It was labelled the ‘Group of Death’ with past European Champions AC Milan and Ajax in the mix, yet Real Madrid stormed through the competition as if it were a preseason warm-up campaign.
Madrid’s unblemished record has them atop the league and impressively through to the next round of the Champions League, but certain results have raised some, albeit minuscule, doubts throughout the capital.
Fifteen wins and three draws in their first eighteen competitive matches have high hopes at the Beranbeu, but one would be hard-pressed to find a Madridista who wouldn’t argue the nineteenth match on Monday will be the most telling test to date.
Looking back at the month of November, it seemed that it was going to be a gruelling test with Madrid needing to play their highest quality of football to arrive in December still the leaders in their respective competitions. To say they have done would be an understatement, as it stands they have played the best football in Europe this season; however, Monday’s trip to Barcelona for the 219th overall instalment of El Clasico will serve as a litmus test as to where the capital side stands in comparison to their Northern rivals (The 161st La Liga meeting between these two sides will take place on a Monday as to avoid conflicts with Catalonian elections. State police fear the two events occurring on the same day pose a security threat, though, some have speculated that it will give the hosts an extra day of rest with their Champions League tie on Wednesday in Athens).
Barcelona supporters may be quick to point to their side’s 8-0 drubbing of lowly Almeria at the weekend, but I would argue that Madrid’s 5-1 score line against a very capable Athletic Bilbao is much more impressive. Fernando Llorente, a rumoured Manchester United target, and his supporting staff forced Iker Casillas to be at his best at points; however, Madrid was the dominant side and very worthy of the score line. Tuesday night saw Mourinho’s men, who had already qualified for the next round needing only a point to secure the top of the table, again embarrass a competent opponent in Ajax. The resurgent (maybe a bit soon to go that far but a goal for France and the opener on Tuesday surely has the Frenchman in good graces in the Spanish capital) Karim Benzema would open things up on thirty-six minutes after brilliant work from Mesut Ozil with Ronaldo’s second half brace put things out of reach for the home side, is playing better than anyone in the world right now.
It is too early to speculate how this Madrid team, as well as they have started, will finish, but Monday should help to gauge where Los Blancos stand amongst Europe’s elite (granted Madrid has been the most impressive across Europe thus far, their lack of trophies over the past few years requires the constant comparison to those who have been conquering the silverware). Nonetheless, one cannot help but notice the improved overall quality at the Bernabeu from a season ago. Manuel Pellegrini was not a bad manager but just how much better is Jose Mourinho? Is the “Special One” just that special or have the likes of Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria opened up the field, creating more service into the area while giving Cristiano Ronaldo the freedom to demonstrate his quality? Last season’s Achilles’ heel, the back four, has been bolstered by the addition of veteran Ricardo Carvalho. Is it the Portuguese international’s presence in the centre of the defence, complimenting the organization of Sr. Casillas, that has seen Los Blancos only concede an unprecedented nine goals in those eighteen competitive matches or is it the restored confidence in players like Marcelo (whose head was being called for and despite a run of fine form, some pundits are still demanding an upgrade) from the new manager that is making all the difference in the back. Much like the Messi – Ronaldo debate, which will surely heat up across Spain in the coming days (and in the same way the aforementioned is a compromise between the two), the debate as to where credit is owed for Madrid’s stellar start lies somewhere in-between. Monday’s match will be Madrid’s chance at ending a four match drought in the Derbi Espanol but will certainly not determine the winner of La Liga, let’s leave that up to the conjecture of the pundits.

I personally loved the special one to come out with different antidote to pick up the three vital points against this so call best team in the world. jose has to divise a new strategy so that we win and win convincingly. i know he is capable of making an upset and he should do it once again. who said records are not there to be broken?. in fact i have already started my prayers in support of this wonderful young team.

The special one really transform real madrid to a world class team/club as for the El clasico it's game between arch rivals a game between 1st and 2nd as a result madrid has an interest to protect that is their lead even a draw is a very good result against barcelona beside it's a game not only barce real but barce and mourinho, and he's capable of upsetting them.Barcelona should be greatful that a mere ex translator/asst.coach is now the best coach in the world.

