When the draw was made, two names jumped immediately into the spotlight. They had swapped teams over the summer and were then promptly drawn together in Group F; Samuel Eto’o and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were never going to get an easy transition to their new surroundings.

• Wenger: Winner was inevitable
• Harris: Gunners provide the thrills
• Carter: A tale of two strikers
• Benitez: Result was important thing
• Wednesday UCL Gallery

Indeed, the talk before the game had been of the reception that Zlatan would receive from the San Siro faithful. He had not exactly been complimentary about the Italian side upon his departure and had stirred up some interesting comments from his former team-mates. However, if there was anyone hoping for an Adebayor-style baiting, they were left disappointed.

The smiles and banter in the tunnel beforehand suggested that it would be easier night for Ibra’s ears, if not his legs, than many anticipated. And so it proved when he stepped on the pitch. His first touch was swiftly followed by a failure to reach Dani Alves’ cross, but he soon had a better chance - blazing over, when he really should have done better. The jeers were lost amid the celebrations that he had not scored.

Barcelona certainly started the brightest, while Ibrahimovic shone above his rival early on too. Showing all the technique and touch that made him such a star in Italy, the Swede seems a focal point for the runs of fast forwards like Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry; while his power and aerial ability make him the ideal central striker.

Ultimately, he may not prove to have the same devastating impact at the Nou Camp as Eto’o though. The Cameroonian showed that the Swede was not the only quality striker on the pitch with a sublime nutmeg on Gerard Pique, although was not able to capitalise on one of his few chances.

Looking a dangerous prospect with the ball at his feet when he got it, Eto’o suffered from a lack of support as the Inter midfield failed to get him enough of the ball. Ibrahimovic often made things happen one-on-one while at the club and, on this evidence, Eto’o may have to do the same.

Despite both strikers’ inability to break the deadlock, the noise level towards Ibrahimovic increased in the second half. The Swede put in a late tackle and then went to ground too easily under a challenge from Walter Samuel, much to the annoyance of the Italian fans; but once again he failed to silence them when he spurned a good chance when he lifted the ball over the ‘keeper and onto the roof of net.

Frustration growing, Inter (and Eto’o) made little impact after the half. But then Barcelona (and Ibrahimovic) could hardly find their shooting boots either. Neither forward-line appeared able to stay onside, while Jose Mourinho’s negativity meant that it was difficult for Inter to do anything but hold off their Spanish opponents.

In the end, so much hype at the clash of the two strikers meant that a 0-0 scoreline probably left fans from either side feeling that they had missed out.

Ibrahimovic has suffered from criticism that he cannot play at the highest level in the past and he was unable to shake that tag against his old side. But then Eto’o did not add much weight to the claims that he can be the man to transform Inter into Champions League contenders. Much work to do on both sides of the biggest swap deal in the game's history.

Ibrahimovic has suffered... I am sure he could care less about what critics say about him. Eto´o disappearead for 88 minutes in that game and that is being nice. Considering this is only his fifth game for Barca, I am sure he will be just fine and lifting a player of the year much to many critics annoyance.

Zlatan is playing a different role at barca. He is learning to play with the team rather than being the star of the team. Much like how henry had to adjust when coming from arsenal. The more he plays he more he will get used to the system at barca as well as the players around him.
It is way to early to be talking about contenders anyway, it was a draw. The fact of the matter is that both inter and barca will prevail from this group. the only question is in what order will they progress. In all the outcome of this match is not very significant. How these teams cope against the other two teams in the group will be much more telling in the end.

Posted by emmanuel daniel on 09/16/2009

inter did a great job. i dont think there is any contention that barca is about the best team in the world and so it will be unwise for anyone to expect that inter will come out to play free flow football, when you do that with barca, you find yourself to blame. inter is a team that has improved tremendously compared to last season. their last two games have been encouraging. inter is a future team. thanks mourinho, thanks eto'o and that all inter team players.

