Sunderland

Sunderland kept up their impressive start to the season with a comfortable win over a poor Hull City team last weekend. But, will Steve Bruce's decision to get rid of so many squad players be one that he comes to regret?

Bruce let a number of players leave in the final days of the transfer window and failed to land some of his targets. Despite Sunderland's first XI being arguably the club's strongest in some years, the squad looks very thin.

Once suspensions and injuries begin to take effect, I'm concerned that our squad will not be able to cope, especially in the central of midfield.

Lee Cattermole and Lorik Cana have been a revelation as a central midfield partnership. Both players are aggressive, determined and tough in the tackle, leading to the inevitable flurry of bookings.

Both players were booked against Hull and now have five bookings between them already. If either player was to be suspended, Sunderland would struggle to replace them.

At the moment we have six quality midfielders. As well as Cana and Cattermole, there's Keiron Richardson, Steed Malbranque, Andy Reid and the emerging Jordan Henderson. Other than Cana and Cattermole, the midfield have limited defensive attributes and could be bullied, as last season proved. I also think that six midfielders for a Premier League campaign is not enough. However, Bruce has used Frazier Campbell on the right of midfield.

The decision to move on Grant Leadbitter and Teemu Tainio to Ipswich Town and Birmingham City respectively, was a surprise. Although Leadbitter had been linked away from the club and probably thought that moving on from his hometown club would create more first team opportunities, the decision to send Tainio on loan to Birmingham was the biggest shock.

He's probably the best option to replace a suspended Cana or Cattermole. However, Tainio's injury problems are well documented and his availability would never be guaranteed. He returned from international duty with Finland injured so Bruce's decision to send the player out on loan could be justified.

As well as Leadbitter, Roy Keane raided his old club for Carlos Edwards. The right winger never really made the step up to the Premier League after making such an impact in the Championship-winning season of 2006/7. A number of injuries, including a broken leg, didn't help Edwards in his attempt to get back in the team.

At the back, the decision to sell double-winning player of the year, Danny Collins to Stoke City was a shock. Collins' adaptability and determined displays made him an excellent player to have in the squad. With George McCartney injury prone, Collins' ability to left-back was called upon on numerous occasions.

Keiron Richardson filled in at left-back against Hull after McCartney picked up an injury on international duty. Although Richardson played well, his defending was rarely called upon against a poor Hull side.

The introduction of Paulo da Silva at left-back could be seen as Collins' direct replacement and could even dislodge McCartney in the position.

The defence also welcomed two new additions against Hull. John Mensah made his debut as a second half substitute, replacing Phil Bardsley at right-back. What the Ghanaian lacks in height he more than makes up for in build and settled into the game quickly.

As well as Mensah, Michael Turner also made his debut against former club, claiming the fourth goal in the 4-1 win. The signing of Turner for an initial £6million could turn out to be a bargain.

The Hull fans worshipped Turner and he's been touted as a future England international. A back four of Turner, Anton Ferdinand, Mensah and da Silva looks strong and they didn't looked troubled against Hull. I hope they gel quickly and are able to take a step up against stronger opposition.

I do think that Sunderland need to buy a full-back despite no lack of defenders in the squad. With the exception of Bardsley and the injured McCartney, the rest of the defence are considered more comfortable at centre-back.

Lucas Neill has been strongly linked to the club but his wages have proven to be a stumbling block. I do think Neill would improve the squad but, despite being a free agent, I'm not sure he'd be worth the amount of wages being mooted. Also, the transfer of Wigan Athletic left-back, Maynor Figueroa, collapsed and could be revived in the January transfer window.

I think that we'll strengthen the squad, particularly in midfield, in January. Despite the squad looking small I do think we'll cope until then and Bruce's selling of fringe players have been justified. Players such as Leadbitter, Edwards and Tainio were never really going to get into the first team when everyone was fit and moving them on was best for everyone concerned.

Roy Keane bought in bulk and left the club with a huge squad and wage bill. Bruce has been ruthless in sorting the wheat from the chaff. Only time will tell whether some of the chaff could have come in handy when the fixtures come thick and fast and injuries and suspensions begin to occur.

