Ever wondered who the best player of the decade is? Well, now is your chance to put forward your case. The candidates have been decided and it comes down to six world stars, both retired and still playing, who have had a massive impact on the world game in the ‘Noughties’.
First up we have current World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo. The world’s most expensive footballer, at £80 million, who courted controversy by moving to Real Madrid from Manchester United this summer. He’s only been a real star since 2005 when he made the breakthrough at United, but has become one of the greatest ever since - notching an amazing 42 goals in 2007-08 and winning countless awards.
But surely Ronaldinho can claim to be better over the decade? He’s won a World Cup, in 2002, and between 2004 and 2006 won every personal honour you could hope to win. Ok, he’s off the pace a bit now, but remember how good he was when he was at Barcelona?
Fellow countryman Kaka could also claim to be the best, as he’s got himself a World Cup too. He made an immediate impact at Milan when he joined them in 2003 and helped the Italian side to the Serie A (2004) and UEFA Champions League (2007) titles. He is also worth 65 million euros, a sum paid by Real Madrid to bring him to the Bernabeu with Ronaldo this summer.
Steven Gerrard flies the flag for England and, despite not having won a Premier League title, his performances for Liverpool have made him one of the best in the world. A driving force behind Liverpool’s Champions League runs over the past few years, surely this Scouser is worth his place as the best of the decade?
Thierry Henry might argue though. Not the most popular player after his handball controversy, but Henry at his peak was unrivalled in world football. A star for Arsenal, he has continued to shine while at Barcelona and has won nearly every major honour there is to win – although has been overlooked individually.
And of course you cannot forget Zinedine Zidane. The mercurial Frenchman may have blotted his copybook with the headbutt seen around the world in 2006, but surely he deserves to be up there as well? The three-time World Player of the Year has only six years of career in the decade, but has done more than enough to secure his place at the top table. Hasn’t he?
Give us your thoughts: Who should be given such a prestigious award? Who missed out? Act now and join the debate. Post your comment below and tell us who you think is the best player to have graced the game over the past ten years.
We’ll announce the ESPN Classic Player of the Decade in a few weeks. Stay tuned to the Classic channel (SKY Channel 429, Virgin Media 533) for extended footage of the winner too.

It has to be C. Ronaldo... Winning three consecutive premier league titles... playing three consecutive semifinals and 2 finals in Champions league. He was instrumental in Man playing two consecutive finals.. Being best on and off is one thing but continually perform for 3 years is amazing. The weight of the cups he has won should alone put him as the best of the decade

It has to be Zinedine Zidane! Even leaving out his world cup triumphs in 1998, I think his credentials and supreme majesterial qualities on the ball qualify him as the greatest player of the last generation. He certainly left his mark on the game.

Greatest this decade in no particular order:
Cristiano Ronaldo
Thierry Henry
Dennis Bergkamp
Zinedine Zidane

Shay Given
Ruud van Nistelrooy

I think, hands down, it is Ronaldinho, with only Zizou rivaling him. Ronnie, remember, was crucial to brazil's world cup win in 2002, with the goal against england and just some overall fantastic play. Kaka barely even played. Ronaldo, also is great now, but prior to 2 years ago, he wasn't THAT fantastic, although the last 2 years he was absolutely brilliant. Henry and Gerrard were also great but ultimately it is down to trophies won, and no one here, beats ronaldinho. Whether it is personal awards or Team awards. Remember that Ronaldinho single handily turned around Barcelona's fortunes when he signed for them in 2004. They were struggling in europe and the league until he arrived, and ushered in this new area of "beautiful" football that we see today. And now, this year, we see ROnaldinho having a profound impact on AC Milan's season. It is no coincidence that with Ronaldinho's return to form, AC Milan have gone undefeated in their last 12 games.

Zidane has been the best player in the decade. not only for his impact on his club but also his overall impact on the National side 'les blues'
I think the list will be incomplete without adding Ronaldo (Corinthians). What with being the only other player who has won the world footballer of the year 3hrice, he alsom is joint all time highest goal scorer in the world cup with Pele

zidane
c. ronaldo
ronaldinho
henry
ronaldo-people have forgotten how good he was
those are the best five players over the last decade bar none. they are in no particular order but they have been the best 5 over the decade. Shout out to gerrard, kahn, bergkamp, Figo, van nistlerooy, Kaka, messi, maldini,

The best player of this decade is without a doubt Peter Crouch.

Zidane without a doubt. I thought he qualify as one of the greatest of ALL TIME..not just the last decade. His poise on the ball is second to none... and his humility put C Ronaldo to shame really....Ronaldo? makes me laugh...