Posted by daniel on 09/16/2009

everyone likes to hate ibra but sven said it, its only his fifth game for barca and once he fits in he will add a whole new dimension to barca. he is almost like the opposite of messi, where messi relies on quickness ibra relies on strength. but i think it will work because both are fantastic, just give it time

Posted by Zamorano on 09/16/2009

To sven: you must have been watching a rerun of the US open to think any player can play the game of soccer alone. Eto'o's performance was okay given that he did not recieve the required support from the midfield. Barcelona and Ibra, wasted alot of chances, but again Eto'o was once in Ibra position and netted goals when it counted.
Wait and see what eto'o will do in the return match at the nou camp. He will play them like he has always played Real Madrid, with recentment and extra conviction to make them regret their decision to kick him out. It will be an Eto'o performance to remember.

Posted by Matt on 09/16/2009

Both players are great strikers in their own respect and both will have wonderful impacts for their teams (as seen with the goals scored already). People just wanna see an Adebayor type story for the drama, and then when it happens, they'll shun the 2 players and say its killing the game. So for me, I think both players handled the situation classy gentleman; and that is were more praise needs to be handed. It'll take a whole season to see which team benefited more. As a Barca fan, I only wish Jose Mourinho would still play football when going against big clubs. He has the talent, but opts for conservatism like Chelsea in Champs League last year vs Barca. Barcelona = Class

Posted by LoPo on 09/16/2009

For Inter to shut out, it's more impressive than anything else. They are the ones introducing so many new players - Schneider, Eto'o, Milito, Motta, Lucio, etc. Barcalona had their core in place AND added a top 5 soccer talent. They should have come out with the result but didn't. This should be very encouraging for Inter.

Posted by marco on 09/16/2009

Both Ibrahimovic and Eto'o played poorly by their own standards, but since Ibra was provided much better service he was the larger disappointment.

Posted by Conteh on 09/16/2009

There is much to come of the two strikers. I think we need some patience. The style of play is completely different between the two teams. Ibra is a skillful player in a team that can hold on to the ball for long where as Eto'o skills is limited to the team style of play. He therfore deserves some compliments in such a transition.

Posted by shu on 09/16/2009

I know all cannot see the same way. Most people have spent their time comparing Ibra and Eto'o, especially the first person who said Eo'o was lost in 88 minutes, and that Ibra has played only 5 matches with Barca. How many matches has Eto'o played with Int? Think of this time last year: by the 5th match last year, how many goals had Eto'o scored for Barca. I am of the oinion that Eto'o will make Barca regret at the Nou Camp. Eto'o really lacked the support from his midfilders today.

Posted by Mark Azih on 09/17/2009

Football is a team game, and singling out Ibrahimovic and Eto'o for special attention amounts to a dis-service to other players of Barcelona and Inter Milan. A professional footballer is normally more interested in delivering the goods for his current team, rather than try to teach his former coach a lesson. On that score, Ibrahimovic and Eto'o behaved like perfect role models on the night.

Posted by John on 09/17/2009

Zlatan needs some time to adapt to his new environment and to the style of play of his new team-mates. I am sure that he will get back to his form and may even become better soon

Posted by Bobby on 09/17/2009

Two great players playing against there old teams so soon after leaving. nothing to over-analyse about to be honest. both had solid games. should be left at that. Return leg at the Nou Camp is where it will all happen

Posted by Matt on 09/17/2009

Inter's defending couldn't have been better, particularly Lucio and Samuel, and Barca still threatened to prise an opening. I honestly thought Ibrahimovic played a decent game, however I think he could have been more direct on a few occasions. He seemed all too eager to pass the ball on or try to play a teammate through with a flick rather than assume responsibility and have a crack when he got the ball in positions in the box. Even though he had a defender up his backside every time he had the ball in the penalty area, a quick first touch to turn and then hit could have yielded a breakthrough. Eto'o did fairly well himself given that Inter spent most of their time behind the ball. If only Ibra had scored from that early volley...it would have been a real spectacle then.

I can almost guarantee that Eto'o will not be scoring on his return to Camp Nou. Look at how Mourinho played when his side were at home. I can only imagine how he will have his team play when they are in Barcelona. I'm expecting another 0-0 in that match, unless Barca is somehow able to break through Inter's defense or Inter scores a wonder goal like Essien scored at Stamford Bridge last year.

