We've got our collection of World Cup finalists as six more teams fell by the wayside, but what will be the fate of those managers who failed to carry the burden of their nation's expectations?
Slovenia became the first European team to lose a play-off first-leg and still make the finals after a stirring display. They shattered Guus Hiddink's dreams of leading a fourth different nation to a World Cup. His Russian side capitulated with indiscipline costing them as both Alexander Kerzhakov and Yuri Zhirkov were sent off in their 1-0 defeat in Maribor.
The only winner from a Russian perspective is going to be Hiddink. Despite failing to qualify, one of the most sought-after managers of the past few years is now going to be on the market again seeking pastures new. And Manuel Pellegrini, Rafael Benitez and Mark Hughes should probably all shoot fearful glances behind them as the Dutchman is likely to want a return to club management after whetting his appetite during an enigmatic five-month spell at Chelsea last season.
In stark contrast to his rival in the dugout this evening, Matjaž Kek has little experience of the glamorous arenas of the globe. But the man whose previous coaching positions had been with the Slovenian under-15 and under-16 teams masterminded an upset of a horrified Hiddink and it is he, not his widely acclaimed opposite number who will be enjoying World Cup football next year.
Thierry Henry. Cheat. The words hardly roll off the tongue but those are the accusations heading the Frenchman's way after his "main de dieu" moment against Ireland stole a finals berth for the French. Though the streets of Paris will be overflowing with champagne, listen carefully and you will hear the simultaneous sigh of "merde" echoing amidst the empty bottles as fans remember that Raymond Domenech is somehow still in a job.
A disastrous display at Euro 2008 has been followed-up by a shambolic qualifying campaign saved only by a cunning piece of contentious improvisation from his captain. Domenech received a barrage of boos from tennis fans at the recent Paris Masters and has been under widespread pressure from supporters and the French media alike. But it seems the misfiring manager will amazingly get another opportunity to prove his lack of tactical nous in the southern hemisphere.
Giovanni Trapattoni has done a fine job with the Irish national team and was just 17 minutes away from one of the most famous results in Ireland's football history. That unlucky defeat to France in the play-off first-leg is the only stain on the wily Italian's record with the boys in green and he will undoubtedly be given the opportunity to continue his excellent work and spearhead Ireland's pursuit of a spot at Euro 2012.
Ukraine boss Oleksiy Mykhaylychenko had a four-year spell with the Ukraine under-21s before being given the top job to oversee Andriy Shevchenko and co's bid for qualification. And it looks like he may be heading back to the youngsters with his tail between his legs after Dimitrios Salpigidis wrote the final chapter of Mykhaylychenko's Greek tragedy by handing him defeat in Donetsk.
Otto Rehhagel will never be sacked from his job as Greece boss - the shock triumph at Euro 2004 has ensured that. But hats off to the tactically astute German genius, who continues to pull off surprises. This time, the veteran coach ensured a surprise finals berth for the Greeks who had only just manoeuvred past the mighty Latvia at the last minute to make the play-offs.
A Ronaldo-less Portugal made the finals and Carlos Queiroz has salvaged what little was left of his managerial reputation. Excellent as an assistant, he has consistently underachieved as a head honcho but he gets a chance to prove me wrong at next year's finals, when he will have his prize asset (not Nani) on hand to help his World Cup conquest.
Miroslav Blaževic is the oldest coach in Europe at 74 years old and it is impossible to ever undermine his credentials after he guided Croatia to the 1998 World Cup semi-finals. He missed out on qualification this time with an ever-improving Bosnia team, and the decision about whether he takes a well-deserved retirement will be firmly up to him.
Even if they secure a third successive African Nations Cup triumph in January, the taste of defeat is unlikely to have left the mouths of Egypt players and fans, after losing out on qualification to their bitterest of rivals Algeria - 1-0 in their unprecedented one-off play-off in Sudan.
However coach Hassan Shehata should not be packing his bags up yet as he has experienced this before after qualification failure in 2006. If he can bring home the Nations Cup there is a chance he can try for third time lucky in 2014. Meanwhile, Algeria coach Rabah Saadane will likely have a job for life after guiding les Fennecs to a first finals in 23 years. That he achieved it by getting one over on the old enemy Egypt means he is guaranteed a good table in the restaurants of Algiers for the foreseeable future.

