Today’s match-up against West Bromwich Albion is another opportunity then for the battered Sunderland players to turn things around. One point from the last 21 tells its own story, and injuries have been a big factor. A win would be great for morale, to end this miserable losing streak, but since Roy Hodgson started applying his managerial experience to this week’s opponents they have proved “hard to beat”. A win for West Brom. would give them a double over the Black Cats; that disappointing early 0-1 reverse at the Hawthorns was the Cats’ first defeat of the season.

Team selections shows that Bruce has lost patience with the January signings Muntari and Sessegnon. They are undoubtedly classy players, but they have not yet fitted in to the system at the SSOL since their arrival coincided with this winless streak. The teams for today’s clash are:

Sunderland: Mignolet, Onuoha, Mensah, Turner, Bardsley, Elmohamady, Malbranque, Cattermole, Richardson, Welbeck, Gyan. Subs: Gordon, Ferdinand, Zenden, Henderson, Muntari, Sessegnon, Colback.
West Brom: Carson, Reid, Olsson, Meite, Shorey, Thomas, Scharner, Mulumbu, Brunt, Odemwingie, Cox. Subs: Myhill, Cech, Morrison, Vela, Fortune, Tamas, Jara.
Referee: Peter Walton (Northamptonshire)

This is a vital game, and I am pleased to see Onuoha back in defence, and the midfield of Elmohamady, Malbranque, Cattermole and Richardson looks up to today’s task, with the ex-Man Utd. player all set to make an impact, it would be great if he can add to his goal tally today. The fans have been hurting, we just need 3 points today, and to be honest we don’t care about the performance, but obviously 5-0 would be good! For one I would be happy with a 93rd minute own goal or a lucky deflection, as long as the team deliver the win we all want to see.

Wow, they blew it again and the majority of the 41,000 crowd went home very upset. They were in the game but you could just see West Brom. were up for it a little more.

Sunderland only have themselves to blame. Steve was going on about confidence but it is part of his job to get the players up for the game. Confidence is a big factor. The players need to do their part also and give 110% in the final games of the season. I can't believe we are talking about the posibility of relegation, i can only hope they turn it around in the next game!

About
Lars Knutsen Lars Knutsen was born in Sunderland of Norwegian parents across the Wear from the SSOL back when shipbuilding not car manufacture was the city’s main industry. His first game was in 1968 and he has followed the Black Cats since then, with great memories of the 1973 FA Cup. He hopes the “yo-yo” days are over and defines supporting a team by whether the result affects your mood (but maybe not in the way portrayed in the book “Fever Pitch”!) so has been cheerful recently. He endured school in Newc**tle, has a Ph.D. in Chemistry, a Professorship at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, and works in the Pharma industry as a consultant Medicinal Chemist.
