we'll get for Bentley might be enough for a real lefty. Actually, the money they get for bent should be spent on knee surgery for King. That guy is, simply put, a freak . . . a GD fearless freak!

With so much money going around in the EPL, its seems the players are have more power than the coach.I hope this wasn't the case with spurs players an Juande Ramos. It was definatly the case with the chelsea players and Scolari. What happen to the old days when clubs compleltly backed their managers. One of the reasons why manu r so succesful is because Sir Alex is boss and the players respect that. However I do believe spurs have this "respect" now that Harry is here. Anyway great win on the weekend!!

as a spurs fan from australia, i think we need to show some faith in the likes of bentley and bent - both have outstanding potential if they are given proper game time. this article states that bent has a poor touch and can choke - are they forgetting he is tottenham's leading goalscorer this season? when he is given the proper opportunity he can really prove he is worth his 16 million pounds

I'm dissapointed with Bentley and Huddlestone, but feel they should be given the summer and until January of next season to prove themselves.
Remember, Lennon was barely in the first team to begin with, then Redknapp worked on him and now he's got his confidence back and is getting better every game. If Bentley and Huddlestone can put in the work this summer with the team, I'm sure they will both work thier way back into the first team. We spent too much on Bentley to let him go this early. Give him some time.

Keep:
GK - Gomes, Cudicini, Alnwick
DEF - Woodgate, King, Dawson, Corluka, Hutton, Bale
MID - Modric, Palacios, Zokora, Huddlestone, Lennon, Bentley, O'Hara
STR - Keane, Defoe, Pavlyuchenko
Sell everyone else.
Spurs 1st eleven would be (4-4-2 tactic):
GK: Gomes with Cudicini and Alnwick as backup.
CBs: Woodgate and King with Dawson and Corluka as backup.
RB: Corluka with Hutton as backup.
LB: NEW left back with Bale and O'Hara as backup.
DM: Palacios with Zokora as backup.
AM: Modric with Huddlestone as backup.
RM: Lennon can alternate with Bentley.
LM: NEW left midfielder with O'Hara and Bale as backup.
ATTs: Keane, Defoe and Pavlyuchenko can alternate.
Possible left back target: Matthew Taylor (Bolton)
Possible left midfielder target: Downing (Boro), Pedersen (Blackburn)

Harry is finally getting the best out of this group of players. Mod is a fearless playmaker and playing with Robbie only makes him better. Palacios is setting the tone in the middle but I'd like to see Jenes go in the summer and give Huddlestone a chance, he's a bit more physical. I agree Bentley needs to be given until next January, we simply paid too much to give up now. But we need a proven lefty brought in. Lennon is growing into a fine winger and he will be in the England squad soon. With one of the best central defense pairings in the league, and with Chorlie able to play either side, a healthy Hutton should solidify a regular back 4. I was at the match vs. Chelsea and was singing something I never would have believe, Gomes' name. Keep it up! If Harry can keep this squad training hard and playing with belief away from home, a few changes in the summer will have us back on track to battle the big 4. COME ON YOU SPURS!

Palacios has made an enormous impression on our squad since the Jan transfer window. We now have bite and pace in the midfieed with both him and Jenas. This has allowed our wingers (ie. Lennon and Modric) to be creative, and we can now see the results. Having Keano back to run the show on the field is also very helpful.
Good to see that Harry gets the plot, and with a young blossoming squad behind our solid 1st 11, at the Lane, I'd say- for the first time in a year or so- the future is indeed Lilleywhite! COYS!

Gees Darcy your having a laugh arent you? Bent has had his chance and deserves to be pushed on next season. I totally agree with Colin. His first touch his terrible and he does shockingly in one on one situations. This hasnt just happened, it has been going on since we signed him. He may be the highest goalscorer but that is because the rest of the team has put the ball 2 inches from the line and he has tapped it in.Defoe and Keane can create something out of nothing. Bye Bye Benty

It makes me wonder if Russia could've won the Euros if they had Pogrebnyak instead of him

Look at what Wilson Palacios did to Lampard and Essien. Concacaf should not be slept on.

I REALLY BELIEVED THAT OUR TEAM IS GOING IN H=THE RIGHT DIRECTION, SELLING OUR YOUNG PLAYERS WITHOUT GIVING THEM A CHANCE IS THE WRONG MOVE. wE NEED TO KEEP HUDDLESTONE FOR ONE. tHE GUY HAS TO MUCH TALENT TO LET GO SO SOON.

Luka Modric hasn't surprised me at all he is one of the best players in the world if you had watched The Euro 2008 qualifiers and Euro 2008 you wouldn't be surprised by him at all. He pulled the strings for Croatia at Wembley in that memorable Croatia 3:2 against the arrogant english side.
