He may be an awful egotist, a theatrical prima donna, a perma-tanned preener and a smirking winker, but the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo still has a chance of being at the World Cup finals is one that we should all be grateful for.
South Africa 2010 without Ronaldo would be like watching the X-Factor without Simon Cowell. A lot more palatable perhaps, but you always need a pantomime villain and a figure who provides pure entertainment. It is a guilty pleasure to feel comforted that those outrageous flicks, bedazzling stepovers and surging runs could be evident come June.
The injured Ronaldo did not even feature on Wednesday night when a 4-0 win over Malta secured Portugal’s spot in the European play-offs, courtesy of goals from Nani, Simao Sabrosa, Miguel Veloso and Edinho, but just a week ago the country looked to be in real danger of elimination.
A win over Hungary on Saturday, in which Ronaldo suffered his ankle problem, was the crucial result for under-fire coach Carlos Queiroz and, after a third victory in succession, the boss can now prepare for a two-legged tie which will determine whether his side reach the finals.
It is debateable whether they deserve to. Having lost to Denmark and drawn with Albania and Sweden at home, Portugal have not played to anywhere near their potential, even if their current crop of players pales into comparison with the ‘golden generation’ of Luis Figo and Manuel Rui Costa.
Real questions remain over Queiroz - who failed to qualify for Euro ‘92 and the World Cup finals in 1994 in his previous spell as manager - and results have been poor. But they have produced when required and momentum is growing ahead of the play-offs, where they will face one of Ireland, Bosnia, Slovenia or Ukraine. All eminently winnable fixtures.
Whether Portugal have enough to win the tournament outright, should they negotiate the play-offs, is debateable. Ronaldo is by far and away their star figure with players such as Deco and Simao mere understudies to the leading man.
But whatever your opinion of Ronaldo the person, the celebrity, there is no doubting that the World Cup needs to showcase the world’s best players. Just think of Pele in 1970, Diego Maradona in 1986 and Zinedine Zidane in 2006 (irrespective of his moment of madness in the final). The huge sigh of relief from Nike’s marketing department alone is audible enough.
Infuriating he may be, but Ronaldo is indisputably one of the global greats and it was a relief on Wednesday to see Portugal sneak into that play-off spot. Now the onus is on the forward, should he recover from injury, to ensure he reaches the stage he deserves when the play-offs come around in November.
At Euro 2004, the closest he has come to glory in the international arena, Ronaldo left the Lisbon field in tears as Portugal were denied a home victory by Greece. That pain will not have subsided and, with Ronaldo at his inspirational best, South Africa could be the setting for his crowning glory.
That he is still in with a chance of reaching the finals means we could all have the pleasure of seeing whether he can live up to the hype.

Your comments are rubbish. As they say in football, look at the score board before making comments. I wouldnt be surprised if England doesnt make it out of the round of 16....again...wink..wink.
Do you actually think England plays well enough to win the world cup....please.
I would still take Argentina over England, even with the way Argentina is playing oh but I know, Rooney was sent off because of the wink not the cowardly stomp on Carvalho's nuts.
Wink, Wink.

It's only in England that people hate Ronaldo (well, maybe in Catalunya too. Ask most people anywhere else about the winking jib and they would have no idea what you are talking about. It would be better for the WC if Portugal go to South Africa. Unlike a truly boring Sweden side, they play skillful, attacking football. Sadly they can't hit the side of any half decent barn.

Thanks for you post. I agree that Portugal didn't play its best throughout their qualifying campaign but portugal is also going through a transition period of players, a new coach, and higher expectations to live up to. We can't forget the quality of the team and what they have done in the last couple of tournaments. In the last 3 major tournaments, 2004 2006 2008, portugal have finished either quarter finals or higher. Now regarding Ronaldo, he's the best player in the world. But I don't understand why people speak about him like they know him personally. People judge him by his looks, is off field antics, but you have to realize when your at the top everyone's eyes are on you. He is still only 24 and just at the genesis of his prime. He still has time to grow on the national team and a lot more to offer.

Like they say, "Deserve's Got Nothing To Do With It"... Its all about the results. And they came around over the last 4 matches (unbelievable draw at Denmark for anyone who saw it - did anyone think Denmark "deserve" a draw?).
I wouldn't say that the current team "pales" in comparison to the Golden Generation. Not a team that features 4 Chelsea players (with Carvalho, Bosingwa & Deco regular starters), 2 Real Madrid (one of them the reigning World Player of the Year and Pepe a starter), 1 Juventus and 1 Manchester United, in addition to Simao, Bruno Alves, Raul Meireles, Meira, Joao Moutinho or Liedson. A couple of problems at GK and left back though, I'll admit.
If the team makes it to the World Cup (still an "if"), it should at least go through to the quarter-finals.
And with Ronaldo, besides the "outrageous flicks, bedazzling stepovers and surging runs", he does score the odd goal.

