It may have been ill-advised, but Emmanuel Adebayor's goal celebration against old club Arsenal two weeks ago was surely born out of emotion rather than a desire to incite the fans. Pre-planned? Possible but I'd say unlikely.
The Football Association has shown a rare moment of sanity in not handing the Togo international a further ban, in addition to the three-games for his attack on Robin van Persie in the same game.
The 25-year-old had been the subject of taunts from Arsenal fans throughout the match and his goal 10 minutes from time brought both relief and joy; perhaps he did lose his head. Had Adebayor actually gone right up to the Arsenal fans it would have been different. But he didn't, stopping at least 20 yards short of a group of supporters who were never his greatest fans.
And let's also remember that the player was booked at the time by referee Mark Clattenburg. Why all of a sudden does the FA see fit to take further action against a player who has already been dealt with by the referee?
I'm sure Barnsley's Iain Hume must be wondering just that after the FA failed to take further action against Sheffield United defender Chris Morgan. In November last year, Morgan was booked for a vicious elbow which left Hume with a fractured skull. He needed emergency operations and was out of football for nine months. Despite several complaints from Barnsley, the FA refused to take any further action claiming the matter had been dealt with in the course of the match.
It would have been very easy for the FA to throw the book at Adebayor when you take into account the scenes during the West Ham-Millwall Carling Cup tie and the sensitivities over a possible pitch invasion. That said, why was Junior Stanislas not brought to book over his celebration in front of the Millwall fans after scoring the 87th minute leveller? Considering what was going on in east London that night the actions of Stanislas were foolhardy and liable to lead to major trouble. Stanislas' actions were arguably worse.
Adebayor, of course, has not got away without recriminations, with a suspended two-match ban and £25,000 fine handed down.
He will have to curb his behaviour until the end of next year to escape that ban though a goal at the Emirates in the return fixture on April 24, just three games before the end of the season and what could be a Champions League shootout, sounds like bother.

This is about the best Adebayor could have hoped for, and trust me the 2 match ban will be enforced at some point. This joker doesn't have it in him to keep his nose clean for that long.
Yes Dale, the referee Clattenburg showed him the yellow for the celebration. But the referee cannot take into account the inflammatory remarks that Adebayor had made in the build-up to the game, where he claimed that:
"Arsenal have a lot of fans who are not fans. Arsenal have fans from America and Jamaica. Today they are Arsenal fans, tomorrow they will be Liverpool fans and after tomorrow they will be Manchester United fans."
That shows a lot of contempt.
And if you think stopping 20 yards short of the stands when you ran the length of the pitch to get there was a mitigating factor, you're as clueless as this miscreant.

Dale, Dale, Dale. Manu's action was in no way shape or form undertandable. It is a farce to the FA and Man City as a club and ultimately the fans. It is like I can resist arrest or taunt the arresting police officers because I was abused by my co-party goers. He may have thought that he was dead wrong so he stopped 20 yards from the fans. What a farce.

Dale, for once someone is telling the truth about this Adebayor's issue. What can he celebrate his goal? You want to boo a player that's fine and when the player scores against your team and celebrates take it like a man! End of story. It seems to me that Arsenal fans always have a problem with players living their team like A Cole with Chelsea. And I'm arsenal fan. Get over Ade and let's move on.

I feel sad that the FA has come to such a lowball decision. What makes the game rock? The fans....It does not mean that ADE can disrepect them in any shape or way.

Arsenal fans only boo players who leave the club and burn the bridge on the way out. When Pires was on the pitch last season the fans sang for him the whole match.

Man !! All i can say about this fellow Adebayor ,
This Dude lived his 1 day in glory for him self but i assure this he is gonna regret that day for all of his life.
players come & go, but glory always remains with clubs.
After 20 yrs i bet no 1 remember him as they will remember the likes of torres, kaka, messi, ronaldo, rooney, henry etc.
He will never have my RESPECT no matter even if he becomes highest goal scorer ever..... & i hope no kid see him as his idol & try to show there clubs (in future) the crazy n disrespected celebrations like he did.