What about Ryan Giggs? The most decorated British footballer in history. Still playing great at the age of 36.
 |
Posted by Justin on 12/07/2009
Zidane, without a doubt. Individually, it can be argued that C.Ronaldo and Ronaldinho have equal skill. Heck they probably both dribble and shoot better than Zizou.
But the way Zidane influences his entire team and dictates most of the game is unmatched this decade. The other 2 offer flashes of brilliance, Zidane conducts the orchestra most of the time, and is himself no slouch in balls skills, passing, and shooting departments too! In this overall influence aspect, only Gerrard and Ronaldhino (at his peak) come close.
But Zidane's done it the most consistently, bringing success everywhere with him - Juve, FRANCE (where would they be without him, even if they had Henry, Viera et al?), and Real.

This one's a tricky one, with so many great players to choose from. Also have to look at who will still impact the game, even in this season, as well as the world cup. On merit alone, it would probably be Cristiano Rononaldo. The most rapidly improved player in the world. He will certainly be one of the All time Greats.

1. Zidane has been the best player this decade.Has won the world cup 1998, played world cup final 2006, won euro championships, uefa champions league, world footballer of the year 3 times, won fifa intercontinental cup. He has prospered both at club & national teams, influencing the teams greatly.
2. Ronaldo (Brazil). 3. Ronaldinho (Brazil) 4. Thiery Henry (France) 5. Ronaldo (Portugal)6. Kaka (Brazil), in that order

It has to be Zidane. Ronaldo and Kaka had great years, but Zidane was consistently amazing and more importantly, he carried France to the finals of the world cup. Without him France has been mediocre. Other than that, it has to be ronaldinho. At his prime, that guy could do anything he wanted. Let's remember that the only reason he fell from grace too was because he didn't care anymore, he already had everything in the bag. Ronaldo and messi are great but not the greatest yet. With time they will be, but right now they each have one player of the year award, and no major cups for their nation
 |
Posted by Arlborn on 12/07/2009
Seriously, no Ronaldo, the only one? Sure, may be justified because it is of this decade, but really, just check all he meant and still means. Even if you ignore his achievements before 2000(which would certainly put him on the top of this list, no doubt), he is still worthy of a top5 of this decade.
Ps: I also think he is at least top2 of the 90's.
Ps²: No, I don't know which of those 6 players are/were the best.

I may be a fan of thierry henry but I have no doubt Ronaldinho deserves to be the best player of the decade. It's such a pity that he couldn't keep up his winning form up to the end of the decade.

Cristiano is good, but his international failure means he cannot be the best. As much as I like Gerrard, the same must be said of him. That is why, for me, there are three people who qualify based on their combination of individual brilliance as well as club and international success: Ronaldinho, Ronaldo (THE Ronaldo), and Zidane. Considering Zidane was at the top of world football all the way up to retirement, he makes a strong case. Together they are the only players to have won 3 world player of the year titles. however ronaldo scored an immense 8 goals in the 2002 world cup, as well as breaking the record in 2006 that had stood for over 30 years. It has to be Ronaldo.

Posted by vishaal on 12/07/2009
Zinedine Zidane is the greatest of the decade, if not the century. Sure the others were all more marketable, but Zidane has taken an unprecedented THREE world player of the year awards, won the Champions League, Spanish Primera, EURO 2000, and the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He beat the "greatest" players in the world to do so and was a hero and icon all the while. No one else in this group can claim to have been such a monumental figure in the history of the game, or to their nation. Gerrard is without an international trophy, Henry isn't the same type of leader, Ronaldo is only a skilled player, he hasn't gotten any international medals to prove it or the accolades in general. Ronaldinho and Kaka are both excellent, but haven't been able to make the same impact globally. Kaka, he is a fans player and he can rival what Zidane has done for fans, but the line stops there. Zidane is the ultimate footballer, on and off the pitch. It would be silly not to select such a person or player as the best
 |
Posted by Alex B on 12/08/2009
I agree with the person above me ronaldo did win the 2002 world cup and scored 8 goals he also added a few tin 2006 to become the highest goalscoring player in world cup competition. it wouldnt be a list with out him!

Zidane will be the player of decade. He has done both for club and country. WC 98, Euro 2000. CL with Real. Dont forget 09 against Brazil one of the best game played in international level by far. Next will be Ronaldino as he was awsome with barca. games against chelsea in CL, against real he was awsome. Brazilian Ronaldo must come ahaed of both Gerrard and Henry. Done more than both of them in both club and country. Kaka is conistent,AC won both Serie A and CL bcoz of him. CR9 is going great, was awsome with manu but needs to prove at international level.

