Hi, PhBell fans!
Well, was that the Champions League final that you expected? Ha! Thought not. Almost everyone who has stopped me in the street over the last week or so (and there's been loads) thought United were going to walk all over Barcelona.
It would be easy to see why all you casual fans would think that. United are a great side, with a superb manager. Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Park Ji-Sung – all fantastic players.
But most of us inside the game, all the other top players I chatted to about the final, we all reckoned Barcá would be able to get on top and dominate with the ball – and that's exactly what happened.
You know, I do read the comments that you leave below, and I've noticed that I do get a bit of stick from you guys about being biased towards the English clubs, implying that I don't know a thing about what goes on in the other European leagues.
That's a load of nonsense. Really winds me up to be honest. Let me tell you right now that, without wanting to sound like I'm swelling off, I probably know more about European football than all you guys put together.
Obviously, the fact that I picked Barcá over United to win the final just proves it. And not only that, I could name all the Barcá starting line-up just from their photos. Apart from that young lad in midfield that no-one had ever heard of before.
Just because I've never played in another European league doesn't mean I don't know what goes on there. For example, it's amazing how much you can learn from football games on the PC and Xbox 360.
Hope that clears things up. Anyway.
I invited a load of the lads round to watch the game with me at home, on the big screen with cinema surround-sound. We usually have a right laugh when we all get together, but this time everyone seemed a bit more serious.
Normally when we all get together to watch a big match at someone's house, we'd get a bit lairy, have a few beers and that. Start jumping around on each other, pulling each other's trousers down, horsing around like lads do when they get together without women to distract.
This time, though, it was dead quiet, everyone was really concentrating on the game (although there were a few comments about how amazing the picture quality was on my HDTV).
From the first whistle, we all agreed that Ferguson got his tactics wrong. Ronaldo down the middle, Rooney on the wing? That was never going to work, was it? United needed the boy Ronaldo up against the creaking bones of Carles Puyol out wide.
I think, basically, the pressure got to old Fergie. Perhaps his age caught up with him and he forgot who played where. I don't know, but he pretty much had a nightmare, didn't he? He basically lost United the Champions League with his tactics.
You know, with how gutted he must feel right now, I wouldn't be surprised if he shocked us all by suddenly deciding he is going to retire, right now. And it might not be a bad thing for United if he did. They could do with a bit of a fresh start, I reckon.
Just look at Barcá's coach, Pep Guardiola. League, Cup and Champions League in his first season? What a legend! I can't believe he's only 38 years old. He's got to be the coolest manager in all of Europe.
Perhaps United could do with someone young and fresh and chilled like him to come in and shake the club up. Fergie can take a job upstairs, entertaining the corporate guests at Old Trafford on match days or something.
Whatever happens with old man Fergie, it will be interesting to see how United bounce back next season. They might be looking at bringing in a few new faces in the transfer market, just to shake things up.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the final as much as I did – and I hope it proves my European knowledge to all the doubters out there!
Although I'm officially on my summer holidays now (GET IN!), I'll be back to blog next week on the crazy roundabout that is the transfer market.
Until then, PB.

It has almost been a week and I have now begun to recover. My starting line up was spot on except for one player, I had Tevez starting up top with Wazza. I do admit now that the Gaffer got it all wrong. With these two forwards and Uniteds width, it would have been a very different match.

As a Barca fan, I have to say that I was nervous going into the final. I knew that Barca's midfield was superior - by miles - but United's vaunted backline and counterstrike options made me wonder. Then I saw the lineup - phew. Bring em on! Anderson? Giggs? Rooney on the wing? Tevez on the bench??? Thank you Sir Alex. But it was the backline that left them out to dry - how many times did Rio and Vidic get turned like a top inside the box? There should have been more goals.
Oh - and with all of your self proclaimed knowledge, you didn't know Busquets (I love the Sky commentator "buskets" - rhymes with muskets)? He had been playing for Barca all year. An amazing career so far - Barca B Third Division champions last year (under Pep), Champions of Spain, Copa del Rey, and Europe the next. His dad played goalie for Barca.

haf a doubt in my mind as a united fan is that the man united jersey with the final embroidery is available for pre order days before the game, but will only be avail on the 26th, i think it makes no sense, as last year united also reach the final yet the moscow embroidery wasnt sold until the end of the game when united won.. does the above shows that united is losing the final? if they dun sell the shirt nw, the shirt with the final embroidery will haf no sale? it makes no sense that people will receive the shirt and wear to rome to support when the game is on the 27th, and they will receive the shirt on the 26th delivered to their hse.. so i already half expected the results of the game.. i use this as analysis is this correct?
abv is my personal view, pls correct me if i m wrong..

