Embarrassing? Humiliating? Demoralizing? It is tough to find an appropriate word to describe the ‘insert statement of choice here’ that occurred at the Camp Nou on Monday night, but the result was rarely in question.
Barcelona were the superior side, earning the 5-0 drubbing that was handed down to the visiting Madrileños. In a night that was all Azulgrana, the positive takeaways for the visiting side were few and far between.
Not only did were Madrid outshone by a brilliant display of football, but they were completely outclassed as well. Pleasantries were not to be expected but the frustration displayed in the eight cards shown (seven yellow, one red) to the visitors is a testament to the aggravation caused by Barcelona’s superior ball control and overall domination.
It was not beautiful finishing that undid Los Blancos on Monday night, in fact quite the contrary, as most of the final touches involved some fortunate bounces (how the ball bounced up to Xavi for the opener seems to defy physics) and/or auspicious positioning; however, the control, passing and vision displayed by the hosts is some of the best you will ever see. Real Madrid is a phenomenal team; one of the best in Europe right now and Barcelona made them look foolish. Madrid’s midfield probably needs to become a bit more disciplined to keep pace with their Catalan rivals yet this was not the type of display anyone was expecting. It is not a sentiment of pessimism, Barcelona were just that good on the night, reasserting that they still, for the time being, are the best team in Spain.
Ten of the twenty-three players on FIFA’s shortlist of Ballon d’Or candidates took part in the first leg of El Clasico; one would be hard-pressed to amass a greater amount of talent on one pitch. The world’s two best players faced off against each other as Jose Mourinho got his first taste of the Derbi Español (his winless streak, now six matches, continued at the Camp Nou as the Portuguese coach also lost his first match by more than four goals). Pep Guardiola’s side put on a brilliant display of football, making it a night to remember for the close to 100,000 in attendance.
Leo Messi did his best impression of Andres Iniesta; as architect of three goals, the Argentine international showed he can do a lot more than just dribble through defenders (though not a bad talent to have). Towards the end of the first half, Barcelona had controlled the ball for three quarters of the match. Nonsensical statistics in a fixture of this magnitude played between two World-Class clubs. The quality in Barcelona’s midfield made the likes of Mesut Ozil, who has adjusted phenomenally to La Liga, disappear, the Germany star only lasting one half.
The defensive mistakes will be corrected, Mourinho will reinstall confidence in his side, and Madrid will rebound. There is still a lot of football to be played, and Madrid are only two points back. The season will be decided in May, not November, and while it was an embarrassing defeat that is all it was: one loss. But maybe this was also good for Los Blancos. Undefeated and almost unchallenged to this point, Madrid’s confidence was well deserved; however, one wonders if the humbling they received at the hands of their Northern rivals won’t help Mourinho’s side in the long run. A chip on their shoulder, hardly, but playing through a spell of adversity may develop the character needed to conquer Europe once again. Trying to spin a 5-0 hammering in a good light is tricky, but in the end it’s the trophies that matter most in Madrid. This defeat stings but hoisting silverware at the Bernabeu could serve as a very easy remedy to what could prove to be only a minor, early season setback for Los Blancos.

I still believe that Real Madrid is a better team. This will not happen again to them. They will come back stronger and win the second leg in Madrid. A treble is in the cards for them this year as Barcelona can only go down hill from here.

The Match has exposed Jose mourinho's 'evil plan'by breeding players who defy cautions, harm opponent at will,if not how will you describe 7 yellow cards and a red only in a match and the charges he was facing in ajax game for masterminding a deliberate 2 reds aquired making fool of the rule and a video evidence to back up the claim. He seems to go away with these because if he wins, the result is what matters to people and the rest will be story .CONGRATULATIONS Again pep Guardiola, for excaping Mourinho's evil plot that would not only wreck Barca's reputation but a defeat to barca would have left pep a dead rubber, trust jose,he will taunt pep and distract him throughout .But then,i still cannot believe the magnitude of the defeat,5-0,jose confined to bench, could not write the way he does in previous matches,Questions that are begging for answers are; Does this jose have a style of play,or maybe the fear he caused to an opponent makes them fall prey to him? subsequent matches will show.

