The FA have handed a double charge to Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor following his mindless antics against his former club Arsenal at the weekend and let's hope they follow through with the maximum punishment - a cumulative five-match ban.
After scoring City's third goal in the 4-2 win over the Gunners the Togo striker, complete with knowing grin, galloped the length of the Eastlands pitch to celebrate in front of the travelling support, which resulted in furious fans throwing missiles and jostling stewards.
Those scenes were ugly, but the stud-marks Adebayor left on the bloodied face of former colleague Robin Van Persie were an abomination. Van Persie later claimed he had been the victim of a "mindless and malicious stamp" and the FA certainly seem to agree that there was intent.
Referee Mark Clattenburg admitted that he did not see this incident, but had he done so Adebayor would have been sent off for violent conduct. That alone would carry a three-match suspension, but factor in the dubious tackle on Cesc Fàbregas and the huge effort it took to purposefully taunt the opposing fans and the striker needs to be made an example of.
Those who make flimsy excuses for Adebayor about being caught up in the emotion of the moment, having been jeered by the Arsenal fans for most of the match, need to remember that not all players incite the fans of their old clubs and stamp on heads of former team-mates.
In fact, on the same Saturday on which Adebayor made such a fool of himself we saw one such example.
Former Hull City defender Michael Turner scored on his debut (well it was later given as a Kamil Zayatte own goal, but it was Turner's header) for his new club Sunderland against his old employers and then held up his hand to the Tigers fans as if to say "sorry, but I'm doing my job".
Compare that with the reaction of Adebayor. Yes, Turner was not jeered by the fans who once backed him but that was because of his general professionalism and personal conduct.
Had Adebayor not demanded a huge salary increase after one good season in an Arsenal shirt, agitated for a move to AC Milan when the cash wasn't forthcoming and then headed to Eastland's for a bumper pay-day following a half-baked season at the Emirates then his standing with the fans might not have been so bad.
Conversely, Turner helped Hull to win promotion to the Premier League, played with commitment as the club remained in the top flight and then quietly moved to Sunderland when the Tigers somewhat surprisingly accepted the Black Cats' transfer bid. As a result, Turner retained the respect of the fans. Presumably he is now standing on the moral high ground shaking his head at the antics of Adebayor.
The Togo striker's old colleagues at Arsenal put it best when they accused him of acting with a lack of "class". Hopefully he will have a five-match period on the sidelines to think that over.

Agreed fully. And there is no doubt that Adebayor's stamp on v. Persie was intentional. There is one angle where you can see Adebayor raise his foot and slam it down on v. Persie's face at a pace much faster than if he was simply taking another step, and his leg and foot go out at an angle that is much wider than if he was just taking another step. He should be suspended for four or five games for that alone and another three matches for his intentional incitement at the Arsenal supporters' end. He is classless and reaffirmed that Wenger's decision to sell him was a good one.

Couldn't agree more. From the tackle on Fabregas onwards, anyone could already sense Adebayor was out to do some damage physically. But the studs to the face of a ex-teammate is really criminal. Considering Robin is already on the ground back against Adebayor with no chance of avoiding that attack. This is really ugly.
The goal celebration, reason being emotions. If one took off his shirt celebrating a goal is warranted a yellow, I believe this is a straight red card. Irresponsible to say the least. Will he be ready to take full responsibility if something nasty broke out between the supporters?
GROW UP ADEBAYOR!

If Gary Neville was banned and fined for doing the same thing during a game against Liverpool in 2006, why Should Adebayor be the exception? The FA needs to be fair and consitent with their rulings.

He deserved it! what a disgrace to the game and his team... you are a professional and so what if emotions take over your head, it's not the way to react.

Hey Mate, Adebayor has done something wrong but does he have to be "killed", he has apologized to all and sundry and has shown remorse, this just show how many fans has come to accept Man City as a legitimate contenders. With the Manchester derby coming up, then everyone is scared of Adebayor's threat.
He is a professional player and he has the right to ask for more money like is mates in the league. Hence, the move. Arsenal want them "Cheap and Young" but they will always mature and ask for their "Rights".
Where is Ronaldo today? How much is Messi earning, Terry, Lampard, Rooney, Gerrald? Let just hope that the FA gives him a warning and fine, suspension is outta it.
Look at Eduardo reversed ban? Let not make "Something out of Nothing". Go City Go!!!

