Alright? How are you guys doing?
One of the great things about doing this blog for ESPN Soccernet is that there is always something going on in the world of football for me to write about.
Even when there is nothing actually going on, I'm never going to be stuck for a subject because I know you guys love to hear what Pharrell Bell has been up to - and I'm my own favourite subject! I'll never get bored of talking about the PhBell!
But seriously, there is no doubt what the major talking point of this last week has been: Manchester United winning yet another Premier League title following their nil-nil draw against Arsenal at Old Trafford at the weekend.
United are a club that divide opinion: you either love them, or you hate them. There is no middle ground with United. Half the world supports them, half the world can't stand them, and those who do neither obviously don't know anything about football.
Obviously, one thing's for sure: there is no grey area where United are concerned.
Me, I haven't really got a particularly strong opinion on United to tell you the truth. The PhBell doesn't love them or hate them, really. I'm sitting on the fence on this one.
But, in my humble opinion, and I know it means a lot to you guys, United have been the best club in Europe for the last decade.
Seven Premier League titles, three domestic cups and two (potentially three) Champions League titles since 1999. No other club can match that. And that's a FACT.
Say what you want about Alex Ferguson (go on, that's what the message boards below are there for...) but what he has done at the club has been just incredible. His teams just have this hunger and determination to win, I don't know where it comes from.
And there is no sign of Fergie retiring just yet. He's just going to go on and on and on and on, and then on some more. It's unbelievable.
It just makes you wonder why he hasn't retired already. He's won everything there is to win, earned more money than you (and probably even me) will see in a lifetime, and yet he still wants another season.
He must be soft in the head, if you ask me. I want to enjoy every minute of my retirement. I want to kick back and enjoy all the money I've worked so hard for. I do not want to have to drive into the same old football club morning after morning after morning until the day I die.
How depressing, eh?
One person who will be desperate to see the back of old Fergie will be Rafa Benitez. Judging by his recent comments when he refused to praise the United boss for the title triumph, it looks like poor Rafa can't stand the United boss.
He says he is prepared to congratulate the club for winning the Premier League, but not the manager. Now, you'll read a lot of pundits slagging Rafa off, claiming that he is showing a lack of respect and dignity and grace and all these other fancy words.
But PhBell agrees with the Liverpool manager on this one. I think that for Rafa to start praising Ferguson now, after all their bitching at each other throughout the season, that would show a sign of weakness in the Liverpool manager.
Benitez needs to send Fergie a signal to say: "You might have won the battle, pal, but the war is yet to be won."
He isn't going to send that signal by joining the rest of the footballing world worshipping on their knees at Ferguson's feet, is he? No.
Benitez has to stand firm, turn down the handshake and continue to stare his enemy in the eye, toe-to-toe. It is the only way he will get his side mentally prepared for another title challenge next season.
Pharrell Bell would do exactly the same in that situation. I think it shows a certain strength of character to be able to pass up the chance to offer congratulations to a superior opponent.
In fact, on many occasions as a player I have refused the handshake of an opposition player who has run rings around me for 90 minutes. Shaking hands with someone like that in front of 30,000 people - no chance. It's a loser's mentality if you ask me.
All that said, I want to take this opportunity to say well done to United. They are worthy winners of the Premier League this season, no doubt. They are a credit to English football.
Until next time, readers.

Interesting insight. I am trying to think rationally and analyze Rafa's thought process and his action of not congratulating SAF.
Firstly, Rafa is showing disrespect to a colleague and secondly, he is sending out a depressing signal to his own team. Making a comment like the better team did not win, he is indirectly implying that even though his team was the best, they still cannot beat Man Utd to the title. This I look at it as a person who is whimsical and is not ready for improvement. There is always room for improvement and Rafa is not inculcating that attitude into his team. On the contrary look at SAF, even after winning premier league and Champions league last year he is constantly trying to improve… That’s why SAF has been in business for the last 30 yrs and his teams are always winning (Aberdeen and Man Utd). Rafa should start concentrating on his own team more and stop complaining. LFC is a good team, but Rafa’s attitude is spoiling it

Alright dude, this one is taking it a bit far. This is an empty netter from 2 yards out, you've got to make it a little more difficult then this:
"United are a club that divide opinion: you either love them, or you hate them. There is no middle ground with United. Half the world supports them, half the world can't stand them, and those who do neither obviously don't know anything about football.
Me, I haven't really got a particularly strong opinion on United to tell you the truth."
Yes, we know you're a charachature, yes we know this is a satire, but seriously, try and make it a little harder to figure out.

Hey! What's wrong with you? You're supposed to kick the day lights out man united's players not to congratulate them. You know what? You're a disgrace to your won team mates and to Redcastle United. Find yourself a new team for next season, mate. What a knob, you stuffed my day PhaBell.....