May be your analysis of the impact is not venhanded. I think that the impact of this loss could be a two edged sword for both Barcelona and Real Madrid. If complaceny becomes the mantle in Barcelona, a few deftaes in the way may just brighten Real's propspects and all this success will be nothing. On the other hand, Barcelona could be more invigorated. If we can do this on Real Madrid, we can do better and more on the rest of the teams. It might be that whoever comes Braca's way will get not less than 5 goals. This could be true. The last time, a less fancied taem got 8 goals. This is followed by 5 goals on a real side in real madrid where Barcelona made a mad (real) rid (riddance) of Real madrid.
The converse is still true. It may be that this result will dissipate Real Madrid forever, the players and Mourinho thinking that they will always be second best to Barcelona and never caring any more. This is obvious for Mourinho hinted that the palyers must see this loss as a gone one.

I watched the match and I must confess that Barcelona proved that they were miles ahead of Real with their superior display.Infact Barcelona turned the match into a training session with the way they taunted Real with the ball. But the bad side of the game was the satanic tackle of Messi by Ramos,I think the Spanish FA must take a look at the video of that game and make sure Ramos gets more than the maximum sentence for a red card.Ramos was malicious and if hes not sanctioned appropriately, others are watching and we the sporting world would be the loser when the best players are kicked out of the game

I am a Barca fan and knew Barca was going to win the classico but I was frankly as surprised as the whole world by the display Barca put on on monday...Real madrid did not have a bad day...they were rendered hopeless and helpless for there were no answers, at least no human answers, to Barca's excellence. Wouaw...this is football at its best and I am just glad the whole world was watching...sheer brillance that was. And a couple of debate were settled as well:
1. Messi is better Ronaldo...he is even alone in his class.
2. Mourinho isn't that special after all.
3. Guadiola is the best coach on the planet.
4. beautiful flowing football can overcome negative defensive football.
5. Barca has the 3 best players in the world: Messi, Xavi and Iniesta.
6. Barca has the best central defense pairing in the world: Puyol and Pique
7. Barca has the best defensive midfielder in the world: Sergi Busquest.
8. Barca has the best central forward in the world: David Villa

I guess the writer of the above article is one of those people who are drunk on this believe that Mourinho is this one guy that is better than anybody else.Anyway Pep has thought him a lesson in the art of football.I have always maintained that Mourinho has always been lucky. He is just an opportunist, who only go to clubs with resources to buy him already made players and a team that is at the point of jellying. However,I predicted it that Spain and particularly Barcelona will expose him for what he is.Let those who are dreaming about Real bouncing back and picking titles remember that the team of the moment-Barca will not be waiting for them.Barca dealt with Real last two seasons and carried the league in Spain, the presence of Mourinho in Real this season.will not change it.The hammering with Mourinho in charge this time will make the victory dance more sweet.

it was a convicing win for Barca, i do not know the reasons you can hide this defeat. The Special One got something special that he wont forget quickly in his managerial tenure. This was very embrassing for the fans, players and Mr Perez too.

Didn't anyone see or feel the crowd? The Real Madrid players were scared of the crowd. All the players were thinking more about their safety than the game.
It was a big psychological shock, and on top of it you're facing the best team in the league. The only way it is fair, is when they play on neutral ground.
To me it was a bad lose, but really unrealistic. Hercules has beaten Barca, but Real has beaten Hercules. Does that mean real madrid is better? no, someday is your day and someday it isn't. And everybody seems to forgot that real madrid's new squad is fairly young compared to a experienced barca. In situation of extreme famine, only the experienced knows how to keep a cool head. Psychology is 70% of a match, the rest is skill.

u have to give mourinho more time to set his team right.... he hasnt even had 1 season with his team. also messi looks like the best because he is playing with xavi and inesta. FOR EXAMPLE why didnt he play good on argentina in the world cup. he is good but not as good as ronlado.

What happened at the Nou Camp wasnt just a fluke, but a result of many years of years of careful preparation in nurturing players through a system that has been proved right time and time again.Thankfully for soccer purists,it shows that you cant buy trophies.Madrid have a long way to catch up,and defensive, negative football will never take the place of the poetry displayed by Messi and Co.

