I've got to admit, I was a little surprised to see Ryan "Giggsy" Giggs pick up the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award.

Not that I don't think Giggsy has been a great player over the last decade or so - just that he hasn't been a great player this season. He's only started 12 games and scored one goal - what's that all about?

I mean, I've started 25 league games this season and scored twice (the Dubious Goals Panel have finally backed down over that deflection after I got my lawyer to threaten them with legal action).

I'm not saying I'll ever be as successful as Giggs, but surely I'm a more worthy candidate for the award this season? It's certainly a topic for discussion, I think. Perhaps you guys should bring it up on your local radio phone-in show.

We're not really supposed to tell anyone who we voted for, but I can't see the harm in doing so now that the results have been revealed. Personally, for me, in my opinion, Robinho at Manchester City got my vote.

Just think how well the little lad has done: coming over here from a foreign country, not speaking a word of the lingo, settling in to a new club. He's joint-third top-scorer in the league and has been virtually unplayable at times.

We had a terrible time against him at the City of Manchester Stadium; made me look like a right numpty with all those step-overs. I gave him one or two real hard kicks in the shins, too, and he never said a word to the ref. I respect him for that.

I'll tell you one thing, though: I agree what Giggsy said about the PFA award being definitely the most important award that a player can win, because it is voted for by all the other top Premier League stars, like myself.

Let me let you in on a little secret: those awards voted for by journalists, the players really couldn't care less about. If I can be brutally honest, we don't care in the slightest who some boozy, washed-up, bitter-and-twisted hack thinks is the best player in the Premier League.

And the fans' awards - ha! No disrespect guys, and we really do appreciate you turning up every week and handing over your hard-earned money, but you don't really know as much about football as you think you do.

"Why didn't Pharrell Bell pass to him? Why didn't Pharrell Bell make that tackle? Why was Pharrell Bell caught so out of position?"

It's a different game when you're sat up high in the stands. I bet it looks real easy. It's impossible for people like you, who have never played the game at the top level, to understand the skill and intelligence of what goes on down on the pitch.

You see a guy score 25 goals a season and think that he's the best player. But Pharrell Bell sees all the hard work done by the other 10 players to allow that lucky little crap-house all the glory.

To tell you the truth, it gets a bit annoying. I'm out there, busting my guts, doing all the ugly work in front of the back four; kicking the opposition's star player in the calf over and over again until he doesn't fancy it any more.

And what's the most reward I get for all my hard work? Yellow card after yellow card, and a disciplinary hearing at the FA.

Meanwhile, the striker gets all the headlines. The fans are chanting his name and making up pretty little songs for him, he gets offered a new, improved contract every six months, and all the women falling at his feet.

It's genuinely not fair. What makes it even harder for me to take is that I was actually a striker as a teenager - until some coach at the Leeds United Academy told me I didn't have enough pace and suggested if I couldn't become a decent midfielder, he'd have to let me go.

What an idiot that coach was. I should Not enough pace? How much pace has Peter Crouch got? Or Marlon Harewood? Or Emile Heskey? Absolutely none, and they've all done okay for themselves.

Okay, Crouch, Harewood and Heskey haven't really got fans singing their names, or women falling at their feet - but I bet they've all got better contracts than I have.

If I have one single regret in my life, it's that I didn't tell that coach at Leeds to shove his suggestion up his jacksy. I should have been a striker. I should have fans singing my name. I should be winning awards. I should be earning £125k a week.

Had it not been for the utter stupidity of that academy coach, it might have been Pharrell Bell at that ceremony at the weekend, all smart in my best suit, picking up the PFA award for recognition of a lifetime's success as a top Premier League footballer.

Had I ignored that coach, Pharrell Bell might have been Ryan Giggs. Decisions like that one that define your life, I suppose.

Absolutely agree. I was very surprised Giggs won Player of the year award. He did not start enough game to earn that award. If he start 12 games, havent get a single goal and won the award, i bet Torres will won World Player of the Year award ( considering he been injured a lot earlier of the season but yet keep scoring when he come back to the Livepool Team).

