Hamburg defender Guy Demel claims he is wanted by Sunderland and one other English club. AC Milan are also chasing the Ivory Coast international, according to the 28-year-old.

"I know about the interest (from Sunderland),'' Demel, who is currently at the African Nations Cup in Angola, said in an interview with the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper. "I also know that AC Milan and another English club would like to sign me.

"But, I am still a Hamburg player. I have felt very content in all my years in Hamburg and continue to be part of this team.''

Asked how much longer he would be at Hamburg, Demel replied: "That I don't know. First Hamburg have to sort things out with Sunderland. Before that I can not negotiate anything. Hamburg know that an offer will soon come.''

Demel joined Hamburg in 2005 from Borussia Dortmund, having spent a year with Arsenal in 2000-01.

He added: "If the club should really decide to let me go, then it is also perhaps the time to go. It is difficult at the moment to sort everything out on the telephone. I am first and foremost concentrating on the African Nations Cup. After that we will see what happens.''

Meanwhile, Sunderland defender Russell Anderson has had his contract terminated by mutual consent. The Scotland international has been beset by injuries since moving to the Stadium of Light from Aberdeen in 2007.

The 31-year-old had made over 300 appearances during a ten-year spell at Pittodrie but was limited to a single substitute outing for the Black Cats against Wigan in 2007.

About
Lars Knutsen Lars Knutsen was born in Sunderland of Norwegian parents across the Wear from the SSOL back when shipbuilding not car manufacture was the city’s main industry. His first game was in 1968 and he has followed the Black Cats since then, with great memories of the 1973 FA Cup. He hopes the “yo-yo” days are over and defines supporting a team by whether the result affects your mood (but maybe not in the way portrayed in the book “Fever Pitch”!) so has been cheerful recently. He endured school in Newc**tle, has a Ph.D. in Chemistry, a Professorship at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, and works in the Pharma industry as a consultant Medicinal Chemist.