Posted by dave on 09/17/2009

didn't want to see eto'o go but I think both teams needed fresh faces up front.who will get the better of the deals time will tell.Barcelona is still the best team in the world with or without Eto'o.Look out for the return match when both teams have more games under their belts.

Eto'o is a character of his own. he shows discipline and commitment to his team. I am sure he will teach Ibra a lesson or two in Nou Camp

Posted by shehzad on 09/17/2009

barca were dominant. inter got lucky to sneak out with a point. Morinho's 'negativity' will only take Inter so far.

Posted by Nilesh Kumar on 09/17/2009

It was a nice game. Hat's off to Inter to hold barca attack. I think Inter played a good game. Especially defence. As Inter supporter was happy witht he result. I think we had some good chances which we didn't use it well. For Barca it was a disappointing start. 3 to 4 players were marking Eto'o. Compared to Inter were doing man to man marking. Go INTER>>>>>

Both Eto'o and Ibra are very good strikers but u tell me to choose i will take Eto'o bcos he can adapt to any game even if monkey post game, Ibra is new at barca same as to eto'o but u will see he is one man riot.
what i see is that new barca coach has personal hatred on the boy Eto'o cos i can't see where a club will sale their heat man no matter what, one of the highest goal scorer in spain and Europe.
Giving Eto'o with one other ex Arsenal mid fielder with millions of dollars in ex-cahnge of Ibra means there's hiden agenda which they don't want to disclose cos i never hear pep comment on why he throw out such a talented player.

Posted by Coco on 09/17/2009

To Zamorano,

I definitely agree with you! Eto'o will make Barca regret selling him in the return match! You are exactly correct! Ibrahimovic is too over-hyped.. I mean, seriously, we all know that Ibra can't do for Barca what Eto'o has done and time will prove it

Posted by donastar on 09/17/2009

i think both players played well , ibra is a very good player that will score any time but i think Etoo is more nice than ibra, if Etoo played along side with barcelona yesterday , i think he could have score cus that is the kind of game u see etoo run arround the pitch looking 4 where he will sneak and get the goel, and the team barca already know him 4 that. anyway they played well and i think the return leg will show us who is the best.

Posted by Kola on 09/17/2009

A Draw Is exactly what I expected. Good result for Inter-Milan. Barca don't have the power they had last year, I think every team has figured out how to deal with.

Take it or leave it Eto'o is a proven striker, it's clear Pape never liked on his team in the first place but with his performance he couldn't ignore him. Sven I don't know how you see football but if Eto'o was still on Barca he would have put away at least one chance that Ibra got. Inter as a team created almost nothing, I don't think Ibrah will be an impact player for Barca that Eto'o will be for Inter. I guess time will tell

inter milan did a great job today,i think both team would have settel for the draw. If zlatan Ibrahimovic can't score goals with a team like barcelona in champions league he will never score with none other clubs in europe.

Posted by Yosi on 09/17/2009

I don't understand why Eto'o never, ever, gets all the credit he deserves for his superb goal scoring skills. He manages close to 30 goals per season, yet Barca treat him like a piece of shit, the media never recognizes his exceptional talent, and despite it all, Eto'o keeps getting better and better. Is it his skin color that's the problem for everyone?

Posted by Ekene Egbo on 09/17/2009

I was hoping to see Inter win Champions with the help of my brother, Eto'o who gave them the club the cup last year against Man U. i believe in they next game that the Inter performance will not be the same as last nite game.

Looking at mourinho, you know that his best tearm he ever dream to win was last nite game but we still have chance in future my able man mourinho, inter did a great job. i dont think there is any contention that barca is about the best team in the world.

was hoping to see Eto'o to do what Adebayor did to his old Arsenal in England were everyone was disappointed, Eto'o this is what i need over Barcelona, like malaysians said, malaysia gives and malaysian take, Eto'o take it as you are the one that gave that cup to Barcelona.

@ Zamorano. Lol! Have you seen Eto'o or Ibra before? Eto'o made a lot of goals for sure but he wasted a lot of chances aswell. Ibra have made a lot of crucial goals for both Inter and Sweden. Don't make them into something they aint.

Posted by Ferris on 09/17/2009

Inter parked the bus infront of goal in the second half. To do that, whilst at home to save a draw, is a massive compliment to your opposition.