Bruce's excellent start and promising signings have eased some of the worriers, including me, and I think we'll cope. However, it'll be interesting to see how we cope without some of that bite in the central midfield.

Both Mensah and Anton Ferdinand are capable of playing a midfield role - Mensah's played there for Ghana a few times and would be a straight swap for either Cana or Cattermole.

On paper, yes, the squad looks thin - but Saturday's performance from Kieran Richardson displays the quality of players we have invested in. The new squad is full of versatile footballers who have all the ball skills but are capable of covering other positions - be it for 20 secs whilst a full back bombs forward or 6 weeks when a hamstring tears.

Worries are understood, but you've gotta trust Bruce a bit more - he's cleverer than he is pretty... ;)

Nothing to worry about Allen, Steve Bruce will lead Sunderland to great success. Moreover, small squad also got their own benefits in term of wage bills and dressing room harmony. As a Sunderland fan, I just hope that those 6 midfielders won't be plagued by injuries. Anyway, if problems are aroused regarding the number of players in the squad, I believe Steve Bruce will out hunting more big name players to Stadium of Light in January. With this great start of the season continue till winter, no wonder there'll be more people jump on the Black Cat bandwagon.

My mate works at the academy and Collins told Bruce very publicly that he was Sunderland's player of the year and would not move to a full back position when asked. Therefore Bruce had no choice than to sell a player who was not willing to play in another position to help the team.

I couldn't agree with you more on the lack of depth in the midfield. Henderson has looked solid so far this year and could fill in in the middle of the pitch as opposed to the right side but I'm not sure if he is capable of commanding the midfield the way Cattermole or Cana do. He seems more of a natural right midfielder with his long shots and his ability to cross the ball into the box. I liked Leadbitter but you were right in saying he will never make it in the premier league. It is saddening to his see him go, his fathers ashes are on the pitch at the Stadium of Light for heavens sake, you knew he bled red and white. I would have rather had Collins over Mccartney at left back, I think that was a bad move by Bruce and possibly his only error of his new regime. I do understand however that they were trying to balance the books, and they had suitors for Collins and not an injury prone Mccartney.

Remember, this season is not about achieving that coveted top 10 position, it is about establishing ourselves as a Premier League team. For sure we have little cover in midfield, but I think we will manage the aim. If a top 10 position happens also then so much the better.

I see Steve Bruce strengthening in the January window and really making a mark next summer. So this season is just a step towards what can be. Every game is important but, I still see next season as the 'One to watch'.

That said we will not have a relegation battle this season for sure. That is a step up in my eyes.

I think whenever Cana OR Cattermole are out then we'll struggle because of their character. They give 100% and inspire others to do the same.
We are looking a bit thin. Although Richardson at left back against Hull with Reid up there was quite exciting. Richardson's defensive capabilities were not tested though. I think we should make a space for Mensah and DaSilva to be in the starting XI. I am not sure about Mcartney and Ferdinand deserving an automatic start. Yes, I was surprised at Tanio going too...

Good article Mr. Allen. I thought it might be worth pointing out that no matter how short we are of central midfielders, the club with not be able to progress to the elusive "next level" until someone takes destiny into their own hands and puts a bullet between the eyes of Daryl Murphy. That boy is a bad football player. At 26 years of age my dream of being a professional footballer lives on for as long as that relentlessly useless man has a contract at Sunderland football club.

I think Darren Bent's goal return against the number of shots he has actually had is wonderful.

Today we played Wolves and they were a 'team' which we were not. We have yet to GEL as a team and when we do, it will be a strong team.

Darren Bent has obviously inspired Kenwyn Jones and that is a wonderful thing. Today, as Wolves played us off the pitch we only started playing at the 60th minute on when it became 2-2. In that last 30 minutes, we saw what this team can be. With Jordan Henderson filling in for Lee Cattermole (he is a natural).

With a third of the total points gained from last season already in the bag (albeit somewhat fortuitously), I predict a solid position in Mid Table or above by March/April next year.

Given the strengthening of the team so far, I would predict a further strengthening in next year's summer transfer window.

Expect the full Steve Bruce impact in the 2010 - 2011 season. But, bear in mind it is not long since Middlesboro achieved a European slot ...