Ugh, indeed.

Yeah Pharrell, I've never understood that jersey swapping thing either. Who wants to put on some guy's sweaty jersey after he's been running around in it for 90 minutes?
Some guy comes up to me after a game with a sweaty jersey in his hand, I'll be like, "Thanks, but no thanks"

Shaking hands with an opposition player who has just defeated you fair and square doesn't make you a loser. Refusing the handshake sure does! (By the way, you are already a loser in that game since you lost.)
Pharrell Bell, like Rafa Benitez, has clearly displayed a loser's mentality. A mentality that cannot accept defeat graciously. It stems from a character that is so weak it cannot even summons the strength necessary to extend congratulations to a superior opponent. If he has a winner's mentality, he will say, "Well done. Congrats. You win this time round but I will be back stronger." This blog is titled "This Sporting Life" but the message conveyed in this article is anything but sporting.

Pharrell,
I'm concerned for you - I really am. Surely you realise that, by siding ever so slightly with Rafa, you may be jeopardising the chances of Sir Alex putting in a bid for your services? Or have you already got the move to Real Madrid sewn up? I mean, surely they'd want an undoubted superstar like your good self ahead of a prancing Portuguese pretty boy like whatsisname!!

Dont think JamesFord gets it....who ever wrote this is trying make PhBell sound like a twit. Looks like JamesFord gets it, even if not in the way intended.
And I agree with PhBell. Even if Rafa thinks his team is the best in the universe or SAF doesnt deserve the title, he should show a bit of dignity and say well done.

errr incorrect, every loser doesn't win! ur are still a loser and you aren't winning any readers by writing this crap!

Who writes this trash? The same guy who will write it next week when you come rushing by to read it again! Ph Bell, I have said it before and will say it again, I love your blog, and love the guys commenting even more...it is amazing to see how many people around the world suffer from a lack of some sense of humour and just cant lighten up! Jeeeeez. Some dude wants a joke ''made a little harder to figure out''. Dude, there are a lot of humuor sites on the net, there must be some for geeks like you.
Back to Rafa then; I dont see why people are saying he was disrespectful, I mean, he congratulated the club meaning the players and the fans. He is within his rights not to congratulate SAF on a personal level.

Spot on Chris ! Come on PhBell more subtlety, please... ...
Then again after the numerous plonkers on here who haven't seen the satire as yet perhaps you are just trying to see how "bleedin' obvious" you have to get before even the plonkers get the idea...

well well well...
Rafa Bemitez refusing to congratulate Alex Ferguson.... it doesnt really matter does it....????
I don't think Arsene and Fergie was seeing eye to eye at times in the past... neither did Jose and Fergie...but did the media report or rather blow it out of proportion? Its thus normal.
But that aside, half the people hate them half the people love them... thats what happens to really successful teams I think
Those solid concrete facts just shows what Man Utd juz is.
Disrespect to Fergie? No offence but I think he is getting scared. He is scared that Fergie has more years to come and at the same time more titles to win. Which manager will shiver at that thought? I personally hope Fergie to continue, and get a replacement of the same nature as him.

Interesting contrast of the obvious, 'There is no middle ground... Me, I haven't really got a particularly strong opinion on United...", and the subtle, where the praise of United is some cleverly veiled critique(?) of United.

sorry mate ... but i agree with the first comment. you slack off there..
as for rafa, reacting like that really just a frustating way upon a nothing season really. but still, towards sir alex, he really should just keep his mouth shut. also, sorry to say, the war has been won. sir alex got united winning almost everything this season and rafa still ZERO.
sure, pool has been outstanding this season but no more than united. consistency, depth and mentality, all together not yet for pool. it's on thing to be able to play yer best, and another thing to be able to win. a quote "playing yer best gets u result, but winning means u are playing yer best"

shows "strength of character" or "a lack of sportmanship"???
bottomline? they were quite a few ridiculous lines in this piece...suggest you stick to writing about the toddlers soccer league...and leave sports writing to sports writers...