You can not win the Champions League by killing each game with a draw. If Inter were serious about winning the League this year, they will have to learn how to play against teams like Barca.

The first half was an awesome game, some great chances both ways, free flowing football, the players got to show their skills. The second half was killed by Inter's "game plan".

As i said before, fighting for draws does not win you cups.

Posted by The One on 09/17/2009

good game, barcelona were the better team but considering that 50% of inter is new i think they played well and i tip them to win in spain

But Zamorano, many Inter fans said he'd do that in the first leg at home. Zlatan also missed a large part of the preseason because of an injury. He will continue to improve. I love them both, but Ibra was better today.

Posted by Ayoola Olanrewaju on 09/17/2009

I was the game with great feelings that it was going to be rains of GOALS...the truth is that BARCA where outstanding and i had expected a better performance from Ibra giving the support he got from Xavi,Henry and Messi...i still remember well the performance Eto'o used to put on while playing for BARCA....INTER i believe have alot of work to do before travelling to NOU CAMP as there performance was not impressive and they let Eto'o as a lone striker with no passes coming from the midfielder's....If i where to rate the two strikers....i think Eto'o is better giving the fact that he has always delivered while playing for BARCA in the same position IBRA played....As for IBRA we all still remembered how poorly he used to play when they play games big teams in the champions league....the memory of INTER vs MAN U is there for all to see and see how poorly IBRA played.to me i see IBRA as a local italian league champion and Eto'o a world class striker of our time football ever produce...

Posted by Evan on 09/17/2009

I don't think this result should surprise anyone. Both Eto'o and Ibra were able to sync very well with their previous clubs and have only been with their new ones for a short period of time. The lack of such chemistry is only going to be highlighted when two clubs of such quality meet. I expect that goals in the Champions League from both strikers might be few and far between this season despite their quality.

Posted by Daniel Lungu on 09/17/2009

Barca, played better than Inter, but i think the return game will not give inter, any option but to attack so it will be totally a different game all together.
Was impressed with both sides it was a very fair game no hustling,no violent on the pitch. To barca, & inter' well done keep up the spirit og the game thanks

Posted by jey on 09/17/2009

thanx to barca for the nice an entertaining football. its never too late for barca, ibra is just learning the way barca plays, soon he will know how to mingle with Xabi, Messi,Iniesta, and henry. this doesnt take away the quality of etoo. it was a great game but im sure we will win at the nou comp. viva barca and im sure we we will be the first team to defend the champions league crown

Posted by scott on 09/17/2009

This was Ibras fourth game.. Atleast he touched the ball alot. And Ibra is playing a new role. A role that he is picking up very fast

Posted by khaunglwan on 09/17/2009

i think uefa champion league competition system should be changed. for example, Arsenal has to play qualifying stage to enter group stage because Arsenal is no.4 at PL in last season. but in group stage , Arsenal is shortlisted as one of the top 8 team and group is divided according to that priority list. at here what i want to say is that any team which is classified as one of the top 8 teams, should not enter qualifying round like Arsenal did this year.
my one more proposition is that if all the top 4 English PL teams belong to top 8 of Europe, not only then they should not enter qualifying stage but also one more team from the league. mranked 5 team should be allowed to enter qualifying stage adding up to 5 team from that league.
thanks,

It's hard to see how Eto can play well against a well organised Barca team. If Inter could not keep the ball at the San Siro, it is difficult to see how they will do so at Nou Camp - of course, that means Eto will be isolated once again. I admire Eto as a striker and for all what he did for Barca. I think the swap deal was ridiculous. Perhaps it is time to stop talking about Ibra and Eto and focus on the two teams. From what I saw yesterday, Barca are way ahead of Inter at the moment.

Posted by julius manjengwa on 09/17/2009

I have watched Zlatan ever since his time at ajax.i think he is overrated as a striker. For barca to sell Etoo and get him i think there were a lot of non footballing factors involved.Etoo played so well for them and always played his best in the most important matches. He is on record as one of the few to have scored in 2 different champions league finals. He has the movement, he has the strength and above all the skill. If i look at Zlatan during his time at juventus he missed sitters against Liverpool in the 2005 champions league knockout stages and eventually juve went out. to me Zlatan lacks the movement etoo has.he doesnt go into the pockets spaces etoo finds himself in.he holds the ball too much and is very slow in his style of play and i am not sure if that will suit barcelona's style of play.barca confused teams last season with their movement and passing and didnt need any sort target man to hold the ball and play someone.they all moved stylishly.

