It was more the day of the Trotters than the Triffics as Stoke snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a ten minute capitulation from a team who were perhaps thinking more about the beach than holding on for that last 10 minutes. This report will tackle some of the issues through the day and most importantly the aftermath of what was a terribly disappointing day for all associated with the Potters instead of taking it’s usual format.

There's only one Tony Pulis?

It was a carnival atmosphere at the Brit, the Reggae Band was in full swing and the sunshine was beating down on an expectant Potteries faithful. The day had been identified by one local fan as ‘Day of the Triffics’ in celebration of all that Tony Pulis had achieved, it was sad to see so few people take part and that as well as the ridiculous post mortem of the match is a clear illustration that for a not so insignificant minority, Tony Pulis simply is not liked or appreciated.
Pulis is often berated for his stubbornness and inability to experiment, the fans were to be surprised by seeing Tuncay play in his favoured position in ‘the hole’ with Kitson playing as the furthermost forward – this gesture and decision by Pulis has seemingly been lost by those so quick to criticise beforehand. He is also criticised for sitting back on a one nil lead and never killing the game off, yet all three substitutions were attacking players, introduced to do exactly that – again, Pulis now being criticised for making the wrong decisions in this respect.
It’s quite simple really, any good results or performances are deemed to be in spite of Pulis and any performances or results that are poor are because of Pulis. As many readers will know, the main Stoke forum has long been split on the subject of the Manager, a lot of people didn’t want him back (nor did they with Coates) and have held an irrational grudge with him regardless of the miracles he has performed when he has the backing of his Chairman. We all remember the awful ‘Binary’ Season, but there was a lot going on behind the scenes then and don’t forget, he kept us up in spite of the Icelandics best attempts to derail us.
When Coates came back, he and Pulis talked of a 3 yr plan to get us to the Premiership, it took us 2yrs. When we got to the Premier League, they spoke of another 3yr plan to establish ourselves, it has taken us 2yrs, with each of those seasons taking in a Cup Quarter Final. The squad we came up with is unrecognisable to that today, this is in the space of 18 months – so much has changed for the better in that time, yet people still aren’t happy and our progression still not great enough.
Pulis can be a stubborn sod, he can infuriate fans with his selections, just as much as Sir Alex or Martin O’Neil can – what we can’t deny is that Pulis is a very, very good Manager and the fact we are so close to bettering last season’s impressive total is testament to that, only 1 other team in the Premier League has done that nearly 15 yrs ago – again, the facts are there for all to see.
Our first season of course was a testing one and we played a very direct game, we still can do but are now mixing our play up more, you simply cannot change things overnight and expect to keep all the good things like shape and discipline, it’s not defensive or offensive, it’s a mix and to do that you need better players, we have bought the likes of Huth, Etherington, Tuncay even, yet people again still want more. Our main problem in our first season was our appalling away form – this year to date has seen us remain the ONLY unbeaten team away in the Premier League with the best away defence over the whole season!!!!
I’m not sure what the Manager needs to do to win over these fans over and above what he has already done? The next step is Europe and we are nowhere near ready for that and anyone that thinks that is a realistic aspiration for us at the moment is delusional. I wrote a similar article back at the start of the season, I said it then and I’ll say it again, if he kept all his best qualities and also changed all the gripes fans have, he would be perfect…he also wouldn’t be Stoke’s Manager. I have a good friend who supports Charlton and I remember his complacency and hearing how Curbishley had taken the team as far as he could, they are one of many examples of fans and boards wishing away what they had and dropping into obscurity.
Pulis has proven people wrong his whole life and I think a lot of hostility comes from people not wanting to admit they were wrong about him, hell one idiot bought 10,000 red cards to protest against him in the season we were promoted – and even worse Promotion and a third season still hasn’t changed his mind. I feel sorry for people like this, people who are so blinded by their hatred and embarrassed by their poor judgement that they can’t hold their hands up and say they were wrong – it’s pathetic.
Tony Pulis will go down as one of, if not the best Stoke Manager we have ever had and in years to come, I know I for one will be able to explain to my son exactly who this new statue at the ground is and how very lucky we were to have him as our Manager and if he can show an ounce of the loyalty, commitment and pride to the club that Pulis has, I will be one proud father.

I am a Bristol City fan and if im honest Pulis was a bit of a shocker at our place for which i would expect this kind of treatment. But for Stoke fans to feel like this is totally beyond me, i a so impressed by what hes done its not that short of a miracle what hes done. Fans that berate him and buy 10,000 red cards (silly t**t) should be banned from the club for life and at the same time sort there lives out and take up another sport like curling!! As i said im not a big Stoke fan or Pulis but hes done a great job and i hope he keeps it up. Some good signings (Etherington, Tuncay , Faye etc...) also a couple of shockers i.e Arizmendi but then again Fergie brought Djemba Djemba, Wenger Jeffers so even the very best can get it wrong.Basically Pulis keep it up and if/when a bigger club need a new manager and you cant decide wether to leave or not just think about those pointless,no clue,so called footy fans that have abused you despite your success and go a place where ur appreciated.
Editor Comment - Well said Tim, every manager has blunder buys, it was very hard for us when we came up as we desperately needed players but no-one wanted to join a relegation dogfight. It will be interesting to see what he pulls out of the hat after two mid table finshes..

