United have reportedly had a bid accepted © Getty Images

Having helped fight a relegation battle with Maidstone United in the Isthmian League Premier Division in 2007-08, Chris Smalling now finds himself at the centre of a tug of war between two of English football’s most successful sides.

Smalling, who joined Fulham in June 2008 for a fee thought to be worth around £10,000, made his first Premier League appearance in the final 13 minutes of the 2008-09 season, introduced as a substitute during a 2-0 defeat to Everton. Seven months later, in Fulham’s final match of 2009, he made his first Premier League start, a match Chelsea won 2-1 thanks to Smalling’s 75th-minute own goal. His only other Premier League appearance to date came on January 5, as a substitute during the 3-2 defeat to Stoke.

Despite his limited playing time, persistent press reports this month have suggested Arsenal were lining up a bid in the region of £8 million. Roy Hodgson played down those reports last week; Arsene Wenger admitted monitoring the player but said “there is no truth in it at the moment”.

Still just 20 years old and having made so few Premier League appearances, many were bemused at the initial talk of a big-money move, yet Smalling warrants a closer look. Having shown real promise in his four UEFA Cup appearances, the Chelsea defeat - the unfortunate own goal aside - brought him widespread acclaim as he always looked capable of battling Didier Drogba and co in what is considered the biggest match of the season at Craven Cottage.

Standing at over 6' 4", he is a cultured, pacy, ball-playing centre-half. Reports on Monday that Fulham had accepted a bid from Manchester United, then, would seem to point towards him being an eventual successor to Rio Ferdinand. Nemanja Vidic has been heavily linked with a move away in the summer - and it remains entirely possible that Smalling is viewed as an indirect replacement for the Serbian - but, in terms of his playing style if nothing else, 'the new Rio Ferdinand' seems a more apt tag.

When Smalling might be expected to step up to the first-team at Old Trafford remains to be seen, but Ferdinand - now 31 - looks increasingly injury-prone and, if United continue to endure injury problems anything like those suffered in the first half of the season, it is highly likely that he would be thrust into action sooner rather than later.

The bid, interestingly, comes amid reports of financial meltdown at Old Trafford and, given the suggested cost of the move, indicates that Sir Alex Ferguson may not have been as economical with the truth as he has been in his transfer dealings when he suggested the club’s lack of activity was down to a lack of value in the market. Should Vidic leave in the summer, of course, talk of financial crisis will appear much closer to the mark.

Given Smalling’s inexperience, it would undoubtedly be a risk to expect him to form a key part of a title-challenging defence, but the potential is clearly there. He has already made three appearances for the England Under-21 team and, with domestic players in greater demand due to changes in Champions League rules, the move could yet represent great business for both United and Fulham.

Obviously United is looking to get even as regards mutual interest in a transfer target as Arsenal did when they got Aaron Ramsey.

Funny that it took Wenger indicating his interest before Ferguson could swoop in. Might yet be a very astute business especially if Smallings fulfills his potential. This may be Arsenal's loss for stalling; perhaps it's not too late to match the transfer and let the player determine which club he would rather be like in the case of Aaron Ramsey.

good signing if it happens

Posted by Cyrus on 01/26/2010

Value for money I say! At 20 he can only get better with age and experience. Future CB partner for Jonny Evans at Man Utd.

Posted by Ando8 on 01/26/2010

Ozi - what are you talking about? do you honestly believe that the owners of United would allow Fergie to make a rash decision and to spend up to 8 million just because Arsey W*nker is interested?

Give United's financial position that has to be one of the most hilarious statements I've read in a while.

the bid will be a very big move for the player in his football carrier.

FERGIE SHUD HAVE SIGNED DAVID SILVA AND MILOS KRASIC AND DAVID VILLA(NOT REALLY)

Posted by bindek on 01/26/2010

I agree with BHWJ partially. Milos Krasic should be at Man Utd, we could use a player like him. Don't know about Smalling though, he's only played a handful of games. Yet to see him consistently to give judgement. Might be a shrewd buy though who knows? Time will tell.

seen him play three games this season he's quality, quick and clver

Posted by geoff w on 01/26/2010

Manchester United need to stop beating about the bush and get on with the important side of signing a battling center forward. Why is this kid from the lower leagues worth all 8M pounds..only because the big boys are interested...and Nico Krankjar is only worth 1M. You are having a laugh!

