We knew it was going to happen in one group, but many had predicted that the gods of fate would decree that Cristiano Ronaldo should return to Manchester United.

Not so. While Ronaldo avoided the potential aggravation of playing against his old side, some of the summer's other biggest transfers were not so lucky.

Ronaldo's new Real team-mate Kaka will return to the San Siro to face an AC Milan still suffering after losing their gem. The Italian side are back in the competition after a year's absence, but their pre-season form suggests that they have not yet come to terms with the gaping hole left by the brilliant Brazilian.

The summer's other big story - the swap deal between Inter Milan and reigning champions Barcelona involving Samuel Eto'o and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - has also caused a stir in Group F. While Kaka is likely to be given a hero’s welcome at Milan (despite this being the same group of fans that booed Paolo Maldini at the end of his career), Eto'o and Ibra will not get such a warm reception.

Both have spoken out over various issues during their final days at their former clubs and the swap deal of the decade seemed suited to both parties. Ibrahimovic has been criticised for his role in big matches - most notably the Champions League - and Eto'o has been brought in to help Inter Milan win a competition in which they have failed to make much of an impression in the past. One of the two will surely surpass the other.

For the English sides, Manchester United look to have the worst draw. While their squad depth and experience in the competition suggests that they should progress, an away trip to the cauldron of Besiktas and the frozen pitch of CSKA Moscow won't be welcomed. They have also managed to pick up the hardest team from Pot 4 - Wolfsburg.

The German side, with Edin Dzeko and Grafite up front, will provide United with a stiff test; but not one that they can't overcome.

Liverpool, too, are in a difficult position as an impressive new-look Lyon and Fiorentina stand in their way. The French side smashed eight goals past Anderlecht in the qualifiers, with Lisandro Lopez looking an incredible signing, and Fiorentina (although not so impressive) will also provide stubborn opposition. Hungarian side Debreceni may not push them too hard, but if Romanian minnows FC Cluj were anything to go by last year then Liverpool may have to tread carefully.

The other two English teams, Chelsea and Arsenal, will be laughing. Chelsea's toughest test is FC Porto - a side shorn of Lisandro and the talent of Lucho Gonzalez - while Arsenal picked up probably the easiest draw in the competition with only AZ Alkmaar and Olympiakos standing between them and the knockout stages.

There may have been no reunion for Ronaldo but, as the Champions League always does, it reunited some old friends, and enemies.

You really think Man U has the hardest draw for england?? While I agree Wolfsburg is the hardest team from pot 4, the other two teams are no where near the quality of United.

Chelsea will be laughing? Fc Porto and Atletico Madrid both have more quality than Wolfsburg imo, and I would say either them or Liverpool have the hardest groups for an EPL team.

GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED AND THE REDS GO MARCHING ON ON ON!!

Posted by Tushar on 08/27/2009

Barca all the way....

Posted by Vincent on 08/27/2009

The distance will be what wears on ManU the most rather than the competition. Although Vagner Love and Matias Delgado of CSKA and Besiktas may give the United defence fits. I'm looking forward to watching the United game against Wolfsburg. That will be a little tricky.

Arsenal cruises on to the knockout stage. They are the best team in England and soon will prove they are the best in the world!

Posted by Reckaldo on 08/27/2009

Yup Chelsea will have a pretty stern test at the Vicente cauldron and in the Dragao so its not a cake walk for the Blues. While the red devils and the gunners will march on it doesn't look so pretty for the reds but in the end all four English team will make it tru

Yeah i'd accept all d groupings more especially barca/inter group.barca wil pay 4 what they did 2 our african star samuel eto.i predict inter toping d group.and also am wishin chelsea goodluck.up bluez, bluez 4 life.

Posted by Carlos on 08/27/2009

You gotta be kidding me if you think Chelsea will cruise through the group stage. Frankly, these soccernet writers are what really make me laugh sometimes. Atletico have a deep side and are playing incredible football together. And Porto? You think just because Lisandro and Lucho left their hopeless? Far from that. Hulk and Falcao have stepped up terrifically. If Chelsea think they're going to fly through this group stage, they seriously need to come up with a new game plan because it will not be easy.

Posted by Ben on 08/27/2009

I think the ESPN writers were trying to get across the fact that Chelsea and Arsenal are both guaranteed to make it through. True Porto and Atletico pay a high calibre of football, they're not in the same league as Chelsea and each rely on one or two stars to ensure progression, where as Chelsea is an entire team of stars. Manchester United will be worn down by the trips, teams, and conditions that they will be playing in, and yes Arsenal will go through top 100%, Liverpool has the hardest time of any English side. Lyon is revamped without Benzema and Fiorentina proves stubborn opposition, especially with Gilardino and Mutu against the Reds' weakened back line. All four English sides are going to go through, the question is, in what position of the group?

Posted by Mark on 08/27/2009

I do think Chelsea will find it hard. remember Drogba and Bosingwa have suspensions hanging on their heads. We have seen recently how toothless Chelsea are without Drogba. Chelsea might go through but I am ready to say here that they will not top the group.