Spot on,Pulis is in the mode of David Moyes.Stoke Fans should be singing their prayers for having such a good manager.
Editor Comment - Quite right Joe, what's interesting is to hear other fans' comments and everyone I tell about the grumblings simply cannot believe it - it's madness..

I'm a Spurs fan, but I am really in awe of what Pulis has done in Stoke. Granted, while Stoke doesn't play Wenger-style football, over the longer term, the progress Pulis has made with Stoke is incredible. Lots of EPL-only fans have probably never heard of the name 'Stoke' till Pulis got them promoted. And now when people hear 'Stoke', it's like 'crap, how do we deal with them?'
I think it's one thing to point out the flaws in Pulis' approach, but it's another thing altogether to want him gone. The former is what can help propel a club forward, the latter is sheer idiocy.
Editor Comment - Excellent Comment KL, like I said above, fans of other clubs think we are mad. The tactics still need a lot of work but that isn't going to happen overnight. Last season our away form was woeful, and this season we're the only team unbeaten away this year, that is huge progress and with time and patience and a bit of luck the playing side will start to change slightly too, much as it has done already this season..

As an Arsenal fan I cant say I enjoy seeing the sight of Stoke but I guess from your point of view that is a great thing in itself. I think great credit has to go to a manager and team who have achieved what they have, and have done so without commiting financial suicide like for example Hull. That with the sceptical fans... I can tell you if you were to win a league and cup double next year (heaven forbid) you will still have the 'hate brigade'. Guess thats just a part of the game.
Editor Comment - Hi Wies, Yes unfortunately some fans are only happy if they are moaning and some will NEVER take to Pulis - I just feel sorry for them that this whole experience of success must be paining them so!

It's a conspiracy i tell you. Bringing Pulis down would drag Stoke down as well, just look at Curbishly & Charlton. Those hated fans are definitely paid to do that as I can't even think of one rational reason as to why Pulis should get the stick he does.
Editor Comment - It makes me shudder to even think of what might happen should we try and 'better' ourselves by getting rid of him. Every fan is a manager but some are unbelievably stupid and I know that Pulis will always put Stoke City first.

As probably the only Stoke City fan in Addis Ababa, Ethopia, I am delighted to be able to watch Stoke week in and week out thanks to cable tv - and also thanks to Tony Pulis. Without him I am afraid I would be limited to the occasional screening of an FA Cup tie and 30 seconds in the FA weekly review. Maybe the doubters should come and live over here for a while - I am sure it would give them a different perspective.
Editor Comment - Wow! That's what I call a Worldwide audience!!

I'm a Stoke fan from the US by way of the Austin Aztex affiliation. It's been fun to catch the Stoke games when they have been televised here, and it's been quite interesting to learn more about the Premiership and the history of English soccer as a whole. It's an amazing sporting spectacle for sure. I certainly don't know all of the backstory surrounding Tony Pulis, but from this vantage point he looks like a genius. I think that he has a very even-handed style that works great with his cast of role-players. I hope that the club ownership gives him more resources to work with now that they have consolidated their position in the top flight. Hard to watch that fixture vs. Chelsea today, but I still think it's been a good season on the whole.
Editor Comment - Welcome coldrok! Great to hear from an Aztex fan, I was gutted that we didn't have a pre-season there so I could come over! Yes, the Chelsea match was very hard and I imagine Pulsi will more than earn his money in the close season..

Still cant understand this whining business.
I believe pulis has performed miracles at stoke and ranks as an overachiever with limited resources. He should be on the same pedestal as Big Sam, O'Neill, Moyes and Alan Curbishley.
Guaranteeing premier league survival is an art in itself and pulis has delivered it without appearing to break a sweat. I hope stoke doesnt go the way of Spurs who sacked Jol after two 5th places which led to heightened expectations.
One contribution of Pulis to football is the delap throw which is sheer ingenuity.
Editor Comment - I DO believe that he is a great manager but like the rest he isn't without faullt.. I think the long throw has been great for the Premier League too!

Tony Pulis and Martin O'Neill has the same problem. They have done an extremely fantastic job at their respective clubs, but it is the fans who are the problem. They expect more with each season, but the problem is, they always forget that their clubs, to put it mildly, are already punching above their weight. These fans don't believe in gradual progression, and wants to jump into the sky (aka Champions League placing) when they forget that it was not too long ago, their clubs were struggling.
Editor Comment - It's a hard balance for the fan and it really does help to know that in Pulis we have someone who genuinely cares for the club and the area, and the relationship he has with the Chairman is unparalleled. The next stage of pushing on will be mammoth, I hopet o do a piece on it in the coming weeks so keep your eyes peeled!

Stoke was completely pathetic against chelsea. I was screaming at the tele because their body language showed NO interest in playing more less winning the match. It was so pathetic in the 12th minute I thought, is this match fixed to give chelsea the 3 points? Then I saw the penalty which was ridiculous.
Editor Comment - I agree, the players just didn't turn up, that usually happens with one maybe two max, but there were about 9 that didn't and that's unacceptable.
Chelsea thoughts will be up tomorrow - apols for the delay..

"then I saw the penalty which was ridiculous"???
Ridiculous that Huth wrapped his arms around Kalou's legs to prevent him advancing? I'd be interested on your version of a legitimate penalty!!
Editor Comment - That was a strange one, Kalou managed to stay on his feet until he was no longer tangled up THEN chose to go down, you can guarantee had it been Fuller he'd have been booked and don't even get me started on the two footed lunge...
Again, Chelsea report up tomorrow..
