Nicknamed the "mother of all matches", the grudge match that was Algeria vs. Egypt did not contain the sparks of the thrilling final group game; but Algeria won’t care. Beating the back-to-back African champions 1-0 in Sudan, the unfancied Algerian side worked wonders to reach their first World Cup in 23 years and many will suggest that it was well-deserved.
Not only did the Algerian side have the better of the qualifying group, they also had to suffer a violent attack as their team bus was stoned on the way to the stadium ahead of their 2-0 defeat in the final, all-important, qualifier. Now, victory five days later will taste all the sweeter as clashes between rival factions extended as far as France in the build-up to the game.
Such was the animosity before the kick-off, FIFA appealed for "fair play and responsibility." At least 32 people were injured in skirmishes after Saturday’s game, while Egyptian businesses in Cairo had millions of dollars worth of damage caused by riots.
The presence of 15,000 Sudanese police around the stadium - nearly one to every two spectators - calmed the atmosphere slightly, but FIFA would not have liked what they saw on the pitch within the first 30 minutes as four players were booked.
Algeria were on the back foot after the initial scuffles, but a moment of brilliance from Antar Yahia - as the centre-back volleyed an incredible strike into the net just before the half - sealed the tie. So often, ties like this are settled by such a moment, and it won’t be one that Yahia will forget in a long while.
Cue wild celebrations. But there was still work to do. A solid rearguard action saw Algeria keep out the Egyptian attack, with first-leg hero Emad Moteab going the closest. One could argue that Egypt coach Hassan Shehata had gambled by keeping Mohamed Zidan and Hosni Abd Rabou on the bench, but even their introduction for Amr Zaki and Ahmed Fahti made no difference.
At the end of the game Algeria ‘keeper Faouzi Chaouchi climbed onto his crossbar to celebrate, bringing back memories of his counterpart Essam El Hadari, who had done the same when Egypt claimed back-to-back African Nations Cup trophies. However it will Chaouchi who will travel to South Africa, against the odds. Egypt will head into the 2010 version of the ANC with a heavy heart. Algeria are in the finals for the first time since 1986.

Congratulations to Algeria. I, and most Nigerians I know, were for you because of the experiences you suffered prior to the last group game. Although Egypt are double African champions and are a strong team, your performance was brave and resolute and a triumph after the lows of Saturday. Now gird your loins for the coming test, the World Cup. All Africa's representatives must make the motherland proud.

Now that the dust has settled, one can justfiably argue that Algeria were worthy winners of the two legs against Egypt.Indeed they were ahead even before this tie needing not to lose by one goal to advance only to be undone by a late Egyptian goal in Cairo.Egypt is notorious of using unfootball tactics every when opprtunity comes like giving poor facilities to visiting teams, hostile fans(4 Algerian players were reportedly injured by Egyptian fans'stones) & time wasting during the match when the score is in their favour.Don't forget that Algeria really never had a chance of home advantage(match was played in Sudan)i think they would have performed better in Algeria. This should be a lesson to all teams that even without unfootball tactics to opponents,a game can be won and FIFA's fair play slogan should be promoted at all times.PEACE TO THE WORLD.

I would like to be the first to congratulate the Algerian team and fans for their successful qualifying campaign and wish them all the best at the WC. It is a bitter pill to swalllow to see our Egyptian golden generation again fail to qualify for the World Cup. However, life goes on and people need not forget the WC happens every 4 years so chances are plenty. I hope the media-spinsters in the world realize their shame in what transpired from their careless, irresponsible and manipulative journalism. All fans, both Algerian and Egyptians, in addition football fans and neutrals around the world were duped by the master manipulator in this case and swallowed up the mixture of lies, rumors and folklore that was presented to them on a daily and towards the end hourly basis. We did not lose our humanity and brotherly love over a football match, we lost it because hate spinning media scum played on the simple nature and gullibility of patriatic football fans.

it is heart acheing to see Egypt not going to the world cup, bearing in mind that Egypt is one of the best teams in Africa, standing a chance of making Africa proud than many other African teams. I sympatise with them. However FIFA's credibility is very much on the low ebb if nothing is done to France's controversial GOAL.Ayodeji Akinlonu,NIGERIA

That was wonderful, big ups for the Algerians. Egyptians misbehaved and so deserved it. Let us now forget that and focus on the future come 2010

I am Sudanese and soccernet needs to write about and look into what happened after the game. 15,000 Sudanese Police could not do anything outside and the Egyptians despite losing were violated by the Algerians. The Egyptians had to be saved by Sudanese people letting as much as 100-130 people into their houses each.

Algeria should have not played the game in the first place. I mean what had happened in Cairo is unacceptable. Strangely enough, FIFA didn't do much and I really wonder if they stand for fair play or favoritism. And favoritism it is, especially after seeing the France-Ireland. I have never seen such atrocious acts done on players who represent more than just a team but a country. Nonetheless, Algeria played the game in Cairo which shows alot of character. I think Egypt would have not done so. Anyways, the game has been played and Algeria won it. Good thing there is divine justice. Good luck Algeria and Ireland.

Algeria are a dirty team and the world will see this in South Africa. But I'll give them credit for kicking the hell of the the Egyptians to the point of initimidating without deserving red cards. They have the players to do well, but their style of play will not win them fans. Why the hell Egypt chose Sudan as a nation is beyond me. Why not make it more neutral, like somewhere in South Africa?!