"Arsenal have a lot of fans who are not fans. Arsenal have fans from America and Jamaica. Today they are Arsenal fans, tomorrow they will be Liverpool fans and after tomorrow they will be Manchester United fans."
What childish slander. So are you.Yesterday arsenal, today Man City,Tommorrow maybe you'll be applying for permanent British residence as you're sick of your poor country.

Thank you for taking the right approach, Dale.
I don't understand where is the problem. You can boo a player, verbaly abuse him, that's ok. He scores against you and celebrates it's a problem. No dear arsenal fans you cannot have it both ways. Ade is not good for you and you want him out ok! He scores against you and celebrates, more power to him. I love Ade

FA is very wrong, that guy should ban for 3 more matchs. how about the Fan who got ban for 3 years.
FA YOU ARE VERY WRONG.

Arsenal's away support lost the right to be offended when they went on the offensive. Its one thing to tease and taunt a player, quite another to engage in chants that at best are tasteless and worst borderline racist.
While Adebayor's celebration may indeed have been unprofessional and juvenile, that in no way gave the fans of Arsenal justification to engage in violent behavior no matter how aggrieved or outraged they felt, and that goes for supporters of all clubs as well). Adebayor's behavior was reprehensible, but that does not absolve Arsenal's away supporters of their share of the blame.

I dont care about the ban, he is immature and he will make several more mistakes as he cannot shut his mouth and just play. Arsenal are better off without him, fighting with fellow team mates, talk about leaving every chance he could, off side 10 times a game, not putting in an effort on the field and lack of respect for the team and the fans

Yes Mr Simon Peter i got my facts right. All those players have something against Arsenal. Why? Go ask Jans Lehman, Pires. Wayne Rooney always celebrate against Everton after they boo him all game long but do Everton fans want to fight? i guess not. You boo the guy let him celebrate his goal.Did you here what Tevez said about MU fans after they booed him? Players do have feelings too. Get a life

I would prefer he was banned for a game or so, but I think the FA have probably done the right thing here on balance. Giving him a suspended ban avoids what UEFA did by doing nothing and avoids sending out a message that it's ok to intnetionally incite and taunt opposition fans (and let's not forget he ran to theother end of the pitch, if he'd scored in front of them I would take a different view).
Plus it avoids the fact that they've ignored several other incidents over the last few weeks, which you mentioned.
Adebayor is a joker and he will never be a great player because of his attitude. As I've said before, just wait till City don't make the top 4 and see who's first to try and get out the door. It won't be his fault of course either. It never is.

I watched that game on TV here in Australia and for the life of me I cannot understand what all the fuss is about. Adebayor scored a goal and celebrated in front of the precious Arse-wipe fans. I saw how these so called fans reacted and it disgusted me. The so called Arse-wipe fans I saw were no more than drunken thugs and serious consideration should be given to banning alcohol at soccer games. I firmly believe that Adebayor deliberately injured RVP and he got his penalty for that.

Adebayor din have any fault, it jz show his satisfaction to arsenal.

Don't agree Adebabayor's behaviour was a rush of blood. Remember Drogba's celebration when he scored the goal against Liverpool in last season's Champions League quarter-final? Initially he went to the corner to celebrate, but all of the sudden he turned and dashed back to the mid-way line and celebrated in front of Benitez. Adebayor was inspired by this coward.

A player with no soul and class will never be respected. They(Man city) can have him, juz imagined young kids living in man city idolizing and follow his actions, the thought of it makes me disgusted. I will never educate my sons in this behaviour. Good Luck city fans, for getting an idiot with no class at 25 millions, eventually selling him for 2.5 mil if he still worth it. To sum it up, the idiot own what he has today to arsene and arsenal, Arsenal do not own him anything and treat him well. He choose to left for money and he will do it again and again.
He will never ever be succeeded as a top top player without a humble attitude.