why are the attacking players always noticed as the best? Actually have a proper think about all the great players over the last decade. It is quite possibly none of these players should be included.
 |
Posted by Travis on 12/08/2009
Why has Giggs been left out? Record number of premier league titles, 2 champions leagues, countless FA cups, so many personal honours to name, the integral cog of the most successful Manchester united side ever, not to mention they've been the most successful side of the noughties & he's been left out??
 |
Posted by andrew on 12/08/2009
Out of this list it has to be zidane. ronaldinho can put up a fight but he has fallen off noticeably the past few years when he should still be in his prime (hes still just 29, right?). You have to throw the brazilian ronaldo in the mix as well as raul gonzalez, even though he doesn't have a world cup win to his name. I think those are the three best. C. ronaldo needs a little more time to stake his claim to this title.
 |
Posted by Anthony on 12/08/2009
No one even comes close to Zizou. He had the ability to rip apart a team with one single pass. Lets not forget the goals he scored in 98 wc final and 2002 champions league.
Brazilian Ronaldo would come 2nd in my view. The striker had everything (strength, pace etc.) and won fifa player of the year twice in a row. That is no mean feat.
 |
Posted by kerollos hanna on 12/08/2009
for me, it is definitely steven gerrard
 |

Ronaldo should definitely be a contender.

 |

Zinedine Zidane has been the best player of this decade. In second place would be Ronaldinho.
 |
Posted by mwemezi on 12/08/2009
Yeah! the likes of ronaldo de lima, luis figo and even messi warrant inclusion in the list...dont you think so?
 |
Posted by Dylan on 12/08/2009
We are forgetting the defensive superstars in all this - Buffon has been an incredibly consistent keeper for the greater part of the decade and must surely have been one of the most valuable players in the game. The likes of Nesta, Maldini, Terry and Cannavaro have been just as important to their teams as any of the aforementioned attacking maestros. And lets not forget the midfield champions - Vieira, Makelele and Keane. I think for impact on their team's success and number of trophies won. Terry, Cannavaro and Buffon could all be in the top six (Maldini's success pre 2000 not being taken into account).
 |
Posted by unknown on 12/08/2009
i think the list should have included the defenders as well. The likes of Paolo Maldini, Roberto Carlos, Lilian Thuram, etc. Look at the impact the defenders had in the game and not only the offensive players. But from the list given i would suggest the following.
Zidane:
2000-Euro Championship
2001/02-Champions League's winner ( france didnt do well without him in the 2002 world cup)
2003-LaLiga Trophy
2004-2goals against england
2006-The best performer in the world cup (vs brazil, portugal
3times fifa player and more individual awards.

Posted by aoyowe on 12/08/2009
No Ronaldo, the phenomenon... no Schevchenko... this must be a joke... Gerrard or Henry over Brazil's Ronaldo...
If C Ronaldo is up there because he broke into the united side in 2005 and won three league titles and a champions league... surely Messi should be there... who himself broke into the Barcelona side in 2005 after great performances at Holland 2005... has won two spanish league titles, two champions league titles and notched a total 38 goals last season
 |

i loved zidane's elegance but lets face it ronaldinho is the greatest of this generation. he had skill pace and entertainment. cr9 comes a close third after zidane. messi fourth only because he has failed to shine on the international stage kaka fifth

 |
Posted by Claudius Mugota on 12/08/2009
Zidane 'Zizou' is the best player in the last decade because he won everything tht a player can ever win. We start at Euro 2000, he was instrumental and was at his best. He again proved his worth in 2002 Champions League final with a super goal to win it. On top of that he has 3 World Footballer of the year 3 time. He is the best I have ever seen. He is in the same bracket as Pele and Maradona.
 |
Posted by zafran on 12/08/2009
Without doubt Ronaldinho. He's the best midfielders i've seen in this decade.Although he may been off-form during his first 5 months with milan, but ever since that , he been brilliant again.Just look when he's playing for the last 2 months, just amazing. TOP PLAYER .

without a doubt Zizou and only coz of at all you have watched him play. You'll understand you are watchin a legend. When u watch C.Ronaldo or Messi you hav a feeling sometimes they are human but when u watch zizou play in a match u do not care about the result coz youu have witnessed magic......
I'll only give u one example - Brazil Vs France, 2002 WC QF ... Nuff said.!

Luis Figo

Javier Zanetti
Clarence Seedorf
Xavi Hernandez
Gianluigi Buffon

My favorite player of all time...Zidane of course. You can't even touch him. I would have to say Ronaldinho would be his closest rival to the throne, but man, the way Zidane dictated his midfield and team was unparralleled. My list of course would comprise like this.
Zidane
Ronaldinho
Ronaldo
Henry
Oliver Kahn
Yes folks Oliver Kahn deserves to be on the list. Probably one of the greatest keepers of all time, who won the 2002 tourneys top player award. Did so much for Bayern Munchen and Germany. I have to put him at #5, but deserves to probably be higher. I hate leaving Nedved off the list, but I think he is a cool number 6or7

Ronaldinho is the best. he's the only 1 to have won best player in a row this decade. my first 4players have won world cup which is the biggest trophy in football even thou zidane and henry didn't win it this decade but at least they won european cup unlike Figo and c. ronaldo. RONALDO DA LIMA is the player of the century.(2 world cup and 3best player award in 96, 97, 02) tell me who else match that