Well to be realistic, Mourinho lost the plot and the game, don't know whether he will be able to rescue his cv from being tarnished, because it will take time to have the likes of hierro, dalgado, and carlos, trouble is we don't know whether Mourinho will get the time to re-build the team, but this loss is an indication that the madrid engine is still very rusty, and the question remains will the board give him more time unlike pellegrin? or somebody will request for his head? come April 17 we will know the future of the special one, but regarding the game, they were outclassed by the world champions, minus ramos and casillas

splendid display of football from barcelona, yes.but barcelona better than RM, NO.What we saw on monday night was the result of the long awaiting scores to be settled by barca's players and their manager against mourinho and not madrid.though they succeeded that night, that will be their best performance this season.barca is going to be beaten, battered and humiliated this season by even the most lowly rated clubs. As for madrid, we still believe in Jose. He will escavate his usual magic and shock the world this season in Spain.

Attention all Champions League teams who will go on to play in the last 16:
How to beat Real Madrid
(based on a formula developed by Guardiola)
eliminate Xabi Alonso from the midfield
that's it, easy
I hope Olympique Lyonnais get a hold of this!

look people it was kinda obvious mourinho was never gonna pick up a result in the nou camp. The madrid team was never gonna compete in the middle of the park with the likes of ozil,di maria, benzema and the peacock with the 7.... Its a question of waiting for the transfer market and getting folks who would play for the team as a unit with huge defensive capabilities;ergo that will lead to him being kicked out pronto... my goodness barca just redefined the love that we ought to have for football
 |
Posted by Anonymous on 12/01/2010
barca is simply the best team has the best defenders ,midfielders, strikers, and most of all as a unit their definetly the best and yes messi, xavi and inesta are the three best players in the world

Nelson, I didn't think anyone would have the cajones to actually say, let alone truly believe, that Real Madrid is still a better team than Barcelona after this complete destruction. I just want you realize what an a$$ you are making of yourself with comments like that.

let me tel u guys the scoreline of the EL CLASICO match at Bernabeu later in 2011.Real Madrid 0-2 Barcelona..Madrid and their fans... bring Jose or Zidane or anyone who u think can get Madrid to top but u cannot defeat BARCELONA now..forget about winning UCL or La Liga.5-0 is not a luck or fluke scoreline..its a result between superiority and a bunch of bullhogs(Ronaldo and the company).Barcelona is the best...and so is Messi.

Onye you are not clever if you write such garbage about Jose. You obviously don't watch him or his teams. He is a winner and better than Pep who has a great team that even you could coach. Watch and wait how Jose bounces back and gets his team in shape over a few years like he did with Porto, Chelsea and Inter. Barcelona were magnificent and on that display would have beaten any side including National teams so well done but lets see at the end of the season

As a lover of the game and a Madrid fan to the core, I think Barca had the best game in their history on Monday, & frankly I don't see that happening in the nearest decades (I surely hope so)! Congrats. Enjoy the victory while you can.
Madrid will definitely bounce back coz they'd've learnt more from the match than anyone would ever think. What we saw on Mon was a team that has jelled (over 2-3 yrs) playing against one under construction. Madrid, more than anything, needs continuity;
1. Let the players continue as a unit
2. Identify & continue their own style of play (without compromise)
3. Allow JM continue with his work;
then let's see what next season's clissico'd be like (or in fact, that of April '11)
Once again, kudos to Barca
As for Madrid, let the construction continue

i think Real Madrid is 1 of the teams 2 watch this season, they are the best but its just that Barca were better on Monday. Jose is better than Pep because he establishes a team almost from scratch, yet Pep found an already established team by Frank and the signings he made : Ibra n Henry, were a big flop. Real wiil bounce back thy hav learned from their mistakes and hav gud coach who has a vision for success. Messi he is the best in La Liga and Ronaldo he is best in England and La Liga the captain of his national team.

5-0 does not make Barca the best team in the world. If you ask me,what is the best team in the world? I'd answer Hercules.Because they were the only team to blow Barca to the ground.Although, their performance against Real Madrid was great but that is only one side of the coin.Let's wait to see the outcome of the other side. Hoping that everything will work just fine for the Los Blancos in the comming games.Whether loose or win; this year is Real Madrid's year of success in spain and Europe as a whole.

Barcelona have played a fantastic and wonderful football monday night. They have showed their superiority over Real Madrid. As for Jose Morinho, he has never won bercelona at Nou Camp, and he will never win forever. Messi has also showed his superiority over C. Ronaldo. Messi is truely the best player on the planet along with the Xavi and Iniesta.