It is unfortunate that French team qualified in an antifootball way. This is not good enough for the game.

the 8th wonda of the world is the fact dat Raymond Domenech is stil in charge of the french team..especially after a consistent string of hellish perfonances and hence woeful results...now henry's shameful and unfortunate cheatin antics has ensured d embattled tactitian wil live to fight anoda day..surely d french FA are determined to drag their football backwards...as for greece, king otto has done wel for greece but its not so much of a miracle considerin d fact dat they played a low profile team in ukraine..and his follow-up after the euro 2004 success hasnt been anything 2 smile about...portugal were always favorites to progress with or without ronaldo at the expense of bosnia who i must say did well to even make it to the play-offs..its gives carlos queiroz anoda chance to make an impression wit his portuguese team afta a less than impressive qualifyin campaign..and finally, russia let demselves and their manager down big time by allowin slovenia crawl past dem into southafrica !

Am a Chelsea Fan, Hiddick is my Man, he can still go to the World Cup, because Nigeria will need a Coach of his kind, the Nigerian present coach Amoudu, lack the tactical discipline to guide the Nigerian team (super Eagles) to glory both at the world cup and the Nations Cup, the NFF will go for him, l pray he doesn't turn down the offer, if he accepts it then Nigeria can win both the world cup and Nations cup, apart from Brazil, no other country in the world can boast of more good players than Nigeria.

The Thierry Henry handball incident, something got to be done abt this. It is not fair for a team playing their heart out to end their campaign this way. I think the use of replay by cameras shd be in place for such controversial situation, just like what they did for tennis on line call. If the referee had indeed approach Henry, I wonder what his reply could be. Will he speak the truth? Incident like this have happen numerous times but for this match it is far too unbearable for those Men in Green, this incident is no fault of anyone, he did what he shd do, carry on playing and if like I say above, if replay cameras are in-place then it a different story. Hopefully FIFA can do something quick before the coming World Cup.

He has done well for is country.he should be celebrated by all.
for is future as a manager in the country is at risk,he should fine a new job some where else. for instance Nigeria is looking for him as a manager. so him think twice and look at the next fly to go.

I really feel fo the Irish. they are not really a skillful side, but they are so resillient and gutsy. So the old gaffer Giovanni Trappatoni will not be tasting 2010 World cup action- with Ireland. I bet he wants to be there in SA; i see him leaving the Irish and going off with one of the inexperienced qualifiers to SA2010. may be Nigeria or honduras or korea dpr.

He is a good coach although he didn't qualify them to the world cup. may be he should find a good club in Europe where he will coach. i recommend him as a good coach. or may be he should come and coach the Nigerian National Team (The Super Eagles). He will be welcomed in by the Nigerian Soccer loving Fans. thanks. Greetings to my dare loving Chelsea football club.

some of us are glad that at last one of the best coaches in the world is presently unengaged. i believe hes the best man to lead nigerias own super eagles to the nations cup and the world cup. Amodu Shauibu has proved to technically deficient when it comes to the big games. but he must be given some credit for taking us there even though the manner of qualification left us gasping for breathe. I believe Nigeria should make their move now before other suitors start queueing at the door of this astute tactician.

I think that the France Coach should be sacked. I felt pity for Trappatoni as such that is life. We need Guus Hiddink for Nigeria to perform well at the 2010 world cup. Upon all the intimidation the Algerians were subjected to, they still qualified.

I think HIDDINK should just go to Liverpool. Liverpool needs a manager not a coach.
 |
Posted by opeyemi on 11/19/2009
I think FIFA should look into the case of thr france versus Ireland match. Big teams should not always get away with things like this, its not good for the game. If Nigeria could convince Guus Hiddink to come, that would be great. The Nigerian team has enough talents, what is needed is a world class coach to lead at the world cup.

Its really sad the Irish had to go out that way. It also shows very poor officiating especially when the referee was told by Thierry Henry that he had handled the ball and still went ahead to award the goal. Well that's football for you.

Henry did cheat, but imagine the French criticism towards him if he did not continue to play after touching the ball with his hand? On the bright side, France will finally be seen the way they should be, cheats. They will be targeted and embarrassed at the WC, thanks to Henry and Domenech.

Speaking from the southern Hemisphere (Aussie). The only Club that Gus Hiidnk should go to is Liverpool. This great English Club is in need of some one with the great talent, of which Guus Hiddink has plenty

sorry guys, i'm not taking sides coz effectively i don't have anything personally invested in either parties, but i remember one Diego Maradona, they call it the "hand of god" and he is a hero, this was in the knockout stages of the WC, so Henry is no different, the occassion is similar if not better, cut the brother some slack, what would u do if u could take your team through, lets not be pharisees here, I don't support it, but he only did what any man would, so please he without sin cast the first stone. If u wouldn't have done it for yo country then go ahead and talk.......