Posted by Bassie on 08/27/2009

lets be honest the EPL squads should move on to the knockout stages quite easily. Group C is the toughest draw there is. Milan, Madrid, and Marce ( i know i spelled it wrong). Milan is finding its form, Madrid have the big guns, and Marce have improved during the transfer market. I can see Madrid thru but you could flip a coin between Milan and Marce. The other tough draw is Group F only because i see another inter collapse. If they can't gel i don't see them thru. Barca can make it thru with their B team

Posted by Carlos on 08/27/2009

See that's what people fail to realize. You think just because Chelsea has an entire team of stars they'll progress automatically? If that's the case then what happened to, let's say, Real Madrid the past few years? Come on, any real fan knows that a squad full of stars never means qualification. Another case in point - who the hell were Porto in 2004 when they won it? Deco, Carvalho, Ferreira, no one knew them. They were a balanced team though. That same year two of the biggest underdogs made it to the final. People really need to stop giving Chelsea so much credit.

For sure some soccernet writters seem not to be following what is happening within the football circles, how dare they think Athletico Madrid is weaker than CSKA? For heavens sake look the at the two groups again. Brushing them aside i think Chelsea's group is no easy at all, and i wouldnt hesitate to name it group of death knowing what Athletico Madrid, Porto and Chelsea can do, Also Liverpool's group is not apiece of cake to enjoy but i think Arsenal seems to have the biggest smile of all. Go make it the gunners.

Posted by Aaron on 08/27/2009

Arsenals group is by far the weakest group in the champions league. its so typical of them to get a weak group and then every gooner gets their hopes up until they play real competition and get beat

Posted by Rahul on 08/27/2009

Was this draw pre-determined for ratings? to have Barca-Inter and Madrid-Milan in the same groups seems too much of a coincidence considering this summer's transfer market. I am sure all 4 of them will progress, but too much of a coincidence for my liking.

Posted by kantu kantu, livingstone, zambia on 08/27/2009

Arsenal the gunners are not in uncompromising mood, the likes of Az Alkmaar,OLYMPIAKOS,Standard Liege should await cricket score lines.even though the Group is not a weaker one as it looks

Posted by Ryan on 08/27/2009

First, its not like the chose the group themselves... Second, whats wrong with getting your hopes up about your team? Third, its not like they suck, thats why Arsenal is included in the "Big Four". or do you think thats stupid too..

Posted by Charlie on 08/27/2009

For Arsenal are the best in England and Europe and i was very happy with the group. This year seems to be Arsenal's year , lets wait and see

Posted by cole on 08/27/2009

I dont think it would've mattered much who arsenal drew...at the moment they are playing arguably the best football of any team in europe and should only improve as they get players back from injuries. I expect them to breeze through the groups and if they continue their ways of late i wouldn't put it past them to give Barca a run for their money at the final in Madrid!

Posted by Luis on 08/27/2009

Porto Chelsea's toughest opponent?! *cough* Atletico Madrid

Posted by jason on 08/27/2009

Chelsea have a tougher draw than you make it out to be, but they are a stubborn, experienced team in Europe, adept at grinding out results in tough situations. Porto and Atletico have quality, but Liverpool showed Atletico the door last year with little trouble, and Porto, no matter what, needs time to recover from the loss of their two best players.

Posted by Laseno on 08/27/2009

Sum people think that the champions league is made for English teams but just look out for Lyon, Juve, AC Milan, Wolfsburg and not to mention the spanish teams who are at a higher level than years gone by. Real Madird will definately deliver this time. And to all those Chelsea fans underestimate Porto and Atheletico at your own cost.

Posted by the slatcher Jr on 08/27/2009

Reading comments from the audience, makes way much sense than these espn soccer writers. Besides 'soccer' doesnt exist as a word in Europe....'football' does. I hate the word 'soccer'. Besides the ECL is between Barca, Chelsea, and Madrid. Arsenal lacks depth, Man U, will fall short in the semi's. I would love to see Eto'o take Inter all the way, But the midfield is not strong enough. AC Milan, Juve are just to make the opposition get better along thier way. The following outliers; Lyon, Athletico, Wolfsburg, can cause a stir.

Posted by andy on 08/27/2009

There is nothing but respect for Eto'o. The Camp Nou would never boo him.

Posted by Shadrach on 08/27/2009

BLUE FOR THE TROPHY!!!!!!!!!

Posted by terry chriz on 08/27/2009

no too much comment until the first leg is placed.
but how ever chelsea is safe as well as arsenal.
up bluessssssssssssss

Posted by wil on 08/27/2009

Man unt all the way....ronaldo is not needed.team is much more rounded then focused on 1 ......red devils till the end....

Posted by Sian on 08/27/2009

Aaron you sound like you were Arsenal doesn't stand a chance. Well first of all Arsenal were unlucky. In 2004 we got knock out on away goal that season we finished unbeaten in the league. In 2006 we were better team compare to Barcelona we had so much position and every thing with 10 men but un luckily our keeper give a way cheap goals. again on last year in Semi- our 5 starter were out injure. Van Persie first match, Gallas, Clichy, and Arshavin ineligible. I'm really sure we had a really good chance if we had all our players fits.

Posted by Sian on 08/27/2009

Arsenal days are comming again...new era will begin and this time they will be better. yes we are the best this year.

Posted by mr jaka on 08/27/2009

man utd and chelsea have a tough draw..too easy for arsenal, i guess..

Posted by J on 08/27/2009

^^^typical for Arsenal to get a weak group? How long have you been watching footballe mate? I'd venture a guess of 2 months.

Posted by tim on 08/27/2009

Yeah, it's not like Arsenal have knocked out Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Roma, Real Madrid and Villarreal over the past few years...

Oh wait, they have.

Posted by chinonso on 08/27/2009

wel it is just a draw, i believe chelsea will come out of d group stage by playing thier best game, up chelsea.