From my personal pt of view, the main man for this 2 events are not Xavi, its Carlos Puyol.. I think he is a good DIVER and ACTOR.. for the previous champ league, semi final against AC Milan, he dive in which Sheva did not even touch him, and referee disallow the goal wrongly.. during the final, samuel eto scored an offside goal.. even before the game, the referee was changed due to the previous wearing a barcelona shirt if i did not remember wrongly.. and in the champ league this season, they gt past chelsea via referee heavy mistakes and also against United.. Puyol was an actor again, feigning injury and frustrated ronaldo.. so i think puyol is really a diver and actor from my personal pt of view.. and barca rode to this 2 european cup by luck.. if not otherwise, it would have not reach the final..
abv is my personal view, pls correct me if i m wrong..

Mr. Bell by trying to convince us that u know something about European football i am afraid that u proved just the opposite. the young lad in midfield was Sergio Busquets son of one of our former goal keepers. We didnt just stick him into the midfield, the kid has been playing through out the season as second choice behind Yaya Toure. If u had watched one Barca la liga game all year then u would know that.
As for tactics wrong excuse, and your creaking bones of Puyol jibe. Note that our captain had Ronaldo in his back pocket during the game. Your Portuguese maestro was so frustrated that he had to resort to cheap fouls.
Another point i want u to note, is that up till the final minute of a champions league final, leading 2-0 and with a make shift defense. Barca was the attacking team. Where any other club would have thrown in a 5th and 6th defender, our defenders were creating havoc in their box, look to minute 74 to prove my point. Show more respect to the better team

Yeah, when you win the Charity Shield, World Club Cup, Carling Cup and Premier League, I think it's about time to face facts and realize that you're just not getting it done anymore.
I think Ferguson should be flattered that people like you feel he should be infallible. He gets it wrong on the day and all of a sudden united should show him the door? I think United fans should be very very very happy that you're not a Glazier.

PhBell, you know, I still think that the HD picture on your telly is a bit fuzzy. You went cheap on your connecting plugs, which is getting interference from your surround sound, whose subwoofer is underpowered, as well. Worse than that, the lager you served taste like old men's semen. It was no better than your last party, when your freaking keg went dry. The boys and I aren't coming next year (unless, of course, that well-breasted, 19 year old shows again).

First of all, you are absolutely right. Fergie's tactics were all wrong! I don't necessarily disagree with Ronaldo in the middle up top. However, I believe it speaks volumes that both Tevez and Berbatov started the match on the bench.

I don't see how anyone could be so sure about a Barca win when they so narrowly escaped the third best team from the Premier League. After the Bayern thrashing, sure, but Barca looked so mediocre against Chelsea. And then going into the final without Abidal, Alvez and Marquez, only a fool would think them to "dominate" in the manner in which they did, considering Man. U's formidable counter-attacking prowess and Barca's supposed weakness against set-pieces. Yes, Barca dominated 80 minutes of play, mainly through Iniesta and Xavi, but suppose one of those early Ronaldo scares did hit the back of the net...we easily could have seen the same lack-luster play that we saw from the Chelsea/Barca 2nd leg. Fortunately, this was not the case, and we got to see the converse; Man U. unravel under the pressure of being down an early goal.

You knew from the outset that Barca would 'get on the ball and dominate?' well, you must not have seen the barca-chelsea semifinal then.
But let's say, for the sake of argument, that United did let them control possession much like they did in last year's semifinal. United closed the spaces then and were too quick for them on the counter. I don't see why, after two semifinals where barca's finishing was completely shut down by the premiership's top two teams, that it wouldn't happen again.
However, it was a very good match and i'm happy to see Barca complete so many passes and really move the ball the length of the pitch.

All credit to beautiful Barca! They're the best team I've ever seen (80's - now). Even better than the late 80's/early 90's AC Milan, or Real when they were at their best.
Question: Any of you recall other teams that play more beautifully than Barca?

I don't know where you get off saying that Fergie should retire 'cause he's getting too old! The greatest manager the club has ever had, let alone world football has ever seen and you want to get rid of him after one mistake? I too knew we were going to lose looking at the starting lineup. 4-3-3 might work against kids (Arsenal) but you can't play mirror match against the best possession team in the world! Don't know how Fergie became sentimental all of a sudden? We played the same against Liverpool at Old Trafford and it didn't work! Anderson didn't deserve to start and we did not utilise our best players. Park warranted his spot, but considering they were missing their full-backs, we should have attacked them with 4 (Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo & Park). We were too worried by their superior midfield and forgto to play what comes best to us. 4-4-2 and plenty of width. You think it would have occurred to the Gaffer that by playing on that pitch meant we would have had more an advantage?

Posted by icenine on 06/03/2009
i agree that Fergie got his tactics wrong but to say him retiring right now might be a good idea is blind stupidity. Pep guardiola is a good coach and the treble was an amazing accomplishment but to downgrade Fergusson after the cl defeat is to be ignorant of what he and united have achieved this season and the seasons before that. United have won more silverwares than any other team in Europe for the last 20 years. Your shortsightedness and arrogance is pathetic.