Posted by Ron Lim on 04/27/2009

1st of all, to pick up the award need consistency and produces differneces in a game, look at giggs hw he played again chelsea and subdue ballack?

2ndly, tt goal of his, for a left footer to score with a right foot is nt easy.

3rdly, he is an under rated winger, he deserves better and more personal accolades.

4thly, u need to carry and bring ur team fwd in games, robinho is inconsistence and doesnt perform well all the time.

5th, giggs excel in every of his appearance this season. more over, he is the most decorated player in the bpl as well as surpassing record appearances for united.. reaching to 800 soon.

Posted by IHeartRedcastle on 04/27/2009

You might have been Ryan Giggs, or you might have been Alan Smith. Chin up, man, we love you just how you are. Besides, if you were striker, we wouldn't have Wendell Higginbotham, right? Those five goals he's scored this season would be in the back of our net instead!

Posted by Usman on 04/27/2009

Ryan has had to adapt to life as a part time central midfielder and part time striker, as well as his usual left wing role. from all 3 position he has heavily influendced games, and is now the main creative bit in the man utd wheel.

Ryan not a worthy winner because of 12 starts? He's not 21 any longer to start & play 50games a season. He comes on when necessary, does his job wherever asked and influences the game in our favour.

He is a worthy winner, longetivity, loyalty, his starts, apperances, and above all his dedication to football as a professional.

"im a more worthy winner?", you dont know the half of it mate.

Posted by Ed on 04/27/2009

Did you really make your debut in 1999 for Leeds Untied v Bradford City? Because I checked the match information and David Batty was never replaced in that match. So, what's the deal Mr Bell? Though I do like the blog, just trying to solve the great mystery.

Posted by RedCastleLifer on 04/27/2009

PhB, I am always your strongest supporter. I cheer your name beyond the last whistle. But, I feel glad in Giggs taking the award. I mean, you were heralded as a young player, are now widely considered one of the best midfielders in the world who plays for the greatest club ever, and you're in your prime. Giggs had all of this too. You know what happened? He didn't win the PFA Award. He won trophies. That's you PhB. No doubt mate. You'll be rolling in the trophies, medals, and birds in no time. Then, as you enter the twilight of your career and are leading Red Castle to a quintuple, the other players will finally recognize you and cheer you for all you've done. By that time I'm sure you'll have at least two Nobel prizes, 3 supermodel ex-wives, and 10 or so trophies you've collected as well as a World Cup title and Golden Boot. It's your destiny, you're PhB!! I'm a bit hurt to hear you say you get no songs, are we not loud enough? I'll get on the lads and you'll hear your name sung loud!

Posted by AB on 04/27/2009

Giggs really did not deserve to win the award...1 goal and 8 assists is just not good enough for a winger to win the pfa player of the year...someone like frank lampard who is leadin in the assists column and has also scored more than 10 goals was a better candidate..

Posted by Anonymous on 04/27/2009

u suck...don even think of comparing urself to giggs or any epl stars

Posted by amamasi ugonna on 04/27/2009

let's call a spade a spade.12 starts and one goal is not exactly player of the season statistics.arsenal's arshavin by virtue of the match at anfield alone has done more than gigg's entire season.it would have been better if it was labelled pfa poty sentimental awards.if i had a veto it'd go to vidic, torres, gerrard or robinho.this years awards will surely put a stain on the entire pfa player's awards.

Posted by ryan pigsy on 04/27/2009

PhB...grand fan of your blog...tell me do you think your old team Leeds United will get promoted to the League Championship ? - would you consider taking a pay cut to return to Elland Road?...especially if Red castle get relegated?....

Posted by andrewfcook on 04/27/2009

we get it. you're ironically hilarious. now write something worth reading in detail or practice football a bit more. either way you are a waste of space on a site that needs improving.

What a idiot........

