All this hype about Federico Macheda is really grinding my gears. Nothing gets my goat up more than some spotty-faced Jonny-come-lately grabbing all the headlines just for scoring one goal.
Seems the whole country has gone mad for this kid. People forget that he isn't the first 17-year-old to make an impact in the Premier League. People up in Leeds still talk in hushed tones about Pharrell Bell's debut at Elland Road back in 1999.
We were playing Bradford City in a league match. I came on to replace David Batty in the 65th minute, when we were 2-1 up. I remember what the gaffer shouted into my ear just before I crossed that white line: "I'm only doing this ‘cos I've got no other options. If I see you step foot in their half of the field, I'll tear you a new one at the final whistle. Don't f**k this up."
I never put a foot wrong. It was like Batty had never left the field. I kept it simple: crunching tackles from behind (they were encouraged back then), and on the rare occasions I found the ball at my feet, I always passed backwards, never forwards.
It's the short-and-simple formula that has made me the player I am today.
I felt on top of the world the night after my debut. Completely buzzing. I remember me and a group of mates went into town, thinking we'd hit a few bars, maybe go to a club, have a really big night out - problem was, we kept getting stopped by the bouncers on the door.
They'd tell us it was because we were wearing trainers, or because we didn't look 18 years old or because they "didn't like our face", but I knew it was because they recognised me and didn't want to get into trouble with my gaffer.
Of course, it didn't stop us celebrating. One of my mates knew an off-licence where he could get served, so he went and got us each a two-litre bottle of Strongbow. We took it down to the local park and got really wasted. I got a right rollicking from my old man when I got home, then puked in my waste-paper bin and slept in my clothes.
I dread to think how Macheda celebrated. A 17-year-old Italian kid? He wouldn't know what to do with himself. Probably had an extra helping of his mum's bolognaise and tiramisu. Maybe he pushed the boat out and stayed up late with a glass of limoncello, watching The Godfather.
It's a shame. But then, the foreign lads are a completely different breed to us. Sometimes I just don't get them. They can be on a completely different planet.
Take AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso for example. Now I've never been lucky enough to play against ‘The Rhino', but a couple of lads I know who played with him at Rangers told me he is a right tough old sod.
So what's he doing coming out and telling people that he thinks that footballers should be willing to take a pay-cut because of the recession? Now, I don't know how things work in Italy, sunshine, but over here it's every man for himself, right?
I don't think there is a single Pharrell Bell fan out there reading this blog who would honestly begrudge me my £25k-a-week, because they have seen how hard I've had to work to get into this position.
They've seen me going through the tough times. They saw me hit rock-bottom, sat on the bench when I played for Middlesbrough, watching that fat 'Brazilian' Doriva get picked ahead of me time and time again.
Devastation like that would be enough to drive a man insane. So when you see Pharrell Bell come through a crisis like that, you are delighted when he is finally rewarded with the sort of pay packet he deserves, right?
Gattuso should keep his gob shut. I don't know what it's like in Italy but over here, footballers have football FANS, and they are called FANS for a reason: because everyone FANtasizes about being us.
What sort of message would Pharrell Bell be sending out to the thousands of kids who idolise him if I said: "I don't want all this money. Take some of it back. I can live on £15k-a-week, it's fine. Don't worry. I'll sell one of my cars."
I'd be a laughing stock. I'd lose all the respect I have built up through years of living the flashy footballer's lifestyle. If I offered to take a pay-cut, it would break the heart of all those kids playing football in the cobbled streets outside their shabby, windows-boarded-up, two-up, two-down terraced council houses.
And Pharrell Bell isn't the sort of man to break any kid's heart.

Can't believe you still remember your debut with Leeds!! I remember when you took the pitch there was just this air at Elland, something special happened. We in The Kop knew that football would never be the same! Afterwards me and the lads went out to pull some birds but wound up getting in a massive fight with a couple of 13 year olds. In true Pharrell style we thwacked 'em proper! Don't you worry about Gattuso mate. He's washed up and knows he ain't worth it no more. I heard it from a friend of a cousin's uncles flatmates best-friends mum-in-law that tape of you playing is floating around Serie A and the I-Tals are saying if our gaffers see this Bell chap, we're out of a job. So, he's offering to take a paycut to avoid such embarrassment. Can't blame him personally, you're a right monster on the pitch. Anyway mate, keep up the good work, you're the best in England right now. After the travesty at Anfield I just hope Rafa doesn't figure out that what he needs to win trophies is you.