For Madrid to beat Barca they should play collectively as a team (support in attack and defend as team), pressure well as they have in the past games, avoid letting Barca have too much possession coz they tend to open up spaces at the back, and take their chances coz there wont be so many. However I beleive if the players can follow Mou's Instructions they will come out victorious in el classico or at least get a draw, this is one of the best sides who are on the right path to once again become the Kings of europe

el classico is just becoming the next champions league and world cup finals as the year goes on with this year's inclusion of the mourinioh factor, spicing evrything. I know, madrid is enjoying the best form ever imaginable but, my fear is that of messi who seemed to play even better when ever it's against madrid. How to contain that incredible and invinsible piece of player that should be the worry of mourinho. Don't forget so soon, mourinho in the past had a mixed result againt barca both in chelsea and inter with barca having a win in stamford bridge which mourinho has'nt, will be a thing of concern for mourinho. Don't you ever write off pep guadiola with his never die pattern of play with his parfect side and the two midfield generals(xavi and iniesta)making things uncomfortable for their opponents. Anyway, let's just sitdown, fold our arms and see the eight wonder of the world unveil on monday..

Either team could win this. It'll be a quality contrast between styles. Barca's patient and probing attack vs Madrid's "all gun's blazing" approach. Jose's deeper sitting defence that launches into a counter attack vs Barca's high pressure, high backline defensive system.
People say Jose has some sort of magic spell over Barcelona and cite Inter's knockout of Barca in the CL. They vividly remember the sprinklers being turned on him as he ran out in victory. But I think the legend of Mourinho is more of a myth than a truth. He actually lost that second game. Yes, he won the overall tie, but when you look back at Mourinho vs Barca (Chelsea and Inter ties included), I count the overall record to be as follows:
Barca: 4 wins
Mourinho: 3 wins
Draws: 3
Hardly a magic spell. But if we, the public, are convinced of his invincibility over Barca, then I'm sure his players are beyond hypnotised, and it's with the players, that it really matters.

Personally, the transformation of the "special one" bringing to Real Madrid team is a major transformation to the Team.. Real Madrid can really upset Barcelona. My argument is Real Madrid players are gaining their feet and confident.Pressure is mounting in the Barcelona team.. Which it might not be too good for them.

The 'special one' more than special now in Europe will bring all his wits and supper style in the El clasico to prove to Baca fans that the 'translator' is the now best. Mourinho and his star packed side playing the best football in Europe now are coming to Camp N..., JUST to confirm it. Baca should be greatful to have some one special like Jose coming there with a special team to give them something GOOD in football.

Barcelona are not so special that no one can beat from my view. Hercules beat them at home, so are Madrid comes Monday. I believed in this present Realmadrid team and the quality of the players. I am not worry at all, we madristas will carry the day with more then two goals.

Barca will fall under Ronaldo's feet. Watch out for Mourinho tactical acumen.

The EL CLASICO is a must watch game.Football is a 90 minutes game and could be anyone's day but i really think the BRAIN behind this match for the MADIRDISTAS will make them win the match at the nou camp come this monday and help consolidate their 1st position

what have attracted me most in the real madrid team is the change of attitude in players towards each other (mainly hugian and ronaldo.... they are working great together.... marcelo has a point to prove to messi on this game... and to the pundits

let's not get too carried away my fellow Madrid supporters - the game is no certainty by any means. Mourihno has been competitive/successful against Barca in the past by counter-attacking/parking the bus, I doubt Madrid will try to do that on Monday (and hope not), so it will be a very interesting game to watch. I would like to see Madrid win playing with some style and for Benzema to continue his resurgence.
Posted by JTex13 on 11/28/2010
there is absolutely no way madrid can beat barca at the nou camp. barcelona will tear them apart. they possess a synergy that no other team on earth can contain nor overpower. barcelona is the reason spain won the world cup!