Posted by pharrell phanatic on 04/27/2009

I hear Pharrell just missed out on being nominated for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award. If you look at the stats, he started twice as many games as Giggsy with twice as many goals. He's faster than Heskey. Better looking than Rooney. Actually now that I think of it, he looks like Rooney's and Tevez's love child...have to stop typing now, that thought just made me throw up in my own mouth.

Posted by afico on 04/28/2009

stop being cocky. are you jealous that the 35 years old footballer from manchester united won that award? just because he started 12 league games and scored one doesnt mean he dont deserved it. he deserve it more than anybody does. he's been in the game more than you do. so yeah. just shut the hell up. anyway who are you ? have you play for A club for near 800 times. play yoour game. i suggest you you follow his footstep. EVERYONE SINGLE SOUL SHOULD IDOLISE GIGGS! :D He's just the best. WHO THE HELL ARE YOU PHb? you made your debut on 1999? ouhh gosh.. thats the year giggs and mates won treble. all hail giggs and united. im not being biased though.

Posted by Anonymous on 04/28/2009

c'mon bro lighten up a little. I would assume your peers respect Giggs enough to give this award more as a lifetime achievement than anything he did this year. But you are 100% correct about your job. All the work and none of the credit. It's where every game is decided and, for the educated fan, it's the position most respected. Love all the guts you show on the pitch. Just keep your head up and know that your teammates are the only ones who matter.

Posted by uglyken on 04/28/2009

go on dreaming... and collect your paycheck. Coz all you ever do is to dream about how great you are.

u such an inconsistent writer. Even in one single article..

i used to like ur reports but this one is bad Go and hide ur face. u would rather win an award for the best Nonsense!!
Wake up man!!Get a hold of urself before it's too late!! How can u talk like this on somebody like Ryan Giggs??? He's one of the best footballers of all time!! So think a little before you write something PAL!!!

Posted by HankyPanky on 04/28/2009

Pharell Bell you are the best player not only in the premier league but YOU ARE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD.. Period !!! Don't know how could your fellow professional over look a naturally gifted and talented player like you for giggs.. I'm utterly disappointed by this.. Hopefully we'll see you being acknowledged for your tru potential.. :D

Posted by Njabulo masuku on 04/28/2009

Get a life you bitter under achiever! You come here and trash other footballers instead of trying to improve your own game. It's just appalling how you use this platform to vent out your frustrations at being what you really are- a sore& miserable looser!

Posted by Anonymous on 04/28/2009

This award is a big "sod YOU" to all the hard working players of the league.
for crying out loud, even lucas leiva would have been a more worthy winner than giggs....

Posted by CR7 on 04/28/2009

If us "hacks" know nothing about the game and reckon that the player who scores the most goals is the player of the season then why did you vote for a crappy brazilian as your favourite player? Just because he is the third highest goal scorer? You PB are the biggest hack of all...

Posted by Hmmp on 04/28/2009

Pharrell Bell Bill who?!?!!? You dont deserve to put you name in the same sentence as Giggs..

Posted by WorldNumberOneTwoThreeCR07 on 04/28/2009

42 goals Bell, FORTY-TWO, not 25. Tell Higginbotham or any other stupid Redcastle to top that. But as a very intelligent footballer, I like to support that Phil Bell is right about one thing - these statistics are not everything. Giggs has played super in very important games for Manchester this whole season so just 12 start and 8 assist and 1 goal is not the full story. I am too lazy but please you jobless guys go ahead and check out successful passes etc if you want good statistics. Even if people beat him there, it is about how much impact he has made full season, statistics is not the full story as i say before. And about that 125000 pay packet Bell, keep dreaming. Ha, ha.

Posted by bars77777 on 04/28/2009

ummm peter crouch definitely has women falling at his feet. isnt he dating gemma atkinson? yea have you seen what she looks like?

Posted by Giggs on 04/28/2009

Pharrel Bell,

I am not going to accept the award. Or, possibly, I will accept it on your behalf, seeing that you, since your 1999 debut, have inspired me to become the player that I am today. In fact, your very debut prompted my spectacular performances that season that led to the treble.