So you have time to write this blog, but not come back and visit me for some margaritas in the village?
I thought what we had was special Pharrel, I massaged you, cooked you breakfast, and even drove you to the clinic to take care of that nasty "infection" you gave me the night before.
And now you won't even come round for some go-go dancing? What happened to you?
Please call me soon,

The author is wrong about several points he makes. For example:
- "Benitez needs to send Fergie a signal to say:
'You might have won the battle, pal, but the war is yet to be won.'" Having been in the Premiership for 5 yrs, Benitez hasn't won any of the 5 battles for the crown - Fergie has won 3 of them during that time. And Fergie won the war a long time ago.
- "Benitez has to stand firm, turn down the handshake and continue to stare his enemy in the eye, toe-to-toe. It is the only way he will get his side mentally prepared for another title challenge next season." Even after Liverpool defeated United at OT, Benefit couldn't bring himself to look Fergie in his eyes as Fergie approached him for a handshake.
- "In fact, on many occasions as a player I have refused the handshake of an opposition player who has run rings around me for 90 minutes. Shaking hands with someone like that in front of 30,000 people." Like Benitez, the author incorrectly thinks this shows strength.

i'm also a fictional footballer in the premiere league. i'm going to start posting my blog in this one's comments section. observe:
hi. i don't exist. i have many humorous opinions about my "colleagues." to wit, footballers have a lot of money. many of them are self-involved, ignorant, and not particularly nice to be around. many of them make ridiculous sums of money which they spend on silly things. their wives are ridiculously hot, but they still cheat on them anyway.
well, i'm tired out from all this comedy writing. make sure to check back often for more brilliant satire.

In your words "Half the world supports them, half the world can't stand them, and those who do neither obviously don't know anything about football." ... then go on to say "Me, I haven't really got a particularly strong opinion on United to tell you the truth. The PhBell doesn't love them or hate them, really. I'm sitting on the fence on this one."
so that means, and I quote you, "and those who do neither obviously don't know anything about football." so why are you writing this column??
(this probably won't be printed now )

lol, Pharrell, u screwed this 1 up ("and those who do neither [support or hate United] obviously don't know anything about football. Me, I haven't really got a particularly strong opinion on United to tell you the truth." and then u giv us that trash about Benitez. something just doesnt connect in his head, its got nothing to do with psychology. the only time i dont shake hands with opposition players is wen they act very unsportingly during matches.

Shaking an opponent's hand after the game is a sign of weakness? And you call yourself an ex-sportsman? On the other hand, as you have so pointedly said yourself, you obviously don't know anything about football, or sport in general.

PhB,
You have just ruined your transfer to ManU. Sources said you 'would not' have replaced a certian Portugese Winger when he 'does not' go to Real Madrid this summer. I saw you tried those step overs in your last game and when you went down when their Centre Back breathe on you, Sir Alex was drooling.....but you ruined it when you sided with Rafa.
Anyway, I guess half the world supports you, the other half can stand you and the half who does neither obviously knows nothing about football. Yet the three halves all have extra time to respond to your blog.
Keep up the good work and I hope Rafa buys you in the summer after your glowing tribute and sells you back in January for less and then say ManU won the title because of money.

Okay let me make this clear to all you super-geniuses who clearly don't get it.
The contradiction is PURPOSEFULLY there. It is SUPPOSED to make this FICTIONAL character appear stupid. As is this entire enterprise - a FAKE blog about a BPL 'star' who plays for a FICTIONAL team called Redcastle. What it is not really SUPPOSED to do, is show up you lot as a bunch of idiots. Oh, well.
PS: PhB - Would you consider getting into politics when you retire from the game? I hear it's not much work and you get to bill taxpayers for personal stuff (apartments, prawn sandwiches, adult entertainment - you get the drift). Sounds pretty nice, eh?
 |

And still, people don't realise PhBell is satire, not to mention fictional. Soccernet, it must pain you to see how stupid some of your visitors are.
Keep up the good work PhBell, you're breaking the transfer record this summer for sure!

Cat fights between managers is a special feature of English football - the British press obviously work hard at keep them going. You certainly do not see anything comparable over here in North America whether its hockey, Canadian/American football (not soccer) or baseball. There also seems to be a much more emotional relationship between players and managers. In hockey when the players want to get rid of a coach (who occupies the same position as your managers) they make it known to the owners/senior management but basically do not pass it on to the media. I can understand the avariciousness of your media; since half of your newspapers are filled with football stuff they obviously have to come up with a lot of copy.

Best team of the decade? R.Madrid has won THREE (not two) ChampionsLeague since 1998, Barcelona has won 5 ligas and two Champion and dwarfed the very same ManU that Ferguson called his finest team ever; and did so with 4 missing defenders and Iniesta and Henry far from being healthy. And this is a FACT.
For all the fanfare about the Premier league, Madrid and Barcelona have won 5 Champions in the last 12 years for only 3 of British teams. ANd they have won all of them outclassing the opponent and without the lack ManU enjoyed in their wins againt Bayern and Chelsea.
How can you say this team is the best of the decade? I agree that ManU has been among the top five but for me it is far from a FACT that they outclassed the likes of Milan, Barcelona or Real Madrid.
To give you a fair comparison, save for Gerrard and Lampard no British midfielder will make it to the bench (let alone play) of the Spanish or italian national teams. Cesc is a bench player for Spain and that is telling.
