The so called favourites to top the group Germany were defeated by a determined Serbia side which played excellent football and didn’t allow many key German players into the game.

Serbia took full advantage of Miroslav Klose’s send off, scoring instantly after his departure. A 38th minute Milan Jovanovic goal was good enough for the White Eagles to claim a famous victory. It was a match full of drama, Lukas Podolski had the chance to put Germany level but his spot kick was saved by Vladimir Stojkovic in the 60th minute.

The Black Stars cut the wings of the White Eagles in a shocking performance by Radomir Antic’s men.

After a dull first half, Serbia looked the most likely to score but Milos Krasic didn’t take advantage of the space he was given in the 16 yard box as he blasted his shot straight at Ghana keeper Kingson.

Serbia was already down to ten men following Aleksandar Lukovic’s second yellow. This seemed to spark the White Eagles into action but substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic handballed in the 16 yard box with less then ten minutes to go, gifting the African giants a spot kick. Asamoah Gyan sent Vladimir Stojkovic the wrong way and gave Ghana their first points at this World Cup.

The World Cup in South Africa will be Serbia’s first appearance as an independent nation after previously competing under the flag of Yugoslavia, and later Serbia and Montenegro. As the Yugoslavs, their best performance at a World Cup was reaching the semi finals twice, once in the first tournament of 1930 and then again in 1962.

They reached the final of the European Championships on two occasions, but their best achievement at international level was winning Olympic Gold and winning the World Youth Cup in 1987. In recent years the youth team has been the shining light in Serbian football

With a team full of talent and pressure to succeed, who will be the player Radomir Antic will rely on when times are tough. That player who will produce magic and turn a game around.

Not many surprises in the squad. There is no room for rising star Adem Ljajic.

Here is the official 27 players Antic will choose from.

The players that I think Antic will drop if there are no injury concerns are in Bold.

Ivica Dragutinovic will miss this years World Cup finals after tearing his Achilles in a Sevilla training session.

The Sevilla defender was a key part of Serbia's qualifying campaign and he will be a big loss to the side. Although there is adequate cover, Drago was an insirational part of the squad. His excellent runs down the wing and fantastic crosses will be missed.