How true. Gattuso can shove his "economic sense" where the sun doesn't shine. We need more people like you and Daniel Sturridge, your Under-21 compatriot.

I know what Kiko Macheda WON'T be doing in 10 years time, that's for sure: he won't be writing articles about football on soccernet.com!

He also won't be getting call-ups to the English national team! Pharell has him beat all over!
Great blog; the people that think it's not funny need to loosen up a bit.

Hilarious, what's with everyone being all up tight. Writing a blog is meant to be entertaining, and I for one, was entertained.
This is the first time I've read your blog, but now I'm going to read past entries.
Thank you Mr. Bell making money and still keeping it real.

More disgraceful and embarrasing are fans that read blogs day long, then throw in their two cents as if we cared.

PhB is a true legend. Some people think that all footballers do in the off time is smell daisies and kiss puppies. PhB is just telling it like it is. Beating DJ's that don't play your tune and chasing birds is not what their stars do or don't they?
If it was a problem then when his gaffa read about the Dutch treat he would be fined and dropped. But all of the team probably did something like that. Go on PhB......
Maybe the LA galaxy can sign you up as a replacement for DB23 (and DB don't stand fo Dueche Bag).....

Heard about this on the Pod & thought i'd check it out.
Q1)"Pharell Nell" Who?? :s
Q2) Is any of what he's written supposed to funny in a sarcastic way? Otherwise you sound like you've got your head in a place without sunshine!
Q3) Why is this baboons blog being promoted instead of some of the great writings by Fans!?.
 |
Posted by andrew cook on 04/09/2009
no one knows who you are so stop talking like they should. also, your blogs are crap and despite the press being over-saturated with macheda you have wasted a post on the subject with your terrible writing that has no relevance. a post disparaging the macheda stories would do well to include how such little fanfare was put on ryan gosling for everton when he scored a similar goal in the merseyside derby. the press focused on the victory instead of this scrappy new talent despite him and macheda playing the same role. do go away.

Nah this blog is genius. It's damn funny and still talks about relevant (recent) events. The folks who can't stand it shouldn't read it. For the rest of us who have a sense of humor or appreciate the wicked satire it's quite entertaining.
So it's on soccernet big deal, just makes it better, after all they didn't try and hide it in the real news section, it's a blog after all.
I hope Juve drops all this "Diego" stuff and go after Pharrel Bell! At least Ranieri will be able to half communicate with the lad.

It's people like him that more people in my neck of the woods will take an interest in the game. They will probably back on Manchester United just to bust my chops. Anyway I dont really care if it does, but i hate being 1 of 3 dudes the other is Jesus V, and Japanese Shu who actually give a damn about the most beautiful sport on the planet. As for Pharreal you "keep it real" finally some edge on soccernet.

Wait, did someone actually call this "satirical"? Wow. I guess the bar must be really low.
ESPN is supposed to be staffed with journalists. One would expect these journalists would have some requisite literary skills.
This blog seems to shatter those expectations.
I'm not insulted or offended, it's just that the idea behind this is quite shallow and the execution is terrible

Sorry, but I cannot understand why you cannot understand the joy which a 17 year old boy has bought to football. Perhaps you should consider the absolute importance of the goal he scored, and the composure and skill needed to score it. If that shouldn't be commended in football, then I don't much care for popular opinion.
The lad did brilliantly well on his debut and created one or two chances for team mates and I think he is every bit deserving of the praise.
Why on Earth anyone would want to surround such a demonstration of good attacking football is beyond me, especially at a time where football is dominated by negative teams who are more concerned with not losing than getting a result.