The "Best Player of the Decade", by definition, should be a player that has shone for the entire decade, is a complete footballer (can score goals, create goals, defend, and inspire all around him in equal measures). One footballer on your list meets the criteria, and only one - Steven Gerrard!
 |
Posted by aslam on 12/09/2009
1. Ronaldinho
2. Zidane
3. Giggs
4. Maldini
5. Ronaldo (Brazil)
This is the award for the best player of the decade, not for the best two or three year a player had in this decade.
If you have any argument, just google each of them. C. Ronaldo, Kaka or Messi..hahahahahahahah
 |
Posted by aslam on 12/09/2009
to leave out the top gun of Brazil, World Cup winner of 2002, multiple award winner, WPOTY 2002, is laughable. How in the world is Gerrard better than him? hahaha
pathetic media tactic to lift English Premiere League above others..
 |
Posted by Aggrey on 12/09/2009
It has to be Zizou with no doubt...His influence on the pitch has been remarkable. His skill is a marvel to watch. Where has he played and not influenced play and demonstrated unmatchable skill on the pitch?
 |
Posted by nick on 12/09/2009
zidane for: (in order of importance)
euro 2000 victory
WC 2006 finalist
THAT goal in the CL final for Madrid
and also for how maddeningly inconsistent france has been since his departure. brazil would have been fine, if less interesting, without ronaldo, ronaldinho or kaka.
 |
Posted by Diego on 12/09/2009
It has got to be Maradona! I know he didn't play much this decade, but you have to give every award to the greatest footballer who graced the pitch.

Has to be Zidane, followed closely. Too bad gerald hasnt won anything with England, he'd have been up there with them. Christiano still has a few more years to impress further, especially with his national team. Ronaldinho had a couple of exceptional years with Barca then he fell of he track, so he is out of the reconing

There is only one man that deserves it not only for the decade, but for this Generation... ZIDANE of course. I am surprise with the inclusion of Henry\Gerrard and even C. Zidane. A truly world class player with medals and trophies to show.
The rest should be ranked in the following order
2. Henry - Would have won, if not for Zizou.
3. Kaka - Young player with massive potential. Can be considered for the next player of the decade
4. Ronaldinho - His fade in form over the last few years proved to be costly. Moreover, Brazil can still function well without him (Ronaldo, Rivaldo in '02)
5. C.Ronaldo - Not proven himself at the international stage. Diving reputation counts against him too.
Stevie G - Wonderful leader but did win enough major honours and inconsistent performances for England.
 |
Posted by Don Tan on 12/09/2009
The players should be ranked as follows:
6. Stevie G - Wonderful L'Pool Capt but lacks international class and did not win too many major honours
5. C.Ronaldo - Entertaining, skilful player but has not proven himself at the international stage. Often failed when Portugal needed him. Diving reputation counts against him too.
4. Ronaldinho - Player of the decade should be an evergreen even among the young guns. Faded away too drastically in the last few years. Although brilliant, was not the most important player for Brazil even during his peak (think Ronaldo & Rivaldo)
3. Kaka - Promising young superstar that can be considered for the next player of the decade award. Needs to be more imposing when compared to the other two French stars.
2. T.Henry - Very close to winning if not for Zizou. Phenomenal strike rate and finess.
1. Zizou - Truly world class player with loads of trophies and medals to show. Top player with a great heart. My vote!

This debate is a no brainer, it should just have been a competition for second place because absolutely no one compares to the grace, elegance and artistry of ZINEDINE ZIDANE. He should be in the reckoning for greatest player of all time, al the others are great though, but it is absurd that Ronaldo is not in this list and if Gerrard can make it into this list, then there is a strong case for Dennis Bergkamp. Zizou is peerless and that's a FACT....
 |
Posted by david on 12/09/2009
What list is this? You cannot in the History of football ever ignore De Lima Ronaldo in any form of analysis. He appeared on the stage young and strong and it only took series of injuries to humble the firepower in the mercurial striker of all time in contemporary football. You may ignore him but we the fans would forever remember this great striker from Brazil who has set a number of records fro the game.
 |
Posted by nikodimos on 12/09/2009
if you collect all the feet of the mentioned players, they can't be better than ronaldinho's feet alone. the finest ever player. only the original brazilian ronaldo can match him with zidane, kaka and messi to follow.henry then folows.