Posted by Sylvester Okhade on 09/17/2009

I think both players had a fair game, they will definately improve with time.

Posted by bunmi on 09/17/2009

i very much agree with Sven about this match being Ibra's fifth game. but who has fit into his team most -Eto.yesterday's game was a case of two players playing for the wrong teams.Eto in Barca shirt y/day would have secured a win for Barca. ican bet on that.

Posted by Fatai BARCELONA on 09/17/2009

If we take a deep look at the match, Inter were too defensive, they dont paly football. The refree let them made away with so many fouls, Henry was kicked twice by Maicon without a single card.
We might not find the back of the net but we left with our head held high, where was Eto through out the match, Ibra shows how lethal he's with lot of assist and moves. Look at the possession 33% to 67%, poor Inter, let see who's going to top the group, when they come to Camp Nou, it'l be Barca 3 - Inter 0.
No team play better than Barcelona, the King and Champions of Europe. Up Barcelona!!!

Posted by msiz on 09/17/2009

im sorry but zlatan is just too weak for barcelona the coach didnt sub him ,why i dont know ETO IS MUCh BETTER THAN ZLATaN.barcelona will miss eto.bojan is even better than zlatan

Posted by Sam on 09/17/2009

Eto doesn't gets the much needed support from the midfield at inter.Inter were outplayed by barca and if it were not the excellency by the two central defenders ,inter would have conceded as many as 5 goals.Barca are a complete team and while inter is a team under construction.Anyway it was a nice game and it is too early to blame the two strikers for failing to deliver the goods.

Posted by wale manchester on 09/17/2009

Eto'o is better than Zlatan in my own view. Eto'o will surely score at camp Nou when next they meet. Jose would need to work on the mid field so that Eto'o and Milito can get more support. Eto'o am sure you are reading this, please go for the kill and do not celebrate the way Adebayor did when you punish Barcelona.

Posted by LAWAL on 09/17/2009

Just that Eto'o did not to get the required support from the midfield, all the same,he had dangerous touches at the night. He showed a vehemence that still haunts Ibra's dream.Forget any sentiments, Barca will later bite a finger for treating him (Eto'o) that way.

Posted by emy on 09/17/2009

Posted by bode on 09/17/2009

to be candid, both strikers did not live up to the pre-match hype. however, if we take into factor the swot analysis of each player, you will note that Eto is renowned for his through runs and no nonsense attitude towards goal, while Ibra is known for is finesse. if we now take this attributes to the new teams they play for, you will notice that Eto didnot get the neccessary assistance from the midfield and anytime he got the better of his markers, he was fouled. Ibra on the other hand doesnot fit Barca's playing style as the midfielders do all the work and all they need is for the point man to put the ball in the net instead of making unwarranted touches. Barca needs a striker in the mould of Inzaghi or Nisteroy not Ibra. inter on the other hand need creativity in the midfield and not brute strenght. i however wish the two strikers the best in future

I think despite the scoreline it was a good match to watch.Ibra should have scored that earlier chance and the game could have improved. He needs time to settle, but that was a good chance that he wasted.Eto had no support from his midfield and the tactics in the 2nd half didnt help.OVERALL A GOOD RESULT FOR BOTH TEAMS

Posted by ANTHONY WISDOM on 09/17/2009

BARCA HAS BEEN A TEAM THAT IS KNOWN FOR GOOD MIDFIELD AND ATTACKING PLAY,SO TO MATCH A TEAM OF SUCH CALIBRE COACHES HAVE TO EMPLOY A GOOD TACTICS TO COUNTER THE PRESSURE. THOUGH THERE WERE TOO MANY LOOSED BALLS ON THE PART OF INTER BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO HOLD ON,GOOD DE3FENSIVE PLAY,0-0 IS A FAIR SCORE. INTER SHOULD IMPROVE GREATLY ON THEIR MIDFIELD AND ATTACKERS SHOULD ALWAYS TRY LONG RANGE SHOT AT GOAL, THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO DEFEAT A TEAM LIKE BARCA. INTER WILL PLAY BE BETTER WHEN THEY VISIT NOU DE CAMP, I TRUST MOURIHOM FOR GOOD TACTICS