It's really terrible some fellas don't have a sense of humour in the slightest. The vox pop on the blog is a mixed bag, but one couldn't help but agree with sensible folks such as Jim, Jeremy and the Juve Fan( I do know its another made-up character, this guy ).
Now my name doesn't begin with a J, but I can and will openly admit that this is good stuff. And for all those who think they can do better, I encourage you to apply at Soccernet to replace "Pharell Bell" and serve up something supposedly more intriguing.
"Who the hell is Pharell Bell ?" might appeal to you as a half-decent excuse for a mild protest of sorts. I have two options laid out for you haters :
1. Stop reading the blog. Quite simply, read all that you think appeals to your senses more. After all, this is lame, right ?
2. Read on. Admit you love it and come back every week. You toot your own horn if you say that this is pathetic writing, yet read it as soon as it comes out.
Pick one and maybe it'll help.

Pharrell, you sound like a moron. In every other job performers get fired for not doing well (ie "winning"). No, only in football will a player force a new contract just for a pay rise and then sulk and pout in order to get the trade they want a year later.
You want to sound/act intelligent, realize that paycuts may be necessary at some clubs, and not necessary at others. Would you rather your club folds and ceases to exist because they can't pay the wage bills? Sure, financial success in football is very closely entwined with winning trophies, which shows you as a player did a good job.
So, in conclusion, learn to write about something important or remotely interesting other than your unwillingness to take a pay cut, even when it's in theory.

I am shocked by how many people indignantly post that Pharrel does not exist. It seems only a marginal football fan would not pick up on the fact that Pharrel is a communicative avenue through which analysis is fabricated. Obviously he is an exaggerated archetype of pompous self-diluted modern footballers.
The critics who say this blog is poorly written fail to realize that it is supposedly written by an uneducated professional athlete, not a journalist. I cannot relate to the outright hostility toward Pharrel or soccernet. Take it for what it is and join in the joke, or gtfo and go read some intellectually stimulating analysis elsewhere. Lighten up and relax.

Well, i can say you have the right to earn your money and say whatever you have to say about gattuso. But MACHEDA is an up coming star that had a great debut. He went in and played freely. Not like you who was used as a scapegoat and told not to go behind the half like. That is slavery. lol

please tell me that this isn't real... if so, a guy who I've never at all heard of talks about himself in the 3rd person as if he is Michael Jordon... of course MJ is from another country, so I'm sure there would be some not-too-clever racist remark to be made...
The bottom line, in case soccernet is thinking, ooooh, we fooled another one, is that this blo was just CRAP and it does, by the way, resemble some of the illiterate bigotry which litters football circles enough that it simply adds to those idiots even if it was meant to make fun of them...
yuck ESPN, shame on you...

Whoever you are, Mr. Bell, I'm extremely amused by how self-righteous you sound and crappy the blog is. The phrase "It's so bad, it's good" probably applies here. People who criticised this might be thinking this everytime they keep coming back to read: "What kind of crap is he doing to serve now? Crapalagnaise?"
This is all probably meant to be a joke of some kind, but you have to take note of how sensitive people can be here too. Voicing your opinions is fine and all, but perhaps a little discretion should be practised?

sorry, but Pharrell Bell smacks Macheda's posterior anyday. You go on crunching good son. And plow through the young kid if Fergie brings him on against Redcastle Town. That will teach him some manners and send him back to mamma mia for a bit of lovin.

Is anybody stupid enough to believe that this is real? Apparently yes.
If you don't like it don't read it, but don't jump on your little self righteous band wagons and start defending spoilt brats who earn obscene amounts of money and carry on as if they are the greatest thing ever put on this earth. Keep up the good work PhB, worth a laugh every blog!

PB, I must thank you once more for the visit you made dowm here in Kenya. I can assure you that no other face is as famous down here as yours...except for the famous Kenyan son, Barack Obama of course. The kids idolise you. Everybody who is an English fan is saying how much you should be in the national team and not the diva, Becks. England is full with long-passes players, Stevie G, Fat Lamps et al, what they need is a David Batty or a Gattuso. No one is better at that role than you in the whole of Europe at the moment. It is only a matter of time man, before you get that call up...you will be coming to Africa next year man, to South Africa for the WC.

Hey PB, is it true that you dribbled through 13 opponents (10 players + their keeper twice + the biased referee) to score your debut goal?
I can't believe these people who keep doubting your ability as a footballer. After all, your goal last weekend, while not as amazing, speaks volumes about your talent. Fabulous 70-yard effort with the keeper still rooted to the spot when the ball rocketed in and knocked the front teeth out the poor bloke sitting behind their goal.