There is a reason why Futbol Mundial furnished this statement a couple of years back, "Brazilians love Pele, Argentines adore Maradona BUT the French worship Zinedine Zidane".With the mention of his name, only one word comes to mind, "Finesse".In my opinion, he is undoubtable the greatest of all time if not in my life-time, and I'm pushing 30 so.... lol. But no disrespect to Pele and Maradona cos they are greats in their own ways.
 |
Posted by Anthony on 12/09/2009
How about a goal keeper or a defender?? Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Buffon, Casillas?? Is this the bes player of the player who has won more trophies?? If you are arguing who has the most trophies than it is either Dinho, Kaka or Zidane. If you aruging a players ability to lead his players Maldini or Gerard easily.
If you talking most prolific goal scorers Henry ,RVD and Sheva. There is no such player who dominated all.
 |
Posted by Tony on 12/09/2009
Ronaldo, the phenomenon and Zidane split the award for me, they both have won everything.. Tho im a messi/CR9 fan they both don't deserve to be up there... they can't even do anything for their countries. Buffon 3rd without him Italy/Juve wouldn't be the same. Ronaldinho 4th because he also won everything and is starting to come back. Kaka 5th because he won everything important also. I measured the rankings based on Country/Team importance, trophies, personal awards.
Others would include: Francesco Totti / TT Henry/ Figo / Schevchenko / Kahn / Robert Carlos / Ryan Giggs / Nedved.
 |

I think the all rounded player should be Zizou.
 |
Posted by bola on 12/09/2009
1. Zinedine
2. Zidane
3.Zizou
4. Zinedine Zidane
He had it all, everything that mattered and makes the most of the best moments, Champion's league, World cup, Spanish league, Seria A. But for Buffon's late save, he wld have sealed lt with a win at the 87th minute right before the infamous headbutt. Regardless , we still miss him. Always expect something special when he had the ball. He is the best in this decade.

I pick Zizou, and Stevie G a close 2nd,
Nothing left to say bout Zizou tho, but in Stevie's
case, scores in every Finals he played, carries the team, and what a mediocre team he had to carry.
Zizou had many stars in his team, so does Ronaldinho, Kaka, Thierry and CR 7.

well, well, well i think it's got to be ronaldinho his talismaic diaplay for ac milan has been ups this season, also when at barca you hardly could see anyone better than him,he won the world cup in 2002,champions league in 2006,not forgetting his back to back world player of the year also his fifpro awards he is the man responsible for the huge gap between barca and real madrid and not even ronaldo or kaka can close it. gerrard should be second followed by zizou.

Zizu is the all round best for the decade.
followed by Ronaldiho.

hands down zidane ... without him france was never the same until he came out of retirement to lead them to the world cup finals. if he hadnt been red carded they would have won .. same goes for real madrid.. we have suffered without him.. cit cannot be cristiano because he has taken portugal to glory and manchester is doin well without him.. barcelona is still a force to be reckoned with without ronaldinho .. and as far as i can remember i never saw a game where zidane had a bad day .. he got red carded in some .. but he still was the centerpiece of the game

Zidane is a soccer god, none have come close since he retired. Ronaldo may one day equal him, but he has nothing close to the vision that Zidane possessed. What a master - I miss watching him play.

1. Zidane...is the best of the decade. The rest like Kaka, C.Ronaldo, MESSI, Hendry, they are very good players but they aren't great players.
Great players are those that can single handedly make an impact to the team, whether that be the club level or national level. Remember back then when Zidane retired? France was lost. Took them a while to adjust. Remember back then '94, Argentia without Diego Maradona against Bulgaria. That's what I think determines a great player to very good, good players.
Can C.Ronaldo do that?, I dont' think so. Look at how Portugal is doing? C.Ronaldo is getting better, he's more mature now. He used to be overrated but he's getting better. He's a good player to have in the team.

Zidane
Ronaldinho
Ronaldo (the original)
The others are all good, but they don't break into this league of the BIG 3
 |
Posted by Colin on 12/10/2009
Steven Gerrard.
Hands down.
No one has single handedly kept his team going throughout the decade.
Sure, he did have help from Owen early on in the decade while Torres coverted his passes into goals over the past 2 years.
However, surely no player can boast to have left his mark on 2 major finals in 2 consecutive years as Gerrard did in the 2005 Champions League and 2006 FA cup finals, singlehandedly dragging his team from the jaws of defeat to holding aloft the respective trophies.
With the appointment of Rafa Benitez, he has transformed from mere prospect into a world class player and leader. All he now needs is a league title to complete his CV and turn him into a legend.
Honestly, if he had a much stronger supporting cast, the argument as to who is the player of the decade would be finished, because he'd probably capture a near unanimous vote.

