Chris Foy was the talking point after a resilient and encouraging second half Stoke performance as he denied Jon Walters a debut goal by failing to allow a 90th minute goal which every man and his dog could see was over the line.

Unbelievable…

Stoke lined up with the same midfield from Wolves much to many a Stoke fan’s annoyance but it was the introduction of the relatively unknown Walters that held most interest and he didn’t disappoint. I’ll admit, like many Stoke fans, I knew very little of Jon Walters when he signed (other than an amusing middle name) so was looking forward to seeing how he would fit in. He was paired up top with Fuller in the withdrawn target man role and performed brilliantly showing glimpses of strength, technique, enthusiasm and surprisingly creativity – he won most of his headers and amazingly, you’re going to love this, they were often directed to another Stoke player!
Stoke didn’t start well and Spurs seemed to be playing keep ball before bursting into life with the ever lively Lennon and Bale pulling the strings down the flanks. It was the former who twice instigated moves for the latter to score twice, one which bounced off his face and the second a beautifully taken volley on his increasingly notorious left foot. The first goal was disappointing as, for me, Stoke failed to clear their lines twice, when the ball went up into the air the header was there to be won yet Faye seemed to bottle it and merely jumped with Crouch who headed the ball for Ryan to make a hash of a clearance off Bale’s face.
Stoke weren’t out of it for too long and excellent work by Walters led to a corner which Fuller scrambled home as Gomes flapped and harried as only he can, much like Lehmann when he was at Arsenal, the Brazilian seems to fall apart if a player takes up a position anywhere near him from a corner. As for Spurs’ second goal, I’m already sick of everyone talking about this ‘early contender…’ to go through it again, so I won’t…

What I will discuss though is the main talking point of the game, that being the disallowed goal that Walters bundled over the line only for Crouch to catch the ball and throw it back out again. The referee, Mr Foy, is not too well thought of in these parts already and this latest faux pas will do little to rectify that. Foy was merely 2 or 3 yards away from the incident, he had an entirely unobscured view of the ‘goal’, he even put his whistle to his mouth before looking through 15 players to his linesman 40 yards away for confirmation – just how would HE have been able to see that?! The players naturally surrounded the Referee only to be told that he didn’t see it – if he couldn’t see it then the ball was behind the post and at the angle he was at that can only mean one thing and that’s a goal.
I was frustrated that we didn’t get the point we so rightly deserved and though Harry will tell anyone who listens his keeper was fouled, that wasn’t even being close to given by the referee or linesman and as such isn’t relevant to this particular talking point. We saw some really good play in the second half and Tuncay’s introduction really injected some enthusiasm into proceedings as well as uppping the tempo to get the crowd going. The diminutive Turk continues to impress with his flicks and urgency but he once again missed an open goal which clearly angered the Manager who still refuses to give him more time on the pitch.
With the positive of Walters and the frustration of Tuncay came the disappointment for Sidibe, who went down off the ball with no-one around holding the back of his ankle, it has since transpired that big Mama could miss the rest of the season with a snapped Achilles, the despair was plain to see on his face and I for one wish Mama all the best in his recovery, he has been unlucky in the last few years with injuries and whilst he is most likely the least effective striker we have, he has never ever given less than 100% when he has pulled on the red and white of Stoke.

Out for the season?

I’m not sure Mama’s injury will alter Pulis’ thoughts in the transfer market as he surprisingly started the season less reliant on the big Malian. That said, I expect to see nothing less than a flurry of Stoke activity in the coming week and a bit as Pulis looks to address the gaping issues at full back, right and centre midfield. I would hope we will see 4 or 5 new faces who can improve the squad and I’m looking forward to how it all takes shape and I’ve naturally booked the Transfer Deadline day off too!

Greetings again from across the pond, James. Good column, I'm glad to see that you're keeping the faith thus far. I have to confess that I'm a bit concerned, even though we're only two games in. It just seems to me that this season has 'relegation battle' written all over it, but I desperately hope that I'm wrong. I'll take heart that the team has shown fight in the two losses, but it's not an easy early schedule what with the Chelsea meat grinder next up.
Losing Sidibe was a blow, and the team HAS to be active on the transfer front if they hope to move up the table and salvage something out of the season. Basically, I'm just trying not to panic here.
One bright note, though, my Austin Aztex are still on a good roll, just 4 points off of the league lead, and sitting in good shape as the season winds on. Adrian Heath is doing an INCREDIBLE job right now. Cheers! GO POTTERS!
Editor Comment - Hey coldrok, thanks for your comments.. To be honest I'm pretty relaxed, as you say the fixture list wasn't very kind to us and I've been encouraged by our play as well as our signings and fully expect at least another 2 or 3 so it will only get better.
Great news about the Aztex, sounds like Inchey (Heath) is doing a great job. Is it right that even if you win that league you can't get promoted to the MLS?