Well put. Adebayor acted like a malicious, spoiled child.

Or you have another example in the same game - Kolo Toure. When he left most Arsenal fans thanked him for his efforts and let him go in peace. The problem with Adebayor is mentioned above and since all he's done is talk bad about Arsenal and has insulted the fans. I think they have every right to jeer him.

Van Persie ran in front of the City fans and gestured toward them after scoring his goal.... no punishment??
Also, how come RVP's 2 FOOTED challenge on Ade right before the alleged "stamp" will go unpunished?? Only for the fact that Ade jumped up out of the way was he not completely taken out!!
One rule for the 'Big 4' and one rule for the rest!!
Hypocrites!!!!!

Spot on soccernet comment... I must say that during his time at Arsenal most of us supporters often wondered if he even wanted to play. Especially last season when he often looked lazy and as if his mind were wondering off. He should take a look at his old compatriot Eboue, who had a very tough time last year, but he has certianly matured and got on with his business and was my man of match in the second leg against Celtic.
Adebayor is a horrible footballer in terms of proffessionalism but a very gifted striker when he works for the team and does what he is good at..

Spot on. I am an Arsenal supporter and I didn't want to see Adebayor leave the club since his ability is obvious to see and the cash does not seem to be there for a replacement, but his actions have proven what kind of a person he is, and I can't fault Wenger's decision. His goals might keep us out of the top 4, but hopefully the forthcoming suspension and African Cup of Nations can put a stop to his form.

What about RVP taunting city fans and swearing at them that's fine I guess cos hes a big 4 player. From some angles Ady was merely trying to get his feet back under himself after a reckless challenge from Van Persie and with possessing lanky limbs had trouble finding a place to put them. There is a case to be answered but the man did nothing worse than Rooney or Neville or many others put away your anti city stance because ew are here to stay

You are not fair to Adebayor at all with your comment. Adebayor and Turner do not have the same status at all......

Adebayo is a good player, he wasn't suppose to put up the drama he did at the Manchester stadium. I hope he learns something from that and also learns to settle your grievances with former clubs is to play well against them and not muck them.

It was really unprofessional on Ade's behalf for both incidents. He's performing on an international scene and so many children are watching this all over the world. Is this what is meant to be a Professional Football player for EPL? Provocating fans and causing injuries to other players.
One should bear this heavy responsibility while performing on such a stage and neither be intimidated by fans nor use fans as an excuse.
Players are being paid huge sums to perform and set examples for younger ones. Match-ban or fine isn't enough in this case. Ade should come before the media and make an official excuse to everyone concerned and a message to younger ones that this is not an example to follow in whatever circumstances while playing football at any level.
A hefty ban/fine should follow so that others will learn from this.

How can an international player act like a kid? Really hope that he will be given more charges and bans by the FA. Serve him right for this kinda of foolish behaviour

Ade is no doubt a good player, but he's not as good as he thinks he is. His inconsistency is staggering.. he's not professional when it comes to situations such as this, and his head is up in the clouds. No doubt his stamp on v.persie's face was intentional, and his true colors are shown when he couldn't even own up to it.
It's caught on camera and a million people saw what he did, but still has the balls to deny what he did was wrong. Mark Hughes wasn't even quick to protect Ade's actions, all he could say was "he's an emotional fella", which is total bull. Every human being is emotional, the difference between Ade and the professionals is that Ade is unable to control his emotions.
You can't blame the Arsenal fans, you can't say that the Gooners are immature because when Henry left, we didn't go on a witch hunt after him. Ade is a joke, and I hope he gets what he deserves

3 weeks for the stamping and 3 weeks for the goal celebration. That will be the outcome, but it should be a lot longer. The good thing to come out of it will be that Arsenal will be above Manchester City on the table after the 6 week holiday he goes on ... fair enough to.

I did not have much problem with him before leaving Arsenal - But since leaving, he has been on and on hitting back at the old club and fans.
Stamping on someone in the floor is horrible and act of coward. I also believe the stamp on Fabregas ankle was intentional.