It's hard to argue against Zidane being the best player of the decade. Both technically gifted & a physical player, a leader who made a difference for both club & country, great vision and a nose for goal. The rest of the list offered have not reached his level of achievement & some of the others suggested are more worthy but still do not come close to Zizou.
My list would be as follows:
1. Zinedine Zidane
Honourable mentions to:
Ronaldo (the original)--All Time goal scorer in the World Cup, great careers in both Serie A and La Liga and on two bad knees still making an impact at Corinthians in Brazil
Paolo Maldini--There was and is no better, more consistent defender on the planet in this century. Again a solid leader and also capable of poaching an important goal when needed.
That's it for me. One striker, one playmaker and one defender, I would offer a goalkeeper but Kahn or Buffon do not come close to Peter Scmeichel who straddled this decade. end part 1

don't you see it's obvious?? surely zidane is the best candidate.. he's the true best of the best.. he's should be line up with pele, maradona, beckenbauer and maybe cryuff.. zidane is special.. he play footbale with pace n enthusiasm.. you can't doubt that.. he won everything and have good attitude while playing football (forget that metarazzi).. ronaldo or kaka n even ronaldinho can't be put along side him.. maybe they are the best but zidane is the best among the best.. ronaldo freekick n long range shot?? start recall back zidane goal in final champions leage against leverkusen.. i can't forget till now.. that classy super volley..

As a liverpool fan, I'm definitely biased towards Gerrard. He's called the second best player in Liverpool's history, only to Kenny Dalglish. that honor is enough for him to be considered the player of the decade in my opinion. However, the player that would have to be called player of the decade would be Zidane. I can't see any other player who had the ability to influence a game and a team like he did. Gerrard is a close second, but Zidane is simply a legend of the game.
 |
Posted by martin on 12/10/2009
part 2.
For me C.Ronaldo obviously has phenomenal talent but he is not a leader, quite the opposite in fact.
Messi is a wonderful talent as well and the potential and character are there but he is too young to have yet made his mark.
Kaka, in a more dignified manner, has all the skills of Zizou but that lack of fire may be holding him back from accomplishing everything he can.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Didier Drogba are two others who are on the cusp of true greatness. Ibra, much like CRon, is a victim of his own hubris but his skill set is no less sublime.
As for Drogba, Chelsea is much less a threat in his absence. Despite his unnecessary playacting, he is the real deal. He can carry club or country on his back. In August, if the Ivorians can escape the group of death and make a deep run in South Africa, Drogba may change the whole tenor of this debate.

I rate footballers on individual performance not on trophies won by club or country, even FIFAawards most times don't reflect the best , eg henry would have won it may be twice. people like JJ OKOCHA WHO HAVE THE SAME BRILLIANCE SKILL AND AGILITY LIKE ROLALDINHO AND C. RONALDO NEVER GET MENTIONED BECAUSE THEY NEVER PLAYED WITH THE BIG CLUBS.EVEN RONALDINHO SEE HIM AS HIS MENTOR.MY LIST IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER.
C.RONALDO.
RONALDINHO
OKOCHA
ZIDANE
HENRY
GIGS
RONALDO
WHO DO PEOPLE PAY MONEY TO GO AND WATCH? THEY ARE THE PLAYERS.

C. Ronaldo may be my favorite player, but Zidane is one of the greatest of all time, and his trophies, both international and club, and individual accolades alone merit him the top spot, let alone his singular ability to influence a game, mastermind the attack and make everyone around him better. Zizou it is!
 |

There is no contest here. It can only be Zidane. Achievements, skill and influence on EVERY team and competition he played. He was more beautiful to watch than any player in the last decade. C Ronaldo is still starting he is two years old in soccer.Kaka dominated for about 2 years and faded. Henry only dominated in England but did it well. My ranking.....1) Zidane 2)Ronaldinho 3)Ronaldo (Brazil)

Zinedine Zidane is my best and greatest footballer of the decade.Three times World footballer of the year.Coming from retirement to assist France to qualify for world cup 2006 in Germany. He is seen as one of the greatest footballers of all time.An inspirator to up coming footballers.
 |
Posted by Razmus on 12/11/2009
You'd wager every single player on the list himself defers to Zidane - mere awestruck disciples to the grand master. Kaka's subtlety and Gerrard's consistency come close but are nowhere near the colossal presence, fear and reverence Zizou commanded for both club and country. And leaving out Rivaldo is criminal. His legs may not have stretched his genius too far into the decade but the few years of irrefutably strong claims to being the best in the world cannot be overlooked.
 |
Posted by Dups on 12/11/2009
Player of the decade has to be Henry. No one has has more tropies than Henry this decade. He won the Euro's in 00' was in the world cup finals in 06' was part of the great Invincibles!! He was part of barca's treble winning season an may win another medal with barca.
 |
Posted by Vince Tang on 12/11/2009
My selection is Brazilian Ronaldo. His contribution, scoring rate at important matches, and ability to put the ball into the net with any of his legs inside the box from all angles put him head and shoulders above other so-called super forwards. The tropies he won at club and national levels speak volumes. He was the best in the last decade.