Posted by gregor Truter on 01/26/2010

and unlike me, apparently he can spell, clever...

Posted by gregor Truter on 01/26/2010

Eight million pounds is very little for a quality english defender, you'll have to take my word for it, but he is quite special. Also Fergie can make him into the player that he needs, Roy Hodgson is a very smart manager and he doesn't promote lightly at Fulham, so if Smalling is playing it's because he's good. Fulham fans will be very sad to see him go.

Posted by bruneian on 01/26/2010

i want fergie signed a very good player like cristiano ronaldo for replace him..please if you see my comment make obertan and nani plays every match

"A battling centre forward"....United HAVE a battling centre forward, in fact, last season they had two. It's without doubt that United lack in the finishing department, given their chances/goals ratio isn't exactly great. A quality finisher is what's needed. Someone who is there in the right place at the right time. I'd thought Berbatov would have gone some way to filling that role, but it hasn't come to fruition. Ronaldo, and Van Nistelrooy had that talent of just being there (And even Solskjaer). For United to be a cut above the rest, it is a finisher (and a centre back) that's needed.

Personally, this sensationalism over United's debt is getting out of hand. Without doubt, United are the most marketable commodity in the football world, so being 715m in debt isn't the end of the world. Once the bond is all done and dusted, the 54 million to set it up will be nothing compared to the interest they're going to save. Expect when the old bond runs out, they'll issue new ones.

I AM SHOCKED AS UNITED SNAPPING UP THE DEAL,,,,WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT SIGNING FOR GUNNERS

Posted by AALONEBARI JOE GBOROGBOSI on 01/26/2010

I THINK SMALLING IS OF GREAT QUALITY. I VE WATCHED HIM PLAY ON TWO OCCASSIONS AND AM SURE THE POTENTIAL IS THERE. TRUST FERGIE, HE'S GOT A WAY OF MOULDIN THESE YOUNG CHAPS TO STARDOM. SMALLING WILL DO GREAT FOR US. CONGRATS UNITED!

Beware arsene trick alex into balloning united's debt

Posted by T cash on 01/26/2010

I think that is great to sign him for the future of united defence.. Johnny welcome your new future partner

Posted by banji on 01/26/2010

great signing....i believe

Posted by vishwa lalit on 01/26/2010

i think united should have signed a midfielder like silva...given dat villa is a hitman bt he wud cost 40 million or more being 28 it wud be a bit silly and fergie is right he might have money to spend bt its the lack of choice he has for a big money transfer he wants to build a team i think Y not try for "Robinho" he is a great talent and wih Fergie and OT he wud be a deadly hitman for us and i think he isnt very satisfied wid CITY either......or we can look forward to huntelaar.....Krasic is a good option too...or maybe lyk dey sniffed smalling away from nowhere they can also seek Torres....

Posted by BEN on 01/26/2010

Good signing. Whoever said he will be great with Evans is on something. Evans is average at best and really looks terrible at the moment.

Posted by fischy on 01/26/2010

Interesting piece in that it suggests the writer is daft. There is no UEFA Cup anymore -- it's the Europa League. Also, you write that Smalling is a centre-half, and then that he's a natural replacement for Ferdinand who does not play that position. He's centerback -- a back-line defender. So are Smalling and Vidic.

Posted by Em,manuel Odoom Amoah on 01/26/2010

I think Sir Alex should go in for Silva, villa and aguero so that we the fans can have peace and nothing like beating around the bush and going in for small team against big big clubs. And if he does so i think the players can do well in league.

Beware arsene trick alex into balloning united's debt

-------------------------------------------------

Beware: you might be daft

Posted by flood on 01/26/2010

I have a feeling Wenger may have pulled off some trickery. He usually doesn't admit to interest in a player unless he is going to make a move at that moment. Wenger has an amazing eye for talent, if Smalling had what he wanted I think he wouldbe a gunner now. I think he may have just tricked Fergie into spending big money for a player that may not develop.

Posted by Brandon on 01/26/2010

Spend that Money United. This just brings you one step closer to selling your entire team because of debts

Posted by jc on 01/26/2010

has anyone seen jonny evans play recently? i think smallings needs to replace HIM. weak back passes, failed attempts at dribbling...not really sure what the coaches have been telling him...