Amazing that some people still think that RM are a better side. When have RM ever played to such a level at any time since the 1960s? Even in 1998-2002 when they repeatedly won the Champions League, RM was not as good as Guardiola's team. You don't have to count up trohpys to know that, you just have to watch a few games.
You Madridistas are simply jealous that Barca are better than you. That is natural - but you should admit it. Their superiority won't last forever, but while it does, you should have the guts to recognize it.

to those who humiliate madrid, first look at barcelona, they are already a finished product, pep only inherit the good player.
what if you put pep on JM side? what will be his outcome? maybe worst than a 5-0 defeat? and to those who says that JM only work for a team who has money, idoubt it, he love challenges, look porto, look chelsea? they haven't win a silverware for almost 50 years, and look inter who is their superstar when jose comes? nothing it's the discipline and motivation of the manager that teaches the player to be good enough
let's see on may who will be the champion? if you say that barcelona is the best, i dont agree because they were beaten by hercules, hercules is the best

Barcelona is simply the best in the world. They proved that monday and will continue to prove that. And for all the messi haters that say y ddnt he do good in the world cup the answer is he did... he was behind all the build up to almost every goal argentina made. even with the horrible defeat to germany he still was running through their defense he was just unlucky... messi is the best in the world and ronaldo has nuttin on him

Barca are the finished article. They simply tweak, here and there every transfer season and can afford to make calculated gambles i.e. Zlatan, or Villa. The latter is paying off. Madrid has yet to settle into a rhythm of any kind, although before last monday, the wins were coming but you can still sense an over-reliance on CR7. I hate saying this, as he seems like such a pr*ck, but CR7 seems to be the only guy who wants to consistently lay it on the line. Barca's players 'feel' the game, they feel what it means to play for the crest, they all looked like they shared the same brain that night. I hope RM reaches those levels, but I'm afraid our supporters, our structure and our history will weigh too heavily on the Mourinho's decisions and he will have to compromise aesthetic for wins.I recognize Barca's greatness, but let's attribute it to staying the course, not some ingrained superiority gained from drinking the water in Catalyunia.
Hala Madrid!

the only remmedy for real madrid is to sign messi, xavi, iniesta and guardiola so they can bit BARCELONA

Madrid got destroyed by Barca. No doubt about it. But you cant talk about coach. Mou has already defeated knock barca out of champs twice. Something Pep hasnt done. Yes Barca out played Real. But dont count victory yet. At the end of the year see you will see who will be crowned champion. Its not only about Barca and Real. Even though i am a Real fan. Many new teams are rising.
This is all you need to know.
Messi is fast and has ball control. note: always goes left.
Ronaldo is fast and has ball control. note: uses skill all the time.

the game against barca showed that real need two great central defenders
it shows that real need kaka more than ever, before the game almost everyone thought kaka is not needed.
it shows that real players are afraid of barca they are 2 ways 2 beat barca either 2 attack them and defend and hit them on the counter. real cant defend but if they go at them they may win.

so what if they lost to hercules. the game against hercules was right after intewrnational duty wtf do u expect. madrid lost to a second division team last year in the copa del rey, does anyone remmebern that? does anyone remember the rcent game vs real murcia in which they ALSO tied??with ronaldo on the [pitch whilst barcaplayed their second division opponents with their youth squad?if ronaldos somuch better than messi then how come hes never been able to lead his team to a victory vs barcelona in every single encpounter hes had so far. if he was better hed obviously outshine and lead his team to a victory versus barcelona but he has yet to do that. he scores alotm of dead balls and set pieces ands penalties.leading up to the clasico messi had 13 goals in 10 games with more assists than ronaldo. ronaldo had14 goals in 12 games meaning he had 2 xtra games and 4 of those goals being penalites...cr7 is not even c;lose mto being on messis level

it's a joy wachting barcelona just as it was a joy watching madrid under del bosque. football is a game and at this moment barcelona is playing it like the brazil squad from 1982. the only difference being that barcelona can deliver trophies. besides good football barcelona also displays class, there is no arrogance. the players and the coach are humble. this also reminds me of del bosque. Mourinho n the other hand is the opposite. he needs to create an atmosphere of hostillity. he seems to forget that football is a game. his character realy show in defeat.