Only zidane gets compared to maradona and pele. if any other players can lead their team to the world cup final at the age of 34 and when their team is hitting low, then maybe they can be compared to Zidane. It's actually kinda funny that we are having a discussion about this. there shouldnt be a competition. it has to be ZIDANE

how can you say ronaldinho was inconsistent when he won world player twice in a row.if it wasnt for him who knows what state barca would be in right now he practically saved the club.oh and remember he was the one who ended the first galacticos era which had let me see ZIDANE who was a spectator in the 05 clasico and Ronaldo. zidane is definitely second but ronaldinho has won more than he has in this decade kaka only had one good year and c ronaldo only had one really good season
 |
Posted by Tony on 12/12/2009
One would have to consider very carefully who the player of the decade should be. Over the last ten years two people have won the player of the year accolade twice, Zidane and Ronaldinho, so based on that alone they should be on the list. Cannavaro also showed his best form during this period (1999 cup winners cup with Parma, euro 2000 with Italy, Serie A titles with Juve and a world cup trophy, culminating in him being named 2006 player of the year) so he should be in there too. For me Casillas too should be in there because even though he is still young, he has really been the best keeper (in terms of accolades at least), over these years. Finally the last spot for me should go to either Henry or David Beckham. Both did ever so well on and off the pitch.

It hard to say who the best is seeing that some of the candidates played in both decades. I would have to say Zidane. I am a fan of both Ronaldinho and C. Ronaldo, but Zidane just has a trait that is hard to find. He won every team and individual honour there is. It is a shame that people forget about the brazilian Ronaldo. If not for injury he would most likely be taking home this honour.

there have been many great players this decade but for me its a 2 horse race between ronaldinho & zidane. they have been recognized individually with their 3 world player of the year awards, & also won countless trophys at club level. they both starred for their respective countries in their world cup victories.
if you look at what these 2 have achieved not only for their clubs & countries but also individually this decade, its hard to argue against that.
im a huge zidane fan so i hope he wins.

there are few votes for giggs...but unfortunately he hasnt proved himself on the world stage. I know if he had the chance, he definitely would have...but in the end...he hasnt/didnt have the chance.
zidane is my choice (coz he's done it all)
followed by ronaldhinho...
C.ronaldo will be "player of the next decade" coz he's got another good 6-7 years left of him. (two world cups/two euro cups)

Why is it that goalkeepers rarely get any mention in these awards.Gianluigi Buffon has won a FIFA World Cup and has many individual honours, including serie a best goalkeeper 6 times in this decade and IFFHS Best Goalkeeper 4 times.

Zizou without a doubt.
Zidane was a player of the next decade. His skill, control and vision revolutionised soccer in his time, brought the game to a new level just to keep up with him.
His love and passion for the game, not for the spotlight or the lifestyle, but for soccer itself, inspires generations to come.

I think the writer was asleep when computing these names. Mentioning KAKA and C.RONALDO without even trying to spell RONALDO(Brazil)is an insult to the game. Who amongst these playere were better than the Phenomenon? Maybe, ZZ will come close. Highest scorer in world cup, 3 times player of the year(2 in a row),'02 world cup, and many more accolades. Let's not forget about Pavel Nedved, he was brought to Juve to replace Zizou, ended up doing much better. He's won 4 Scudettos, a European Footballer of the Year, and so narrowly missed out on the Champion's League. He's as hardworking and professional as a footballer can be, too, unlike some of the younger stars...

Zidane definitely, followed by Ronaldinho and Ronaldo (no, not Cristiano. Not yet at least).
How did Gerard get shortlisted and not Giggs? Gerard is an underperformer for an underperforming team.
Even if there is a need to include a Premier League player, surely, you cannot find someone better this decade than Giggs.
From the way he ripped Arsenal apart in the FA Cup in 2001, to his control of the Man U midfield (with one of the highest assists this season), he surely is the Premier League's player of the decade.
He played the whole decade at the top level. Giggs is the best from the Premier League. But Zidane has to be the best overal.

The greatest players of the decade has to be topped by zidane his class was unrivalled the only man that won more in his career than The true ronaldo from brazil both of their accolades are unparalled in football history. c ronaldo shouldnt even be considered he just became good like 3 years ago and hasnt done what others have. the other players who have to round off the list would be ronaldinho who was impeccable in his prime ruud van nistlerooy for being a goal machine makele for defining a role and thiery henry for his incredible seasons at arsenal people who were born in the mid 90's shouldnt opinionate because all they have really witnessed are ronaldo and messi and they have barely started their careers. maybe they be on the list for the next decade. but both of them have not done nearly enough especially in such two horse races as the premier league and barcelona dominated la liga

Thats quite an impressive list! Yes, all of them have had lasting impacts on the game and specifically the teams whthe team, whose jerseys they have adorned. However, one must not get carried away just because some are performing now. when you look at the most crucial aspects of the game: Overall impact on the team, medals for both club and country, ball skills and character, one can only think of Zizou. He edges them out. What does C. Ronaldo have to show for his country? How many times has he been the best? How has he fared when against the world's best? I would rate Ronaldo Da Lima ahead of him several times and even Ronaldinho
Well, I would go on and on, but it has to be Zizou. He takes the biscuit!