Posted by Ph.B in Football on 04/28/2009

Clearly then even Footballers are dazzled by their highly talented and feared rivals - giggs, robinho, gerrard etcetera enough to vote for them in the PFA. its not just Hacks and Fans. but then, You have told us of your devotion to the newspapers and what they say.

Posted by DA86 on 04/28/2009

Firstly Giggs won the award because he has been the most consistently overlooked player for the award over almost the last 2 decades. Secondly the spelling in these comments is terrible, if you are going to post your thoughts at least use proper grammar and spelling. Thirdly, who the hell is Pharrell Bell and how can someone who is clearly a journalist, as a real professional would never admit to actually trying to kick the legs out from under another player. Which leads me to my last point, if you are going to try and write stuff like this at least make it entertaining, this is some of the worst writing i've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous on 04/28/2009

I guess most of you got PhB wrong, all he is trying to say is Giggs is not worthy to be PFA player of the year. He has started less games this year to earn the accorlade, consistency over a period of time is a bit tough than over a short period of time (12 starts the whole season is just too little).

For sure Giggs has been one of the great players but to be honest guys he dosnt deserve this award.

If there was a award given every 10 years for sure nobody would be complaining if Giggs won it cause there has been some consistency in his career BUT FOR SURE NOT PFA PlAYER OF THE YEAR.

Posted by Jocker on 04/28/2009

Nice satrical article from a joker. had fun reading it. It would have been better if you were a real player. Now that would have made the headline news like lamps

Posted by PWood on 04/28/2009

When a season is made up of 38 games, how is it you can say the best player is the one who started 12? If it's efficiency you are talking about, wouldn't Mancheda be a better choice - no one has had a bigger impact for so little time. No one.

I understand the longevity and cult hero and great player status for Giggs - I support most of it. But it isn't an award for Best Player over the past 20 years. It's player of the year. This year only. And there were many players who were much much better than Giggs.

Add to that the nominees were primarily Manchester United, this round of PFAs seemed to be the media's wish to fawn over the Red Devils rather than look at the game as a whole.

Posted by mattie on 04/28/2009

PhB... i think you voted for him... he might have had only 12 starts and one goal... but.. hes done all the things you mentioned you did.... hes tracked back... defended... kicked some shins too this season.... and hes done it without the limelight ever since beckham stole the lights from everyone... hes the unsung... like you... i think you voted for him...

Posted by Changara on 04/29/2009

Real PB, I must say that as much as I hate Man Nyoo, I think Giggsy is one of the best football players ever to grace the field. I really dont care whether he plays two matches or none at all, he should have won the award many many time in his long career but was never voted because some goody goody kid had come up the ranks from God knows where, did some few step overs on the ball and had everybody eating from their hands, disgusting. Its is about time he was recognised for a great player that he is. I will give him a winners medal in the world cup, I dont care if Wales dont even qualify for the world cup. As for you Real PB, you have time on your side, these awards will be coming your way soon, with the form you are in, it is only a matter of time.

you might need a another couple 35 years to have the instinct, the calibre and the influence of ryan giggs on the pitch man!
you should be ashamed of your self...i dont need to compliment giggs for his work...just watch the games he played

Posted by Johnny Deformed on 04/29/2009

Giggs as Player of the Year? Lame, just lame.

The argument that he's been a great servant, a great pro, he's played 800 games and won everything holds no water. He's been given medals for all his cup and league wins, like everyone else who wins trophies. The award for Player of the Year is for exactly that - player of the YEAR. Clearly, by ANYONE'S standards, Giggs has not been the best player in the Premier League this year. If people wanted to give him some kind of sentimental award, then invent a Lifetime Achievement award, named after him, give it to him when he retires and then reprise it from time to time for legendary servents of whichever club.

And to those who say it's in recognition of the years he sadly missed out, what about Vidic? Will he ever realistically have a chance of winning it again? Unlikely. So this pity award robbed a genuine contender this year. Will he be sentimentally awarded a player of the year trophy when he's 35 and has played 6 games in a season?