The US professional leagues don't work with the traditional relegation/promotion model that the rest of the world adopted. MLS is in the process of expanding, but they will be looking at USL teams that have an established market presence to see who has the most potential for growth. It seems strange that a team can't earn promotion on the field, which is as it should be, but there you have it.
There is a chance that the Aztex might eventually be brought into the MLS fold, but it will depend on a lot of different factors. There are already MLS teams in Dallas and Houston and the question would be whether or not Texas could sustain a third franchise without diluting the fanbase.
I'm a youth coach and the president of our local Youth Organization, and I can say that there is amazing potential for growth in the game at the grassroots. I see a new generation of fans every season, so I can feel the excitement as the game grows here in the States.
Editor Comment - That seems harsh that you can't get there on merit alone... Do you think there are any players good enough from the Aztex who would stand a chance at Stoke?

Are there any Aztex players good enough to play at Stoke? Good question, James, and a tough one. The level of competition in the EPL is incredibly stout. I'll stick my neck out and mention two guys who I think could possibly withstand the rigors, keeper Miguel Gallardo and striker Eddie Johnson. Gallardo has played in the Mexican leagues and has a real instinct for the ball. He's long and lean and doesn't allow much to get past him. Eddie Johnson came up through the English youth system and has already acquired a small bit of EPL experience through a short stint at Manchester United. He's the leading scorer for the Aztex.
I would think that there is some potential for one or both of these men to have some success at Stoke someday.
Editor Comment - I remember Eddie Johnson, was he at Fulham too or was that another one? Would be great if we could exploit the link a bit more, I think we had a couple of Aztex youngsters over a year or so back, didn't hear much about how that went...

I don't think that this Eddie Johnson played for Fulham, but of course I could be wrong. Doesn't mention it anywhere in his Aztex bio, though.
I think that you might see more transfers between the Aztex and Stoke in the future. I know that Phil Rawlins founded the Aztex with the express intent of creating an environment that would encourage player development.
It's exciting to see how the Aztex have grown over the course of the last two years. They have a lot of work to do, but they are on the right track. There is a TON of amateur talent here in Central and South Texas that could someday play for the Aztex or even for Stoke or one of the other EPL teams. The Aztex have also been adept at scouring the Mexican and South American leagues for players as well, and you'll more guys coming in from that pipeline over time.
Editor Comment - Lets hope so! All the best for the season

Nice column. You clearly exhibited your incredible ability to write an article without bias. Wait, no you didn't.
I hate Tottenham, literally hate them, but what I hate even more is homer fans like yourself who can't see outside of their own asses. How is the foul/no-foul on Gomes not relevant? I agree, it was a good no-call on the first goal, Gomes was quite soft. But what on earth is the Stoke City player attempting to do by raising his arm and touching the keeper other than to disrupt him and gain an unfair advantage? It should have been called, plain and simply, and all you would have to complain about is Tuncay's unbelievable knack for missing open shots.
I'm sure you won't allow this comment to be posted, because its right and you know it, or maybe you will so I can get hate emails from other shortsighted Stoke fans, either way I don't care. Maybe you should take some time to cool-down after a hard fought game before writing your column, may give you perspective.
Editor Comment - Why would I not publish your comment? Yes, Huth fouled the goalie in the build up to that incident and I never said otherwise? The fact is that Foy or lino never looked like calling the foul on Gomes, yet was about to give the decision of goal before changing his mind. he has since been proven to be entirely wrong and cocked up again at Stoke.
As for a biased view it's called the Stoke page not the general articles page.

If you admit Huth fouled the keeper, then as Arry said, Justice has been served.
Editor Comment - but that decision wasn't in question because it was never going to be given. Just like the handball for Defoe tonight wasn't given, it's inconsequential