Posted by Asrap on 06/03/2009
U guys are ridiculous!! Maybe Fergie did get his tactis wrong.. that open for debate. But retire? that's purely insane!
Despite losing the Champions League final, United still won 3 trophies this season. That's the same amount of trophies of EIGHTEEN (minus Chelsea) Premiership teams had managed to win in FOUR seasons. Yup, that's right, the past 4 seasons Liverpool only has 1 trophy, Arsenal ZERO, Portsmorth 1, and Spurs 1. That's how succsesful this season has been for United.
Add to the fact that Fergie is the only manager to win 3 consecutive league titles... and he repeated that again this season. So to suggest he retire is purely idiotic!!

PhB,
I for once didn't have any doubt who would be the champions of europe this time around. Barca has been the most attractive team this season and they deserved all the trophies they have won this year. I was laughin' me heart out when i heard ppl actually givin' united chance.
Have you ever considered playin' in another league? I had heard this rumor that Barca are interested in you. Could you please update me on this one as I would love to see a player with the skills and personality like you Mr. PhB to honour the mighty Catalan colours.. .

I personally feel United's tactics and player assignment was off on the night BUT that was not the only department UTD fell short.
Your comment's on SAF are at best, acidic and undeserved.
age caught to him? forgot who played where?
Please...
Even in 'failure' (at his age), you and a whole lot of premier league managers would pay, cry and probably kill to achieve what he did in this season.
That said, No excuses on the defeat, at least not now.
Let the champions bask in the glory of their victory.
The stage is theirs for now.
Congrats to Pep! Job well done.
Utd WILL be back.

You know guys, I think everyone who says Fergie lost us the game needs to really say what team they would have picked to start. It not only annoys me but it pisses the crap out of me to hear everyone say that! Barcelona won coz on that day they were a very decent side. If any of the Utd players put in an effort like they did at Arsenal, the result would have been different. They didnt show up and thats not the manager's fault. Fergie played Ronaldo upfront bcoz he knows Ronnie wont defend! Rooney and Park were on the wings to cut out the Barcelona flanks, and it worked. We got outplayed in the middle because we had no ball winners like Fletcher or Hargreaves. Simple as tht! Any other formation and the scoreline would have been a lot worse. We beat Barcelona last season playing like that, and Chelsea were unfortunate to do so using the same tactic. So please stop writing stupid obituaries!

hey "ron" you're an idiot...what is with the all the hate towards puyol? angry he stopped Ronaldo when supposedly no one did?? seriously man...I guess Ronaldo does not dive. Yes there was luck involved with Barcelona and yes some very terrible mistakes by the ref...but come on you idiot...Barcelona, other then the first 10 minutes of the match...totally killed Manchester United. The best team won. And Mr. Ball...Sergi Busquets has played all season, is son of a former goalie and came up with Guardiola...don't pretend to know more then you do. United won because their team, other then Ronaldo are inferior to Barcelona...Can you even compare a midfield of Anderson, Park and an aging Giggs with Xavi, Iniesta and whoever else is there?? Xavi and Iniesta are enough to dominate any midfield. And obviously Messi, Henry and Eto'o were better then the "vaunted" Man U defense. And I guess without 3 of the defensive starters Barcelona was alright. The team beat Man U, not the tactics!!

The fact is:
No Howard Webb (or Mike Riley, Steve Bennett, etc) = no bad refereeing decisions to help the team = no trophy for Manchester United- Simple.

Posted by yato on 06/04/2009
I am not sure what Fergies tactics were. 4-3-3, 4-4-2 ? wrong line up? What he should be critizied for is not pushing a few players forward down 2-0 with 15 minuts to play. What is the difference between a 2-0 loss or a 3-0 loss. When Barca did have problems this year it was when teams pressed them higher up the field, and took away thier wing play. Sir Alex should not take the all the blame. United players showed NO heart and flat out gave up! . In the end It looked like a cat playing with a near dead mouse! Give FC Barcalona credit. They played great football all year, and stayed true to thier style all out attacking football

One defeat (due to tactical reason) and you are calling fergie (or any other mgrs) to quit?
Also, to "shake up" a team that's just completed 3 consecutive league titles?
My 1st time reading your blog and I'm sure it'll be the last time as well.

What in the name of God are you on about? Or more to the point, what in the name of God are Soccernet playing at with this absurd column?
I just don't understand the logic of pretending that Pharrell Bell or Redcastle Town exist. Not to mention that this writer's views demonstrate that their understanding of 'sawker' is completely derelict. You offer, and I quote: "United needed the boy Ronaldo up against the creaking bones of Carles Puyol out wide."
Ronaldo fought a running battle with Puyol all game, and lost! Did you actually even watch the game?
And what is this about: "Normally when we all get together to watch a big match at someone's house, we'd get a bit lairy, have a few beers and that. Start jumping around on each other, pulling each other's trousers down..."
In all my years and the thousands of matches I have watched I have never heard of anyone behaving that way when watching football.
Please Soccernet desist from this column as soon as possible. It absolutely stinks