You're list isn't right, you've missed out some incredible players. the main one being ronaldo. Zinedine Zidane himself says the best player he has seen/played with/against was THE Ronaldo (in an interview on CNN). You could argue that had this been a competition on the best player across 2 decades then he is worth adding and would be no.1 but he was around in this decade too. 2 world cups, all time leading world cup goal scorer 3 time World player of the year (2 consecutive wins+youngest player ever to win) 2 ballon d'or's (youngest player ever to win it) not to mention coming back from 3 career ending injuries keeping him from his prime, making him change his game and still be the best, who else has done that!? You've missed out the greatest player since maradonna. He scored more maradonna esque goals than maradonna himself, youtube him!!
In your list the best is Zidane, what a legend, the others arent even close. Here's what he has to say www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tea20qaiYl4

Giggs has to be up there. He is the only player in the EPL to have played all 10 years, win the most trophies that anyone from all over the world that has played in the EPL. What ever player you can name that has ever played in the EPL, Ryan Giggs has won more trophies than anyone. All of which he has done as a fair, non cheating, non abusive player who doesnt dive, or try to end careers with horror tackles. He was always touted as the next George Best. Incidentally, even Pele said George was the best. Giggs has won even more than Besty himself, God rest his sole. Ryan Giggs is simply a gentleman footballer who is graced with all the attributes to truly be a great player........and he is STILL doing it!

Granted, Messi is too young to be declared player of the decade...but why are people complaining about his 'international failures'? Do you forget that he won the under 20 world cup (winning the golden boot) and that he won olympic gold in 2008? Those are international tournaments. He is only 22 years old, he shouldn't be expected to have a world cup yet. Don't forget he was benched during the 2006 game that Argentina lost to Germany in penalties...who knows what could have happened if he played.

this is an answered question, yes there will be some arguments but they will understand at the end of the day that Zidane (zizou) is the best. If those selected players were asked, they will say that he's the best without a second thought.

i don't really like zizou coz he didn't play in my favorite clubs. but, he is simply the best in this decade. he is in the same level with maradona & pele in history of football.
btw, i think the best way to decide who's the best is by separate the players into their natural positions.
my list:
1. BUFFON (GK)
2. MALDINI (DF)
3. ZIDANE (MF)
4. (the real) RONALDO (FW)

O-M-G...
I'm a bit confused here...seems we have shortmemories...but then again you can only authoritatively speak for the generation of footballers u actively watched...RONALDO DE LIMA, iv noticed RARELY gets the acclaim he deserves in the beautiful game this days! Perhaps it bcos he is still playing and has gone all portly but STILL????
Bar pele and maradona, there has been no greater player. NONE. If u didnt watch him, go and look for footages. If fact he is STILL doing it; not as silky and elegant as he once did but boy, there has been no better striker in world football. He started insanely early and he is still here! Even with ridiculous injuries, he's always come back to perform at the highest level. Even at 30%, he's better than most strikers out there!
BUT whenever the greatest are mentioned, he is happily thrown behind lesser players. Now, some of this players are in their own right great but RONALDO???!!! 3-TIMES WORLD FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR (and if not for FIFA...ctd

its truely a tough one to call. the two players I cant seperate are Ronaldinhinho and zidane. they are both outstanding players. I remember their contributions to their country's winning the world cup, unbelievable style. So I tossed a coin and Ronaldinho won and therefore he is my player of the decade.
 |
Posted by Lazarous Luombe on 12/22/2009
while trophies are the ultimate, I truly believe its the contribution that a player makes. C Ronaldo, just like Henry, has never been a big game player. Let him face Liverpoool, Chelsea, Barca or Real or even for Portugal he does not shine. He was go with Shefield, Wigan and the likes. At world stage NO. I will go Kaka, Gerald and Zidane in that order.

 |
Posted by ahmad on 12/23/2009
definitely ronaldinho...he's the protagonist of the fall of real mardrid and galatico policy...we'v to choose among ronaldinho, ronaldo and zidance. in his barca days, dinho's overshadowed both ronaldo of brazil and zidane...ronaldo's still scoring lots of goals for fun,and zidance proved his past is not the best by dragging france to WC2006 final...dinho dominated both of these stars.that's analysis of the 1st half of decade..now,in 2nd half of decade, we'v to compare dinho against ronaldo and messi of today. chelsea defence, even under mourinho, couldn't handle dinho, and dinho singlehandedly dragged barca to beat chelsea..messi and ronaldo failed to dominate the weaker chelsea defence in post-mourinho era..

My vote goes to zidane, he played classical orchestra soccer, when he played everyone observed, besides all the silverware, the men is both an icon on and off the field,a leaving example for C Rondaldo's and the Messi's,as none posses the vision this great men has.i miss his play.in my view, only JJ Okocha,Clemence SEEDORF,STEVEN GERALD, Patric Viera and Mohamed Aubatrika comes close to this legend.