What Ade done on that game was terrible, maybe most of the guys missed he kicked Song and Song kicked him back and got cautioned. He did said Song and him is good mates off the pitch before the game, but why any one can kick their "friend" or old mates intentionally? Harming 3 people in just 90 mins, this is totally disgrace for a human being. If the ref is fair enough, Ade should already been sent off in that match. He should deserve at least 6 match ban for what he had done on that match.
Some City fans are saying v.persie is celebrating in front of the City crowd and deserving ban as well. Oh, come on. You are the home side, of course it wil be crowded with the home fans. Maybe you are expecting away players shouldn't celebrate and keep slient after scoring goals. Please think before comment.

did Luis Figo reacted as moronic Adebayor!
He was far more abused and cursed by Barcelona fans when he joined Madrid! .. he reacted professionally.
If refree spoted the foul on Persie.. Man city would have ended with 10 players and result might be reversed! and he could have been Zero and not Hero!.. its shear luck that he stayed on field after the incident!

I am an Arsenal fan , I have been very disapointed with their form of the last 4 years , I think the way the board has run the club and they way Wenger has run the transfer market has been wrong , they probably will loose Cesc , and Denilson next summer during or after the world cup .
About Adebayor , well it was wrong to bring him in , in the first place , he treated Arsenal as a stepping stone to go to bigger clubs , he never had the intention to stay in the club , I think a serious hefty ban and a nice lenghty suspension are in order , because he just wanted to justify his reasons for leaving the club citing bad treatment from the fans and some of the players , by stamping them in their faces , if he had any issues with the players take them to court , don't take your own revenge , we are in the 21st century .

YOU'RE RIGHT ...ADEBAYOR IS STUPID AND TURNER IS A TRUE PROFESSIONAL...THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE.

From my own view i dont think ady steppind on the fce of persi was intentional but i strongly believe that provoking fans especially of your immediate former club is not the best way of celebrating gols. i believe the FA would give a fair judgement concerning this scenarios

First of all, Greater Manchester Police have received a complaint regarding Van Persie's goal "celebration" in the 62nd minute when he ran towards and swore at City fans in the South Stand. The Police are now likely to refer the matter to the F.A., according to news reports. There have also rumours of racist taunts towards Adebayor prior to any incidents. As you may be aware, the authorities have no problem handing out severe penalties if these rumours are true. Once the F.A. reviews the "stamp" footage they will no doubt see Van Persie's two footed lunge at Adebayor which could have broken his leg or ended his career (hence, him laying on his back "defenseless"). What a joke! All in all, Arsenal, the fans and club, may end up regretting stirring up these incidents. It would hardly be shocking if they end up being penalized for the behaviour of their fans and players.

Secondly, Arsenal are clearly not good enough. People on here looking for a player of another team to be suspended so that they can finish above them says it all. City have some amazing players and were good in patches last Saturday, however they were not that great. Yet they stuffed FOUR goals past Arsenal. No one can claim that the 2 incidents had anything to do with the result. I suppose as long as they can keep up a fuss about the behaviour of Adebayor (and now Hughes!!! They will be complaining about the lady that serves the half-time tea next), it will serve as a screen to hide just how "vulnerable" (ie. poor and average / crap) Arsenal really are.

The question is not whether big 4 clubs get away with it or not. The answer is Adebayor acted like an unprofessional and needs to accept that a flimsy excuse like "emotions" does not allow you to get away with actions like that. Turner may not be in the same vein with Adebayor but did Bebartov run to celebrate in front of Tottenham fans in last season's fixture even though he was jeered?
The stamp on Van persie's face may be a cause of contention but with video evidence, there are many who could feel the intent. Once again its not a case of discrimination but acts like this just cannot go unpunished. I do not see anyone from big 4 clubs or any other clubs trying to take a piece of a former teammate's face with their boots.

Wow. A possible 5 match ban for nearly inciting a riot that led to a steward getting knocked out cold and an intentional stamp (argueably the second one of the day) that came dangerously close to RVP's eye?
How about a season long ban accompanied by a psychological assessment and 100 hours of community service?