Posted by ALan on 09/17/2009

Ibrahimovic has always flopped in big European games. At Juventus, Inter and he will for Barcelona too. He is an overrated player; Serie A has been in decline for years, losing its best players. It needed to boost up players to make them out to be better than they were. Ibrahimovic has good PR but not such good stats at the highest level.

Ibrahimovic's record in the Champions League is poor, his performances often rubbish. He is six feet 5 and has a great touch and good imagination and power. But he is not a top class goalscorer like Torres, Eto'o, C.Ronaldo etc..who all do much better in the Champions League matches.

Barcelona lost a superior striker in Eto'o and paid 40 million along with him. Terrible business. But with Messi, Iniesta and Xavi they will keep winning anyway, even if Ibrahimovic proves to be very overrated.

Posted by mickeysoo on 09/17/2009

Well said zamorano.Had etoo been in ibrah's position i think he would have tucked one or two of the chances he had away.Inter tried playing a little deep in their own half to limit the one twos of barca's midfield and in doing that their strikers were isolated thus making etoo and milito fend for themselves.Ibra had it differently and the chances he spurned did not do him any good as he could not prove his doubters wrong.whether he will make the same impact as etoo did while he was at barca is still too early to call but i think etoo was the man on the day considering the limited support he had from his midfield and yet still was not lost in the game for 88mins as some would want us to believe .

Posted by Nfally Junior Manneh on 09/17/2009

The pace of Eto made much more positive differences for barca last seanson. With or without the ball his movements helped them(barca) alot, it give spaces to players like Messi, henry etc. Having to moved to inter barca will still be a force to reckon with but he (eto)surely will be missed. Ibra maybe good individually and possess all that skills but he is not a barca player, take this from me. As someone said he needs time to settle in that is still not an excuse. Ibra is agile and skillful but when it comes to comparing him to eto as far as barca system is concerned the swedes is not a team player. Just look at his movements without a ball. And barca needs a player who keep moving and creat spaces for other players .

I am a Barcelona fan and I have to say, Ibracadabra has dissapointed me. I've always personally felt Eto is the better player when playing the big games that count, he makes goals, Ibra does not. Eto is adjusting far more rapidly in the Italian league than Ibra is in the Spanish league. Ibra had 2 golden opportunities, Eto created 2 golden opportunities. I dont understand what adjustment you have to make when you miss goals on your own inside the box, Ibra simply choke's under pressure. Like I said, I am a Barcelona fan but letting him go has caused us the repeat of the treble.

Zamorano: Considering Inter hardly got out of their own half in the second period, atleast in long spells of it I find it hard to see how Eto's performance away from home will be a "performance to remember".
I'd love to put a tenner on that one.

Posted by blue on 09/17/2009

I agree with Zamorana. The inter mid fielders did not provide the necessary service to Eto. It was not a failure on Eto, but rather his supporting cast. this is probably because the barca team posess arguably the best mid fielders of today forcing inter mid fielders to play defensive. As for barca's ibra, service was not his problem, it was inter's defense. in my opinion he looked relaxed and lazy in which he totally depended on the skill of the barca midfield. it clearly displays how much of a no-show ibra is for Champions league/big games. Given those opportunities ibra had, eto would of finished on top. Guardiola's FEELING or whatever reasons for selling eto was madness because i saw evidence, being a huge barca fan, that barca lacked that hard worker that provided that final goal scoring touch. a barca team with eto would of destroyed an inter team with eto or ibra. as soon as morinho solves that play maker problem, watch out for eto, because it will be 3 or less touches and a goal

ok its a match up between ibra and eto @ the san siro as i never see much of samuel and ibra somewhat but its early days still has both strikers has score for there respective club side so the managers strategy both work in favour of pep as jose needed a win