Posted by ahn88 on 01/26/2010

maybe utd should buy david silva...

Posted by Alex on 01/26/2010

Who is smalling?fergie should go 4 a bid 4 david villa, silva,di maria 2 strenghten d wings and also a gud CB,wt a support 4rm evans and brown who is goin down wt age though still in play wil see a utd concrete defence, more goals 4 utd, more chances of winning.

Posted by AYENI OLUKAYODE JOHN on 01/27/2010

HOW MANY PEOPLE KNEW JOHNY EVANS AND LOOK AT HIM TODAY AT THE CENTER OF UNITED DEFENCE. RAFAEL IS ALSO A TYPICAL EXAMPLE AND WHY WILL SMALLING NOT SUCCEED AT MANU WHEN FERGIE-THE POLISHER IS STILL THERE.

Posted by cover on 01/27/2010

8M might be a tad too dear but Smalling gives United options if Ferdinand or Vidic depart this summer. Also, SAF never wants to send out a Carrick/Evra partnership ever again.

Posted by dave on 01/27/2010

Arsene does not need this kid, he is too expensive. We can get a better defender like Mahmadou Sakho from PSG or Federico Savio from Sevilla that fits our style not some overrated English chap with no technique.

Posted by Neil on 01/27/2010

Have faith in Fergie! I only wish he would establish a settled midfield and kick Carrick into touch.

Posted by The Oracle on 01/27/2010

Its a ploy from Wenger......in summer, her will sign Sakho, who will prove to be a much better buy than Smalling. However, in saying that, Wenger will surprise us all by the end of Jan 2010 with someone 'special'.....stay tuned.

Posted by Maran on 01/27/2010

It is a sham. Smalling may not be as good as what people think. Hodgson is too smart a manager to let Smalling go. 8 mil is good business for a unknown quality - unknown even to Hodgson. Arsene is a shrewd businessman and would have struck a deal if he felt the player had potential. If he had decided to let it go, he must be laughing now that Ferguson had gone to the extent of buying for 8 mil!

Posted by UTD MAN on 01/27/2010

Thumbs up united, i've watched smallin quite a few times and he seems to be a hot prospect. Hope he'll fit in with ease. I stil feel that David Villa is the player we need to partner wayne. He is such an amazing striker and i personally rate him above Torres

Posted by Brandon on 01/27/2010

Keep Spending United... This just brings you one step closer to having a free for all sale for Berbatov, Rooney, Vidic

Posted by TexasGooner on 01/27/2010

Wenger really wanted this guy which means something. SAF beat us to the punchline. If he hadn't made the bid Arsenal would have probably gotten him for 5 million pounds. Overall good buy.

Posted by ps on 01/27/2010

I wonder why he won't play for united until the next season. given united's injuries in the back line, and young players chipping in this season, smalling could make a contribution no less than some of their reserve defenders do.

Posted by Moe United on 01/27/2010

Due to financial restrictions, i would say Fergie pulled off a great one here. Smalling has performed exceptionally well, with exception to that unlucky own goal vs Chelski, i though he did really well.

excellent move by United

Posted by AVATAR on 01/27/2010

I think Manchester United just over spend on Chris Smalling. I seen him played once and he is a lousy defender. Manchester United just spend 8 million pound or dollars, and it not worth it and it overpricing. Manchester United should gone out to find big guns defenders in order to win the Premiership. Pathetic, Chris Smalling is another Ritchie De Laet. I am disappointed the way Manchester United handle in the transfer market.

Posted by winningman on 01/27/2010

If I am not mistaken, the only reason Sir Alex chose to swoop for Smalling is because Arsenal made a bid, similar to what happened with CR at Sporting. I think United were willing to wait til the summer but once Arsenal made a bid, they had to move in to avoid missing out. Hence why Smalling remains at Fulham til end of the season. I have a good feeling about this. Smalling will mature into a less comical Ferdinand.

Posted by mOstwanted on 01/29/2010

when Lescott worth 22m, Smalling only costs MU 8m
you know we got a bargain here

Posted by ManUtdIsFootball on 02/12/2010

Don't know too much about the lad but hopefully he matures into a class act for Man Utd.