I am an Arsenal fan and I did not have a problem with the celebration. What player or person wouldn't love to do that? The FA also did the right thing. A yellow card is all that is needed. Yes some Arsenal fans hated him over last season, and it got very ugly. My problem with Ade is with his comments about "American & Jamaican Fans". I am an American Arsenal fan and I followed him there and with the Togo national team. He was one of my favorite players. His comment was completely ignorant.
Does he really think that the majority of the 60,000 fans at Emirates are American & Jamaican? Fans can be cowardly and hurl insults in a group and hide behind that. He should have addressed those people. Instead he blames it on too many American & Jamaican fans. You leaving Arsenal sucked for me. Now I see your true colors, I am glad you're gone. You are no Henry, so stop trying to compare yourself to him.

Man city are disgusting. The chants were not racist, this was made up to defend Adebayor. I was there. Really pathetic that they would sink this low--accusing arsenal supporters of racism--to exonerate a player.

Look at Tevez, when he scored against West Ham he raised his hand almost apologetically as though he was saying "sorry guys". That's class. Adebayor should have taken it like a man and not some spoilt child... I mean if you're gonna be chasing money, of course the club which you left will bear some grudge against you, so face it. Do not complain or give excuses like a wimp. Arsenal trained him from obscurity, pulling him out from Monaco (they did make the UCL final though so no offense meant) and this is the kind of gratitude Wenger and Arsenal's fans get.
The decision the FA has made is suitable as it might have been an 'in the heat of the moment' occasion but i am more concerned about the kind of example Adebayor is setting for aspiring and rising young footballers.

Well being that gary neville got off for what he did i think its fair and well deserved that adebayor got off. He is a star player of the game and incredible to watch and the more he playes the better for football!

Well, the fans make the game tick but that doesn't allow them to abuse the players. If they decide to boo a player then they should make sure they have the balls to take the returned favour.
Arsenal fans sang for Pires through out his game against Arsenal. Why? Because he's long passed his best, methink. Many Arsenal fans simply can't get over those players who left while still in their prime. I can't wait for the day Fabregas returns to the Emirates stadium in Barcelona's colour.

What I want to know is how does Bellamy get away unscathed after PUNCHING a fan and this gets blown up for Adebayor CELEBRATING in front of fans!!!

Many players have left Arsenal, with the supporters respect and good wishes - Overmaars, Pires, Henry, Vieira, etc. But as for Adebayor - good riddance to bad rubbish.

Posted by Marlon Treasure on 10/02/2009
All the players who do not show the respect to the club will incur the wrath of the masses anywhere you go but to defy them and look to rub it in will not fly.
Ashley Cole left because he wanted more money and the captaincy he didn't get it so he felt slighted. Anelka, Bently, Kanu celebrated but nothing like Ade'buy'ur's. He show no class neither does cole for continually harboring his resentment.
Anelka left because of the fans, he says but all the others who have left have returned in some form or the other and have endured gratitude by thiose same fans.
Yes ARSENAL has Jamaican, and will forever have at least one jamaican fan. Good football will pull people.
Remember he was the one to say if your heart is not in the club then leave, in relation to REYES. So if your heart ain't in it then he should have left with out the excuses.
Class is class arsenal is not a club, it is an institution -

I don't condone what Ade did but you have to wonder why Neville didn't receive any punishment, no card no threat of a ban, no fine for doing exactly the same thing in the Man U vs Man City game. Is it because he never played for City? More likely it is because it was a Man U player and we all know that they are given more protection from referees than any other premier league team. Ade's a passioate guy and let's not remove passion from the sport. A former poster said that its the fans that make the game rock...I disagree. In most cases it is the fans who do most of the disrespectful things in sport and especially in soccer. Hurling racist comments or in many cases projectiles to me does not rock it actually tarnishes the game.

Adebayor's behaviour in the match against Arsenal was totally unacceptable, and it also proved to his former teammates and boss that, either he was unhappy amongst them, carrying grievance or just being plain disrespectful. And also to the fans who stood by the club, even when most times Mr.Adebayor proved to be a failure who couldn't find that goal poacher instinct to finish off a few simple chances to get rid of our opponents who were sometimes easy as the chances he got. In my opinion, the way he reacted, he certainly looked stupid because those three points will never get him to the UCL not to mention the league title. UPSET PATRIOTIC GUNNERS FAN FROM JAMAICA.ONE LOVE
