After all the rumours of moves for Crouch and £10m bids for Cameroonian stars, Stoke City have announced the signing of Dean Whitehead. Tony Pulis has been a long time admirer of former Sunderland captain and true to form has stuck to the task of signing him, though it has taken him a few years…
The announcement of Whitehead as the first signing of the summer was, at first, met with a muted response from the majority of the Potters’ faithful, for this, the position in need of most attention before next season begins. That said, reports have emerged to suggest that Whitehead may yet be joined by another Dean in Dean Ashton which has sweetened the deal in the eyes of many this evening.
Speaking to a Sunderland colleague of mine, I was told that Whitehead is a good hard working player, always gives 110% and perhaps most tellingly that he can cover a number of positions across the midfield and even at the back, he assures me he would be sad to see him leave. Now this may well have just been a nice friendly reference as he revels in the thought of capturing one time Stoke targets Peter Crouch and Craig Bellamy – but I really think he was being sincere. The ability for a player to cover multiple positions makes him useful as an experienced squad player, though the flip side is that you could say he is a jack of all trades and a master of none - though this would be unfair to a former captain of an established Premier League club.
I think this is a solid first move for the season and if rumours of an imminent Ashton signing are true then these are two players who will improve the squad by a considerable amount as well as adding that much needed quality..

Why do they call him Bananaman?

He's a good, hardworking player, but he's not going to score you many goals. I think ultimately this may have been why we gave him up.

ermmm- Ashton is still 2 months away from fitness and hasn't really played in 2 years. I'm a West Ham fan; please, give us some money for him. He's a good player but a pure china doll.

A good first signing. Typical Pulis player, Captain of an established Premier League club.He won't get the fans sitting on the edge of their seats but he's just the type of player we need to help establish ourselves.
I don't really get the Ashton interest, we've got Beattie, Mama and Kitson for that second striker role. We need someone else for the Fuller role with a bit of pace, like the reported interest in Cisse.

I dont try to second guess Pulis. He wil do more than just keep them in the Premium League, I am looking forward to seeing a game at Stoke in September.

Ashton's a very good player no doubt, but is he ever fit for a long enough period to make his mark?

Hi James. West Ham correspondent here. My feeling is that, if Ashton is fit then West Ham should use him, we've hardly had our money's worth but, on form, he is one of the best striker's in the Prem and a true 15+ goal a season man. On the other hand, if he does go to Stoke I think you'll have to assume that Zola isn't convinced about his long term fitness so, if I were you, I'd be wary of putting too much faith in him as Zola has proved himself to be a pretty shrewd judge on these matters. Kind of damned if you, damned if you don't really. Good luck in the new season.

Stoke should give a good account of themselves this season. Don't see silverware this season but I see team building and in a few years then the challenges will come. Should finish mid-table,no need to worry about relegation