Well... Nelson Rego you are being what you said in your own comments... "look at the scoreboard befrore making comments"... How would you know England wouldn't make it to win the WC?? Well... I would say they will be very good if they can make it to the semi-final... You are just another England hater... Argentina's current world form is not as good as compared to England now... Having Maradona as coach?? His 'Hand of God' might even eliminate themselves out before they can reach the last 16...

The last thing Portugal supporters need is a gaggle of Ronaldo fanboys to detract from the importance of team play. Despite Ronaldo's obvious quality, I would have to argue that the team has been playing better without him of late.
Perhaps the fanboys can get their fill of Ronaldo from the many TV commercial sponsorships that will undoubtedly feature him. But there are many others, like myself, still who believe that soccer is a team sport. And there are those of us still who believe that there's so much more to the sport than highly promoted players force-fed to us from the Premiership.

I don't agree at all with the comments about Ronaldo. I believe the World Cup without the likes of Ronaldo will be better.. this player is not great as the writer suggests, in fact he is an actor and a kid.. look at his walks, runs and constant looking at the crowds.. he is so arrogant and does not deserve all that praise.. exagertion in acting playing soccer is something the crowds know... the World Cup without Ronaldo will be much better... actually the World Cup without Messi will be a disaster and a disappointment to all soccer fans.. thanks.

Don't underestimate England team this time.England glory will not be determine by their strikers esp Rooney but their midfielders such as Gerrard and lampard. Yes Argentina is a very good team, they are still one of the favourite to win the tournament if they replace maradona "the hand of god". Imagine he used 70 players to reach last automatic qualification. what sort of leadership is that? how did he make decision? by finger juggling??

I think his comments are spot on. Portugal are no longer the team they used to be. The only reason that Portugal qualified is because Sweden suffered an uncharacterictically poor qualification run. Portugal do -not- have a good team. Sure they have Ronaldo, but who is the outstanding player in the team apart from him? The Portugal team suffers from a lack of depth.
And England are playing birlliantly compared to the McLaren era. And yes, I do believe they have a chance to win the World Cup. Not a a fantastic one, but they have a pretty good team (albeit a bit weak in some areas) with an excellent coach.
And Nelson, it was Ronaldo who winked, not Rooney.

I must admit mixed reaction to your article. I am not necessarily a huge CR7 (or is it CR9) fan, but there is no denying the quality of this player. Right now, in my opinion, the undisputed best on the planet. I do agree with some of your "primadona" type comments, but I really feel that you are talking about Ronaldo of a few years back, very young, rebellious, with tons of money and literally the world at his feet. I can only imagine how most of us would have been at that age, with all the money, glory and talent. I actually think it quite commendable that the young man hasn't let it get to his head more than that. The real scary aspect about Ronaldo, is that he just keeps improving. I find that his vision, pace and tactics are getting better and better. I truly hope Portugal does make it and that he can finally show the world that he is in a class by himself. Finally, your comment on the current Portugal squad vs. the "golden generation", I think they have a more tallented team now.

Greg, "the team has been playing better without him of late" are you serious!!! The last game he wasn't there so it is a little bit of a hate comment but at least your not a cpmplete hater like Steve, Steve you must be English because you have total hatred for the kid...yes he is a "kid" so cut him some slack. From your judgements on Ronaldo I don't think you could handle the fame and fortune nearly as well as this "kid", the bottom line soccer is a beautiful game and any player such as Ronaldo is a plus for spectators, including Messi...he deserves to be there I agree

Hahahaha...l have honestly not laughed this hard over stupid comments for a long time.To the Ronaldo hater's, yes l am portuguese and yes l actually do think we are a better team without him.In the last game without him our other "world class" players got a chance to show there worth.Simao the rightful "Captain" of the national team stood out and took the game by the horns.Deco had an outstanding match and Nani showed some promise. To deny Portugal a spot in the play-offs to Sweden would have been a travesty due to the utter boringness of Swedish football.I think id rather watch synchronised swimming! And to steve, I dont understand how you can still doubt Portugal's quality considering that over the last 2 MAJOR tournaments the English have actually qualified for, you have been knocked by yeh you guessed it PORTUGAL...so as u said Look at the Scoreboard and then talk again!

Ah, great! This settled up some confusion I've heard.