Posted by ajay sammy on 04/29/2009

Giggs - right then, i cant see this at all, but as for the fact that the entire selection ( the PFA team) what is anelka doing there - umm any one heard of this kid... um... arshavin or for that matter TEVEZ. look at goals per full start app. compare to subbed app. goals, we see that these players are progressing at rates, heeding their ages, not to mention the importance , the class and the effects of these goals... and we speak of the least important thing in football- goals. Heart and Influence - that in a nut shell is the name of our game... think about it. Anelka is a poacher, yes hes got the speed, but how often has He tuened a match on its feet?
i'll just say this - in 22 minutes a team scored 5 goals after conceeding 2 in 52 or so. then a sub is made and the game in inveted just by the heart and influence of the player... what does a goal mean ... (howard webb) if u are the best you will win... always

Posted by LFC 4EVER on 04/29/2009

First of all, I agree with the fact that Giggs has not been the best player this year and that the award is for this YEAR. One thing though, some of the comments above say Pharell Bell has been in great form, will do great things..blah,blah,blah. What i want to know is which league does this guy play for... never heard of redcastle in the Premier league, coca cola, league 1 or league 2. Unless redcastle is some sort of town's weekly football with some 5 teams or something. And secondly, "We had a terrible time against him at the City of Manchester Stadium; made me look like a right numpty with all those step-overs. I gave him one or two real hard kicks in the shins, too, and he never said a word to the ref. I respect him for that." So exactly how did he play against City? Fifa 09? PES 2009?

Posted by dmac on 04/30/2009

Is it just me, or are most of the commenters here extremely slow on the uptake?

Seems like a lot of you think Pharrell Bell is a real person and not a parody of the over-hyped, over-paid modern footballer...

Don't you people get it? It's parody...comedy...meant as a commentary on the game...There is no Red Castle United....There is no Pharrell Bell - just some sportswriter pretending and doing a damn fine job of it...

My favorite line: "Personally, for me, in my opinion..."

Posted by PhB rox my world on 05/01/2009

Posted by MRH 02 on 05/01/2009

Its funny reading all the responses from the Man U fans.. they've taken your attack on Giggs personally!

But look, we all know Giggs has been a great player for a long, long time. We all know he's the most decorated player ever.. or whatever. But the PFA Player of the year award should go to the best player this season.

And I'm sorry but that isn't Giggs. Robinho, Gerrard, or Lampard should have won the award. Plain and simple.

Posted by tee on 05/01/2009

who the hell is pharell bell??

Posted by PJ on 05/01/2009

Doesn't matter what you think. The real EPL players voted, and felt that Giggs deserved the trophy. He's played exceptionally in all the games he has started in and been subbed into.
A players worth is not just based on how much he ran or scored or tackled. Its based on what his presence on the field does to the team, the fans, the gaffer, the coach and the league.
There are no rules that say that you have to start x number of games to be Player of the Year.
The players that voted that Ryan Riggs's contribution to the game was more than what torres, gerrard, ronaldo, rooney or vidic brought to the table.

Life is unfair for people like us who feel for a club more then any ordinary player can and still don't have the skill to play for it. You are such ungrateful guy, you disrespect your team mates, your coaches, your rivals and your own life. And you deem yourself fit to win a PFA award.

Ryan Giggs would have deserved it if he's not a cheat. That freekick 'goal' in Lille France a few years back (in the Champions League) when the French was still busy arranging the wall has made me lose all respect for him as a player and a man.

This article does try hard, but it really isn't clever. If you want to see what you should be aiming for look at Robbo Robson on BBC Sport, which is funny, and informative too.. I do love how many people truely think this article is true though - maybe there are enough really dumb people out there to make this a success...
And one other thing - "Had I ignored that coach, Pharrell Bell might have been Ryan Giggs. Decisions like that one that define your life, I suppose. "
Ryan Giggs has been a midfield player for his entire career - firstly on the wing and then more recents in the centre of midfield... C'mon man that's poor... As such a large and important sport broadcaster, espn should really be doing better than this article shows it up as!
